Billions and billions would agree.

How would you do it, then?

Penis dog is excited.

//Woola was pretty bad ass

Just Woola?

Nah, the whole movie was. The farking flyers were great. I was disappointed that there were no banths. Overall, the movies was very well done, though I do think the farked the "mossy ground" at the beginning. They used more like spanish moss, but I think ERB meant more like a green forest moss carpet.

It was more of a Dejah Thoris poke. But obviously I liked the whole movie too.

Hoping for seven minutes of terror to be followed by a few hours of nerdgasms at NASA on this landing attempt.

Wonder what sound stage they've rigged all this up on.

OK, my potato skins reached a peak heating of 374F before toaster oven cutoff....

Fun thing about the "Eyes on the Solar System" simulation is that from the point of view of the probe the Sun is in Canis Major/Puppis.

Is it spread yet?

Gwendolyn: GAH the video keeps pixelating. >.

My problem is the sound. One second it's whisper quiet; the next second, it's louder than subby's mom having sex.

Twitter update:

I'm glad it's you on the line, @CanberraDSN. Thanks for being my ears on the Earth tonight #MSL

Thoughts:

Should the Rover be texting and driving? Will tonight be the ultimate in PSAs?

Yes, because as we all know, there exist very simple ways to slow down something from 13000 mph to 0 within 7 minutes of thin atmosphere while fighting the force of gravity. Super simple.

How could you make it more complicated and prone to failure, you mean?
Ask NASA.

On a sound stage outside of Vegas, just like the moon missions, much easier.

I put it in firefox instead of chrome and I'm getting the sound thing now too instead of pixels.

I'm not getting any video on any of these camera feeds. They could be packet blocking here at work. Frustrating.

Quit showing the nerds and show the computer simulation! Why did you make it if you aren't going to show it?

Weirdly, the more they show him, the more the mohawk grows on me.

Powering off my stream. Now powering on TV. Tuning...Tuning....Tuned to NASA TV.

Roger on landing coverage.

We are a go for excitement.

I'm suck a spoiler whore. As soon as I saw you could speed up the time on the 'Eyes on the Solar System' thing I fast forwarded and landed the thing.

Ha! I thought about that too. I was thinking how much they look like a bunch of slouches compared to the guy in the vest.

2012-08-06 12:55:03 AM
I wouldn't let the guy with the mohawk valet park my car, and they're letting him help land a Mars rover?

2012-08-06 12:55:05 AM
It's crazy, in the simulation you can actually see Mars grow in real-time.

2012-08-06 12:55:16 AM
OH NOES!

Yes, because as we all know, there exist very simple ways to slow down something from 13000 mph to 0 within 7 minutes of thin atmosphere while fighting the force of gravity. Super simple.

Viking Lander with wheels instead of landing pads, jettison landing engines and tanks after landing and drive off. Super simple.

Most of NASA sucks and is retarded,

But the Mars guys are balls out the baddest biatches in the unisphere.

Watching these folks makes me wish I was ambitious and good at math. What a cool job.

I had that same feeling...Like watching for Santa's sleigh on the weather radar as a kid.

Shadow Blasko: amusingly enough, I am sitting here around a campfire outside of cleveland, with a bunch of friends from the renaissance faire, watching nasa tv on laptop and phones. I've managed to get 10 of them excited enough to watch.

There was a Renaissance Faire in San Jose this weekend as well, in Guadalupe River Park. I wonder how many people who went to that are also following this live.

Amazingly, the San Jose Tech Museum (which is only a few blocks from Guadalupe River Park) has absolutely no mention of Curiosity on their home page, let alone any sort of related activity.

/watching from home

OK, watching it now. Our department is holding a viewing party, mostly because one of our faculty is on the science mission team.

Yay!
