Mawson of the Antarctic: I'm actually a little worked up over here-it's amazing that something is happening above the surface of Mars while I'm here sitting in my chair. Think of it like this: we were human/humanish for about 2million years, then 6000 years ago we've got recorded history, 2000 years ago Roman Empire, 500 years ago Renaissance, 200 years ago Industrial Revolution, Man on the Moon less than 50, everyone having a powerful computer in their pocket in the last 5.

Man, it's astounding.

/Science!

Then there are these people, a credit to humanity to be sure.

Marshall Banana: I remember the days of watching things like this on crappy streaming 90's codecs. I'm blown away at how nice NASA TV is looking right now.

Child, I remember the days of watching things like this when fiddling with the hunk of aluminum foil on one of the rabbit ears made all the difference.

/will nevar forget Apollo 11.

Mr. Potatoass: I don't watch much TV. Try to save a buck where I can.
Got f*cking pissed when I found out I can't get NASA TV on DirecTV now, without paying for HD.

/Thanks for the link(s), all.

Yup, this finally got me to dump DTV. Can't get FIOS yet, but Cablevision will do.

How do I get paid to be a social media manager? To think I've been doing this shiat for free for years...

Probably the same way you get a job as J-Lo's nipple tweaker.

Haha, thought the same thing.

I've give NASA credit for one other thing....they seem to have really gotten on board with the whole self-promotion thing. Between the 'news anchor chick' walking everyone through, all the graphics, the 7 minute of terror video that was setting view records. I credit them for having the balls to direct so much attention at this mission with all the landing risks. High risk, high reward all around.

Relatively Obscure: SpikeStrip: it's gonna land safely. nasa is just trying to drum up the interest with this whole "7 minutes of TERROR!" thing.

I don't think anyone assumes they are just making a wild guess with their landing. Of course they're more than a little confident that it will work fine.

SpikeStrip: what could possibleye go wrong?

I am now blaming any failure on you personally.

LOL, a Java applet? What is this, the 90's?

Everything that applet does can be done in HTML and without opening the security hole called Java.

Whatever. It's pretty cool.

don't joke, we all wish we could have those mics. No matter who it is, once your voice goes through that thing you sound all calm, cool, professional and badass. Seriously, put nasa commentary up next to radio chatter from fighter pilots.... hardly any difference.

Is anyone else nervous about how that velocity keeps slowly ticking up on the simulation or is it just me? I mean, they're supposed to slow this thing down.

I've been watching these things ever since Voyager II sent back pictures of Neptune (went to the local planetarium to see them come in as a kid). These are always exciting, manned or not.

This is so farking cool. I'm sitting here in front of my computer watching NASA TV in HD, the computer simulation on the secondary monitor, drinking a beer and listening to NASA chatter while a car-sized lander going almost ten thousand miles an hour is heading toward Mars like a bullet.

When the fark did the future happen?

Seriously, that man is a Rocket Scientist... And he looks like he's totally waiting for a record label for his band, man. Now that's not a slight against the man, just kinda find the whole generational shift from the original Apollo missions is quite distinct. And that's cool.
