HaywoodJablonski: Why not haul ass for 3 full laps?

Because no one can haul ass for that long without slowing down. You will see some riders sprint earlier, but generally anything more than a lap and a quarter of sprinting doesn't turn out well.

HaywoodJablonski: Why not haul ass for 3 full laps?

Because you would be tired and relatively slow by the end, and the person sitting behind you could virtually be a scrub and still beat you - in track cycling 80%+ of the effort is moving the air in front of you, and you save about 30% of the effort by sitting in someones slipstream, so by the end it would be an easy win for the other racer even if they are massively inferior in terms of top speed or endurance.

F@ck aerodynamic advantage in a 10-second race. Jeez

I'd love to find out what gears they have on the bikes. Interesting to see what gear ratios they're pushing.

75+Kg women's weightlifting over. China's Lulu Zhou (who seems to be quite a character, her warm-up yell would make a good meme) wins, Russian second, Armenian 3rd.

They've either had or are having a rather lengthy officials review of that last race.

Would like to know what she yelled. Unless it was just the basic yell. NBC should have cut to that instead of the snore fest basketball game.

Anybody know what time and what channel the mens 100m will be shown live? I'm sure NBC is going to try hiding it from us so they can show it in prime time.

WhyteRaven74: Siamese Bream: Team GB has secretly replaced their bicycles with Kawasakis. Let's see if anyone notices.

heh I'm sure some of the competitors are wondering just what the hell is going on.

Well one of the French cycling organisation definitely thinks something is amis.

Are 'magic wheels' the secret to GB cycling dominance?

devioustrevor: Interesting, I wonder if the papers in London tomorrow refer to Andy Murray as British or Scottish?

Probably neither. Though they may show him with the Union Flag. All today's papers just had Jessica Ennis taking up nearly the whole front page, with little text. Yeah. Even cynical people in the UK are a bit carried away with it all.

Equestrian jumping. French horseman broke a rein. Whoever was in charge of checking the tack will get their ass kicked.

Burchill: Well one of the French cycling organisation definitely thinks something is amis.

heh what I have noticed is that the British riders are lot steadier, they don't bob side to side when they're really pounding the pedals like others do and they also hold their lines through turns better, they don't weave at all. May not seem like much, but every little side to side motion of the bike, every little deviation from a line in a turn is some time lost.

Found it on their online coverage. The evening session of track and field starts at 1:47pm eastern and includes the 100m finals.

Nice.

I always worry that one of those fiberglass(?) poles is going to snap in half in the middle of the vault, then the vaulter drops straight down, impaling himself on the sharded half-pole. Shudder.

Which makes me look up on youtube, and found these. Nothing too bad. Link

Still, pole vault has always been one of my favorite events because they get so much air. Bummed I haven't seen any this year.

This thing the Olympics track events are doing where the athletes' last names are on the front of their jerseys. Could we do that a little more often after the Olympics are over and we're back to normal sports service? I rather enjoy that little innovation.

I'm appalled at the blatant disregard for tradition.

It was all dudes back then too.

It would probably still get me to tune in. I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much though.

The break pretty regularly, however they only break when they're being bent or at maximum bend, at which point the vaulter usually just goes flying into the pit.

By the way, I'm not onto live service yet; my first order of business has been to try and avoid being instantly spoiled long enough to load the women's marathon. I'm about 18, 19 miles in, where you're down to three East Africans and a Russian.

They actually showed that live on east coast NBC.

I was in the military with a guy who had that happen to him back in college. The pole broke and ripped through his arm from just below his elbow to his shoulder. He had the biggest scar I've ever seen.

An alien warship takes away the Russian and East Africans and a lady from Omricon Persei 8 runs the entire 26 miles faster than the rest run the last 7..
