"I posted on Facebook that donating money to gay rights causes did a heck of a lot more good than depriving Christian groups of $0.0001 by boycotting Chick-fil-A," Frank tells The Huffington Post. "A friend joked 'Chicken offsets' in response, the domain name was open, and someone else would've come up with the idea if I didn't execute."

It's a great idea. You get to eat the chicken with a clear conscience.

I don't really get why someone would give that guy $ (where only 80% after expenses goes to LGTB groups), rather than just donate the $ to those groups directly.

siyuntz: I don't really get why someone would give that guy $ (where only 80% after expenses goes to LGTB groups), rather than just donate the $ to those groups directly.

Because people are stupid, it's a genius idea though, heck if he's really smart he will donate to a group he creates that takes another 20% off the top.

Not quite as lucrative as founding a religion ala Scientology, but pretty freaking smooth

/it wont work for long, media hype will die off, but perfect timing

I like the implication that it doesn't matter what you donate to, as long as it goes to "the gays".

Donating to an anti-suicide group and a thinktank doesn't cancel out money given to lobbying groups.

2012-08-05 03:50:30 AM
It's like a more legitimate form of carbon credits.

2012-08-05 05:22:08 AM
Money that you spend at chick-fil-a goes to groups like the family research council, groups which have lobbied to criminalize homosexuality and that try to "cure" gay kids of their sexual orientation.

If you find that kind of thing abhorrent, don't give them your money. This is America. There is plenty of crappy, non-evil fast food chicken out there.

Because then he wouldn't be able to pocket 20%.

If ChickFilA is so good, how come they don't show their face in California?

Kevin72: If ChickFilA is so good, how come they don't show their face in California?

Because of all the gay in Cali.

There's at least 3 of them in the Sacramento area

how well is that working out for them?

You can print out the receipt and demonstrate to your friends that the money you gave for LGBT youth more than compensates for the profits you put in Chick-fil-A's coffers.

If anyone ever feels the need to do that, I hope they punch themselves in the face until that feeling goes away.

2012-08-05 08:48:58 AM
What's the problem? Hillbilly Redneck Southerners have their cute little anti gay chicken shop, and everyone else picks some other chicken shop. Easy.

Based on the pictures I saw of the Southern Chicken Support Brigade, CFA is not really worries about the Northeast or Southeast.

that's actually pretty stupid.

You guys read right through the actual statement: "We promise to send a minimum of 80% of the proceeds after expenses to ..."

It could be just unfortunate wording. Or his org could include expenses like labor, office space etc to the tune of .50 on every dollar and then give .40 to the LGBT orgs.

/wife works finance in the non-profit world
//she gets itchy when seeing wording like that from NP start-ups

siyuntz: I don't really get why someone would give that guy $ (where only 80% after expenses goes to LGTB groups), rather than just donate the $ to those groups directly.

This is the reason, the real "win-win":

You can print out the receipt and demonstrate to your friends that the money you gave for LGBT youth more than compensates for the profits you put in Chick-fil-A's coffers.

By making giving into a joke, he provides a way for people to show off their social consciousness to their friends without looking like the self-righteous slacktivist assholes that they are. He's found a way of profiting from the desire to look like a good person, but to do so without looking like one wants to look like a good person.

2012-08-05 08:56:03 AM
It seems like the money should be given to a pro gay marriage lobby group instead of groups that indirectly support that cause. I'm all for gay kids not killing themselves, but It Gets Better would only seem to be asking for tolerance from other people, if it asks other people for anything at all. Their focus is not full legal equality (as far as I know?). Chick Fil A funds powerful lobbying groups that directly go against rights for gay people. It's not like Chick Fil A is just donating to, I don't know, a Christian missionary organization that supports ending poverty (something that benefits everyone, regardless).

Most people, even people who don't want gay people to be able to marry, support kids not killing themselves. I won't accuse the credits guy of shameless opportunism because it's a clever idea and it does at least do some good, but I also won't pretend that this "offsets" the damaging impact that Chick Fil A's political contributions have. They're simply not equivalent organizations.

That's kinda like how Stephen Colbert shows a pic of him next to a black person to prove he's got black friends, except it's for chicken sandwiches... "See, I support you guys, I'm not a homophobe, just look at this offset!"

Your chicken dollars are still funding hate groups. Hard to offset that.

siyuntz: I don't really get why someone would give that guy $ (where only 80% after expenses goes to LGTB groups), rather than just donate the $ to those groups directly.

Because you get a certificate to prove that you offset the C-F-A purchase. The implication being that your friends think you're a liar and won't believe you if you just say that you donated.

2012-08-05 08:58:45 AM
There is no "debate". A verrry few internet trolls and grandstanding politicians (both with chips on their shoulders) are trying, and FAILING to make a huff. Fark them both. Your pathetic little protest (aka attention whoring) flopped bigger than "Water world")

So, basically, it's the status quo.

So, for $2.85 I can have a chicken sandwich, but for $3.85, I get a chicken sandwich with no guilt?
www.ibridgeplayer.com

Actually, I prefer mine with a bit of ranch dressing. And that extra dollar will get me the waffle fries. I'll deal with the guilt.

seems like alot of trouble ehen you could just go eat something else or just eat at Chick Fil a and nit give a shiat how they feel about gays

2012-08-05 09:00:26 AM
So people are free to judge you based on where you eat now? I never thought I was a bad person for liking their nuggets until recently

This. It's a long way (considering the American attention span) to November and the brouhaha will have been long forgotten. Don't like their policy? Don't eat there. Insist on eating there? Then shut up and live with your guilt (hire a Jewish mother if need be). Or buy organic or humanely-slaughtered chicken or buy carbon offsets. Just do it quietly.

2012-08-05 09:03:06 AM
American consumers have zero self control. They'll make any rationalization and continue to contribute to shiatty service, products, ideas, or way of life just so they don't have to exercise impulse control.

2012-08-05 09:03:14 AM
I'm sure every time I buy gas I am funding the middle east which does not seem to like teh gays either, yet I don't see everyone biatching and banning gas.

2012-08-05 09:04:14 AM
I eat at Chick Fil A to alleviate the guilt I get from giving that farktard Jeff Bezos my hard earned cash. Christian groups should boycott Amazon as well as support Chick Fil A and make an object lesson out of Amazon. Let them sell to GLAAD and NAMBLA and see how Amazon stock does then.

Dear God. What a load of horseshat. This has seriously went to levels of stupid reserved for comedy only.

Done.

eating tasty young chicken is how a lot of guys went gay to begin with, Chick Fil A.

You mean like the one on Sports Arena Boulevard here in San Diego?Or the one in the Clairemont area of San Diego? Or the one in Poway?

I realize it's tough to track these kinds of obscure facts down, requiring at least 15 seconds worth of Google time.

I'll top his offer. With me you'll get TWICE the offsets per dollar and I promise to give 90% of the proceeds to somebody or other.

No checks please. MC / Visas and PayPal only
