The Dream Cruise isn't until the following Saturday. The cruising starts building up during the week but there won't be much to see on Monday night. Official events don't begin until Thursday.

Royal Oak? Michigan farkers are wimps. Why not have the party in Detroit?

Heh... if it wasn't currently raining like a whore's birthday, there'd be people in lawn chairs out there right now.

There are a lot of cruising spots in SE Michigan on a Saturday night. Not really relevant to my point though.

I read your post as "Consider this: The Dream Cruise isn't until the following Saturday. The cruising starts building up during the week but there won't be much to see on Monday night. Official events don't begin until Thursday.". Thank you for having a useful handle.

Got in before me didn't you!

Yes, the official Dream Cruise is Saturday, just like Mardi Gras is officially on Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, but stuff happens the week leading up to the big day. The prior Monday is the least crowded of the pre-Cruise days. Come for the movie, stay for the dream cruise kinda implies that once you are in town, hang out for a while and see what rolls up. Gotta explain everything, it seems.

/couldn't rent the theatre on a weekend
//wouldn't have enough space @ Mr B's any other day but Monday

If you go to the right area, the scene downtown is pretty good. The trick is not wandering too far in the wrong direction...which is pretty much every direction.

Because the person organizing it wants to show a movie at the Main and the DIA and Redford aren't really the best for that sort of thing?

/still (sigh) about it being on a Monday
//I could organize something in Detroit proper
///but I'm busy or lazy or whatever
////have fun ya'll

Because I want people to show up, not just talk about showing up.
(Our fair leaders in the City of Detroit aren't doing a good job of managing city finances, which tends to lead to a breakdown in city services and the like). But hey, just for you, we can have a party in my backyard, and watch the decay as it happens.

Royal Oak was chosen partly because the film production company recently previewed another movie at the same theater, and all went well. There were too many costs and restrictions at the few Detroit theaters available for a movie premiere. We also wanted someplace that had a bar close by. There were plenty of places in Royal Oak within walking distance of the theater. We were able to cut a deal at Mr. B's to get a free buffet line, so long as drinks were pay as you go.

/just joking about the pre-party
//started a new job, so won't have time for anything extra curricular

There are places in Detroit reversing the decay despite all of the stupid hurdles in their way, you know...

/and more power to those people
//good luck with the showing, the trailer looked like a labor of love

Ah, yes, my good friend John George, from Blight Busters. They had a citywide neighborhood cleanup going on today. I was selling ice cream on the east side, battery died on the bike, and was in the process of pushing my bike home, when a gentleman gave me a jump start. Would have been a long push home (2 miles) in this heat.

I was going to help Mr. George a bit, but someone abandoned a dog in my backyard. Had to spend the better part of this morning looking for a no-kill shelter to take it in. If I could have, I would have adopted it, but finances are precarious at the moment.

/at least this one was left alive
//the previous dog, not so much

Redford Theater was my first choice. Unfortunately, as a non-profit, they have to do everything by committee. The price was really high, and they wanted me to pay for extras like security guards and liability insurance, which I feel should have been included in the base price. I offered to them the idea to show the movie and split the proceeds 50/50 with Blight Busters, but the man I spoke to said my proposal would have to go before the entire board, which meets only once a month. This was after 6 months of trying to get someone to return phone calls. (I had to wait outside for 4 hours to talk to them at the end of one of their monthly meetings). This was only two months ago, and would leave me no time for promoting the movie.

The DIA wasn't really contacted, since they book all their shows in advance for about a year. I didn't really bother with them. Burton Theater was a possibility, but I didn't think they ran things too well. I talked to the Phoenix theater on 8 Mile (where Eminem premiered his movie of the same name), but they recently switched to digital cameras, which are owned by the studios. I would have to get permission from Hollywood to show my movie. Didn't bother with the hassle.

By contrast, I was able to take care of the Main Art in Royal Oak in a day or two.

/yes, they make the independent guys pay for the theater
//when a major studio shows a film, the theater pays them for the right to show it

I'll be there from 9 pm to midnight. Can't close the bar since I got a new job.
