thisispete: Sargun: I love Churchill because he's an amazing personality during an amazing time in history. Many of his ideals were deplorable (eugenics, etc), but the person was such a farking awesome dude.

With so many Brits, French, Aussies and Kiwis dead on the shores of Gallipoli, which was Churchill's clusterfark, his legacy would have been completely tainted if it wasn't for WW2. His leadership after the fall of France redeemed him.

Gallipoli almost worked. It was *this* close. It failed because of poor tactical leadership by the local commanders. However, it was very risky, and they all knew it. So Churchill doesn't escape responsibility. But it was a damn close thing, it almost worked. And if it had, Turkey would have been knocked out of the war, which would have carried an enormous impact. It might have led to a much earlier Allied victory. And that might have meant avoiding Versailles, and therefore Hitler.

All big question marks, of course. And Churchill doesn't escape responsibility. But it was a damn near thing.

It was the same thing with D-Day. If the weather had been a little bit worse, keeping the Mustangs out of the air for the first 48 hours; if the Germans had put another panzer division closer to Normandy; if Hitler's aides hadn't been afraid to wake him up; the whole thing might have failed. Dieppe but on a much larger scale. That would have meant extending the war at least another year, and it would have been the Russians who finished it in Europe.

In that case, history would be saying, "Normandy was Marshall's and Eisenhower's clusterfark, they should have listened to Churchill and invaded Greece and the Balkans."

Fart_Machine: Anyone really believe Romney gives a shait about Churchill?

Romney gives a shiat about anything that gives him a chance to talk about something other than his personal finances.

Let's watch losers who have never accomplished anything rewrite history so they can feel superior to people that have accomplish much.

Sabyen91: What the hell does he want with two identical busts?

To use them for political outrage much like the supposed Ground Zero mosque that wasn't a mosque and wasn't at ground zero?

Why is this one the Politics Tab?

With Mitt Romney promising to ask for the Churchill bust to be returned to the Oval Office, from where it was unceremoniously expelled by President Obama in his first week in office

Aw fark. Not this shiat again.

He couldn't plan military operation for sh*t, so that should definitely endear him to Republicans.
