This bastard needs to be lynched.

I can't say i feel sorry for the guy, after what he did to all of those innocent people, but it is pretty sad what mental illness can do to a person. He is obviously mentally ill. I am not saying he shoukd not be held responsible. But, it is a tragedy from both sides.

that dude is one of the most genuinely batshiat crazy looking people I've had the displeasure of having to look at.

of course, I bet farkers could find some more, but when I saw that mugshot I was sad for anyone who came into contact with him. it must have made you want to take off your skin and throw it in the washing machine on extra hot.

Agreed. There are no winners here. Clearly, he can't walk away from this without consequences, but keeping him on a locked mental ward would be a much more decent thing to do than throwing him in prison.

This stuff always makes me so angry about the state of mental health care in this country.

I like it. They say we shouldn't justify the historical significance of their fame. We all know John Wilkes Booth, and other killers. But if we had called him something insulting and humorous he would fade to 'some nutjob' and historians would be the only ones to know him off-hand.

No. Clown or not, he was a serial killer, not a spree killer. There's a difference.

The rules have been clearly defined here as spree killers only. I'm game.

I'm with you there. What the guy did was horrible, but he is clearly sick, and needs help. It be better for him to be locked up for life in a mental institution than, suffer worse in a prison. I hate how society views people who are born with mental illness like its their fault, and just shove them off to the side. Then when they do something bad, they throw the book at them, and make it worse. If some people honestly got the help they need early, they might not go crazy, and do something bad like a mass shooting.

I remember a few years back this guy was going to be released from a mental institution after being there for about 25 years. He killed his sister, and was sent there. The place said he is will enough to function in society, but the neighborhood that had a halfway house for him, freaked out on his release. They made a petition for the cit counsel to make him not live their. Only one person voted against it, and that is a person who works is a social worker / counselor. Needless to say he couldn't be release until they found an area they would let him live. How can a person try to benefit himself, and society if no one allows him or supports him, especially if they need real help?

Well you just hit the nail on the head. It's the social stigma surrounding mental illness that prevents people from seeking help until things get out of hand. It'd almost be funny if it weren't for the fact that people suffer because of near-universal stupidity about the issue. Hell, we took some of our clients to burger king a few weeks ago and while they were waiting in line, several of them were making small talk with this nicely dressed man in a suit waiting in line near them. The subject came up of a recent scuffle (drug-related) in the area and the subsequent police involvement. His response? "I know, right? It's terrible what those mentally ill people do!" My clients' response? "... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Really, why don't you tell us more... *all roll eyes*"

MAKE CRAZY PEOPLE ILLEGAL

2012-08-05 07:57:42 AM
Obama could totally turn the gun thing around to make it a winning issue, *and* do some good. Frame it as not about guns, but a mental health issue. When you frame it as a mental health issue, it takes the focus off the guns (which should satisfy the NRA, but won't) and focus on fixing all the broken people in the country. Its a win-win! Mentally ill people get help and become productive members of society, gun nuts get to keep their guns, and fewer mass shootings by genuinely crazy folks (because there are fewer of them... they can actually be healed if the resources are focused on it)

There is something pretty distasteful about this.

If he was not guilty by virtue of insanity (or however you put it over there) at the time of the crime it seems perverse to treat him for mental illness and then hold him retrospectively responsible for his actions.

Should he get off if he makes a complete recovery? Yes he should. That's a bummer for his victims and their relatives, but locking someone up for life, or killing him, for something he did while out of control is Just Not Civilised.

Of course it should go without saying that it would take a long stay in hospital and some very impressive medical testimony to convince me that he was actually cured.

Yes, something distasteful. The guy killed those people when he was completely nuts, now our job is to get him sane enough to realize what he's done, so that he can feel guilty about, and answer for, something that he did when he wasn't in his right mind?
