I nearly went apeshiat when NBC broke away from the 800-m swimming to promote their shows and broadcast political ads; and I'm not even an avid fan. Fark you, NBC.

Well, the event was longer than six minutes, so they CAN'T show you the whole thing. Look! A goldfish!

really, they cut away at like 2:30 and returned three minutes later. The American was in contention to set a WR and they go, "The dramatic conclusion of the women's 800 right after this."

Seriously, fark NBC. Fark them so hard.

What got me...is IT IS A TAPED EVENT? THEY COULD HAVE JUST BROUGHT IT BACK AT THE EXACT TIME THEY LEFT IT!

I'm watching the Pro Football HOF ceremony since it is down the road (I technically snubbed Vinny Testaverde today). Wonder if they'll show Blade Runner in primetime.

It was impressive to watch. I think you were in the spoilers thread, but I figure this should be in the earlier post. Everyone should go right now and watch the last 5-10 minutes of the woman's triathlon. That was intense.

BTW the round format sucks, instead of the semi-finals being when they're down to 16 runners with the top 4 from each going to the final, the semi-final is now when they have 32 runners and only the top to 2 go to the final.

One thing to watch out for: If you have a false start, you're out. No second chance. Doesn't matter if you're the favorite to win a medal. False start? Go home.

So if you have cable, it's on nbc's olympics site. If you don't, download expat shield and head over to the bbc site and watch it there.

Bolt showed everything anyone else needs to know. He can run 10.09 without even stretching his legs out enough to get his full stride length, or putting forth anything that can be described as real effort. What does the rest of the field know now? "We're doomed".

Yeah, but you don't want to pour it on so hard that you hurt yourself, or be so fast out of the block that you false-start and get eliminated.

2012-08-04 08:37:00 PM
Bolt took roughly the same number of steps as everyone else in that heat. When he set the world record, he was taking about 12 steps less than everyone else. That's how long his strides are.

There isn't much of one really, there's a slight sound when the shoe hits the track, but the crowd noise will totally drown that out. And even without much crowd noise, not going to hear it.

Okay, I know beach volleyball and these girls are popular, but this was a round-of-16 match, and they were whipping up on their opponents. Do they really need to devote so much time to them, when there were so many amazing things today?

Can someone explain how, if this is on tape-delay, they cut out the middle part of the match when they show commercials? Just extend it the Olympics show, and show it all. You can show TV until one in the morning one Saturday night, haven't you people ever heard of SNL?

BTW for anyone wondering why it's top 2 from each semi and then the top 2 times who didn't qualify, they instituted a A-standard qualification rule for the Olympics. Only those runners who get the A-standard time or better can run in the Olympics, so they didn't have enough runners to end up with four semifinals. Which brings up the issue of changing the format with semifinals themselves. And the A-standard thing is just stupid.

CSB:

In the early 1960s, my dad was a teacher/coach at a new high school, and they had to paint the lines on the track. They got the official track and field manual, that explained how to do it, with the staggered starting positions, etc. It was so complicated, they couldn't figure out how to do it.

So, my dad sat down and figured it out for himself. He realized it was a lot easier than the official method, so he sent his method to the track and field association.

They adopted his method.

IIRC, half your age +7 years or the age of consent in your jurisdiction, whichever is older, is the traditional standard for the minimum age of your sexual partner. CSB: A friend of mine in law school who was in his early 30's briefly dated a 19 year old. It did not work out well.

Of course then you have to account for "And then on the last 50, she ended up lunging forward and beating Ryan Lochte" vs. "And then she was up by 10 seconds but dead tired, so she laid off". Constant's good enough.

ariseatex: NIXON YOU DOLT!!!!!: Polish Hussar: Kenny B: They should have little flags following them.

Yeah, that would be neat. I like how they have the world record line on the pool

The problem I have with that is it assumes a constant pace throughout the event. It would be biatchin if they could make it mimic the actual record holding race, like racing a ghost in Mario Kart.

Give it ten years. I have a feeling they'll be doing this by then.

they do that in skiing and bobsled events in winter olympics. Maybe luge/skeleton too but cant remember for sure on those

I think part of it has to do with socioeconomics. Back in the days of depression and oppression, some of the best boxers were jewish.

Saying black athletes are faster due to race is about as valid as saying that white people are better at equestrian dressage because of their race.

BTW the world record in the triple jump is held by a white Englishman. Kinda deflates the whole white people can't jump as far or run as fast argument. Oh and before Michael Johnson broke the record back in 96, the world record in the 200 meter dash was held by an Italian and had been around since 79.

If he does, it'll probably only be in a few events here and there. But, I think he is done. Saying that you have as many golds as the number of total medals that anyone has is a pretty strong argument for never having to prove yourself.

Heptathlon is 7 events. You get points based on your scores in each of them. She had a decent lead going into the finals and she is a better runner than thrower.

Decathlons will be later with 10 events.

Heptathlon. Seven different athletic events. She had a big lead in points through 6. The points are how they combine timed events like this 800m and measured events like the high jump.

Nope, the long jump was going on when Ennis won.

Joe_diGriz: Why is it that, even had she lost, she still would have won?

In the heptathlon and decathlon as well, you get points based on your performance in each event. The points are based on values on an established table, so where you finish in each event is immaterial. In the last event if you're in the lead you just have to make sure whoever is in second doesn't finish ahead of you by whatever the margin is that would earn them enough points to surpass you.

I just checked it out (wiki so take with what you will) and it turns out that law was changed in 2003. Not sure if it works backwards, but now you have to be 18.

By backwards if you own a page 3 with a 16 year old, I don't know if that is child porn in England now or not.

Weird to see how different the laws are between here and there (yes i know states are diff too). I just can't imagine the idea of laws lower than 18. Just seems icky.

I'm curious, what all did they not mention in the NBC coverage? I would hope that they show the domination in the Olympic stadium by GB for one? It was nice for example that GB's Mo Farah and American Galen Rupp won 1-2 seeing as how they're really good friends off the track.

To put Galen Rupp's silver into perspective, no American has metaled in the event since 1964.

That was what I was looking for, I have a friend that is a coach for Slovania and wanted to see his girl jump. I found the replay on NBC's site, but its the full 4+ hour morning session, talk about finding a needle in a haystack.

You would think with NBC's quest to edit the crap out of things, they could edit up smaller replays, with the sports being put together.

Wow, I just looked at the list of "celebrities" who are on Stars Earn Stripes. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel, maybe you get one star if you put Crewes and Cain together. Eve's probably the third biggest person on the show and she's only probably WWE's 5th biggest Diva (Yelly Kelly, AJ, Beth, and dammit I'm counting Kharma when Vince unswerves life).

These promos have now just made me sadder.

See ya in the spoiler thread. I'm ready to watch Murray cry. It'll be tears of joy or tears of "oh so close" but dammit, we know he is going to give NBC the tears they want. I just hope the crowd goes 100 percent him for once and not for Roger. They owe him that after the speech at Wimbledon.
