When department stores start carrying hats that will fit my 8 1/2 size head, I'll start wearing them, trilbys look best on me but these L/XL and One Size pieces of shiat do not fit.

I used to have a coonskin cap with a tail.

It was the 1970s. Stop judging me. I was 10.

Hats have always been in style. It's the wankers not wearing them that were in the wrong.

"Today, hats are about self-expression and making an accessible fashion statement," he said. "Hats are now a casual accessory that can turn a pair of shorts and a top into an outfit."

I used to wear a fedora pretty regularly. Of course, that was 10 -12 years ago, and I was young enough to pull off anything and make it look "kind of" cool.

Agree with you about the XL sizes, but there are websites that cater to us big-headed folks. If you're willing to shell out the real $$, Tilley in particular makes high-quality durable hats and includes an 8+ size.

And yes, as a (mostly) bald glasses-wearing guy living in the Seattle area, I find a wide-brimmed hat to be essential. Helps with those occasional sunny days, too.

This one, but 1936 isn't turn-of-the-century is it.

I have been wearing the same style pork pie hat every day for 32 years. For decades I got shiat for being too young for the hat. Now, aparently I am too old.

Hats will never go out of style. It's just that we now have the next five years to think they are cool, the decade after that to think they are passe and the following decade to think they are "retro".

By 2032 things should settle back to normal.

Me too. In another hat thread someone posted some site that gives you what hat types youd actually look good in given your facial structure, turns out i needed a wider brim... something like a panama, but those are almost always white and i havent found a cheap one in a darker color yet (because pale guys dont look right in light colored hats...)

$95 is a little steep since im not yet a hat guy. :-/

Try being a woman who wears a size 8 hat. I gave up years ago. Plus I'm short, and have floofy, curly hair; forget it. Hat shopping is just depressing.

well again I learn something new on Fark.

Fascinator hats: ridiculous, expensive sculptural things you pin on your head. The fascinator does not fit on the crown of your head and does not protect you from sun, wind or rain.

That's racist!

Kidding.

But anyway, if you are young, wearing a brimmed hat makes you a douchebag. Don't do it.

If you are old, nobody pays attention to you, go ahead, knock yourself out.

O NOES! HATS ARE BACK IN FASHION! It is the thing I have feared for all of my life!

I hope this is just a fad for women. Men's hats were one of the stupidest ideas in history. I look like a dork in most hats. The one exception seems to be silk top hats, but you have to be rich to wear those and they cost like, $600 or something, probably more, when they are new. Why would anybody want to pay the price of a good television for something street urchins throw snow balls at and the wind forces you to chase down the street like a chump until a horse steps on it and your head?

For some reason, I seem to know an awful lot about hats despite them being out of style for most of my life, and I don't like them.

When I was a kid and you had to do genealogy the hard, on paper, I found a book that described Saint John, New Brunswick, and the arrival of the Loyalist refugees there in 1783. They had several milliners in a population of 4,000 or so, so they didn't lack for the latest fashions from Paris or London, and they had five or six taverns, but most of the people where living in tents and didn't know where they would finally settle or whether their petitions and claims would be granted. It was a refugee camp. But it was a refugee camp full of people from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, etc. Many of them were humble or well-to-do farmers, but many of them were urban middle class and some had money with them. It was sort of like the Klondyke gold rush without the gold, the dancing girls and with rather more churches in tents.

It was probably a lot funnier and more tragic than Richard Adams Gogafrinchams after they crash-landed on Earth.

I hate hats. I hate the bother, the expense, and the way they look on me. Fortunately I am middle-aged and can just ignore the fashion even when it becomes mandatory.
