The study makes the troubling accusation that female consumers are jealous of spokeswomen who are made out to be paragons of strength and attractiveness, suggesting that's one reason why ads focused on female athletes' physicality are unsuccessful. "A female looking at an attractive female, as opposed to saying 'I want to be like that,' actually has a negative reaction," said Robinson.

So we're just jealous, spiteful harpies who hate to see other attractive women be successful? Got it.

Whatever she was selling? Hell, I'd buy two, along with the extended service scam warranty and a full line of third-party accessories that don't quite work properly with the product.

That's what they said, it seems. I have a different idea.

Men want to see women who will fark them. You show a product to a guy and present an image that says, "This shiat will get you LAID! And here's the girl who'll want to fark you!" and the guy will say, "Umm... okay. Gimme two!"

Women want to see themselves - only more attractive, more hip, and more successful. Show a woman an image that says, "Look at this LIFE! It's PERFECT! And it's all because she bought this shiat!" and the woman will say, "Oooooohh... How many you got?"

But show that man a woman he knows he can never get to fark him, or show a woman another woman she can never hope to be anything like, and it all falls apart.

That's my totally-pulled-out-of-my-ass, completely-based-on-observation hypothesis, at least.

I think it makes sense, in a roundabout way.

I think it also might have something to do with how women are socialized when we're growing up. We're taught (or we simply internalize) that our worth is directly proportional to our looks. We grow to see attractive women as threats, since they might be perceived as more "valuable" than us. Advertisements showing beautiful, youthful and successful women are almost saying "SEE! You'll never have this life because you aren't PRETTY ENOUGH!".

I know from personal experience that when I see an ad with an attractive woman I notice her and not the product she's selling - the two are almost never connected. I look at her bone structure, how long are her legs, how large are her breasts, how white are her teeth etc etc. It doesn't make me feel threatened (maybe because I have a healthy level of self esteem - who knows?) but it certainly doesn't make the product she's advertising any more appealing.

This is my totally-pulled-out-of-my-ass theory.

It's interesting, how girls are socialized. On the one hand, yes - it's all about our bodies being sexually attractive and available to men. At the same time, we're socialized to fight that and be strong, independent women who don't give a fark about what men think and want more, be more, do more in a world that's still geared to pay us less, promote us less often, and discount our ideas out of hand.

So, we're supposed to be all that and a bag of chips just to be normal, while men... being men is enough. Money helps. Women who don't fark you are just biatches.

Huh. I watch a lot less advertising lately now that I have a DVR, but that's kinda interesting. However, I think it depends on the product.

Beauty products (including bras, etc.) tend to still use the typical supermodel-looking woman.

But then when it comes to say, household products, its typically someone that looks like a typical woman. They're always attractive to the average person, but they're more normal. Because, yeah, like you say... a "supermodel" type would distract from the message that Tide is better than the leading competetor or whatever.

No, but when ads are "focused on female athletes' physicality," you think, "Whore. Not like me." It's not that she's attractive, it's that she's letting herself be pimped. Perfectly understandable reaction.

That yogurt ad with Jennie Finch is a prime example. They take an athlete, who was so good in her sport that they discontinued it as an Olympic event because it wasn't fair to other countries, and make her into a soccer mom.

Olympic swimmer and gold medal winner Missy Franklin made news with the announcement that she will be retaining her amateur status for the next four years. As such, she "stands to lose millions in endorsement deals," reports Forbes.

And this is why I have such respect for her. She's obviously not driven by money, wants to keep doing what she's doing because it makes her happy, and probably understands that what she's accomplished has opened doors that will never shut for her (some will, some won't), and she's willing to wait a little longer for a payoff because she wants to finish experiencing being a kid, and wants to experience being a collegiate athlete with all the college experience that she would miss out on. The interviews with her showed more of that, from her keeping the same coach despite criticism that he had never trained Olympic level athletes, to her family deciding to stay put instead of moving somewhere with a badass swimming program because they understand that their teenage daughter needs friends and community more than an Olympic medal and endorsements.

I'm not Missy Franklin, so I can't answer for her. If she wants to maintain her amateur status so maybe she qualifies for World and Olympic competitions down the road, who's to say she made the wrong decision?
