The only guy I'd have sex with is myself

Threre's a threshold level of same-sex attraction that must be reached before a person would actually do it.

Lots of people out there that are straight as a laser beam, but if they were hypothetically stranded on an island for years with only a same-sex supermodel for companionship, and an unlimited supply of booze, and hypothetically knew for a fact that nobody would ever find out, might eventually give it a shot.

/I am not a sex behavioralist, but my guess would be "And sooner than later".

Women's sexuality is much more fluid than men's.
The ladies do seem to be more prone to bisexual experimentation than the fellows do.
I mean, (ladies:) who here hasn't fooled around with a girlfriend just to see what it would be like?

It happens. I do think a lot of women drop the bi label once they settle down though.

Next up: Proof that all lesbians just need a good deep dicking from a manly man to become straight.

Which raises an important question. How many "experiments" does it take with the same sex before a woman is considered bisexual?

I know there's a double standard there as well. it seems like if a guy fools around with another man he's labelled gay, at least by other men.

2012-08-04 04:01:51 PM

TheBigJerk: I suspect women are more likely to be bisexual because evolutionarily speaking, gay sex was/is likely to get you murdered while lesbian sex was/is likely to get you a mate.

Nah. Homosexuality isn't a big deal for large swaths of cultures and history, and society hasn't existed long enough for it to change our genetic makeup. Savin-Williams' theory at least works on several different levels, as defensive arousal is documented and rape is found in nature as much as any other sexual behavior.

miss diminutive: How many "experiments" does it take with the same sex before a woman is considered bisexual?

Considered? Hell if I know. Actually so? The number of experiments doesn't matter. It's an issue of arousal, which is where this study draws a dubious conclusion. They measured pupil dilation and surveyed self-declared sexual preference, but didn't track when any subjects got "in the mood". They got the correlation they wanted and sure it may filter out some statistical noise in the form of denial or dishonest feedback (for example, a guy so terrified of homosexuality he'd never admit to getting turned on by a guy masturbating, even anonymously). But methinks there's still quite a gap between pupil dilation and puddle-on-the-floor horny.

miss diminutive: One Bad Apple: miss diminutive: Study researcher Ritch Savin-Williams, a psychology professor at Cornell, said women's less-distinct preference for men may be the result of a defense mechanism that evolved to protect women from forced sexual intercourse. If a woman can become aroused with any sort of sexual simulation, the lubrication that results can protect her from injuries.

Well isn't that a pleasant thought.

Is it pleasant enough to get you aroused ?

/Sorry
//This thread is wasted in the geek tab

It probably should. Apparently I should be in a state of constant arousal to protect my vagina on the off chance some guy gets that rapey vibe.

No... you should always carry a katar(Or the like) and use it to punch the rapey animals in the face and junk until they stop.

If you can even remotely imagine some way that sex with a same-sex partner could possibly be fun, even if you would never go there for real, you're bisexual to that degree.

/Guess what - you're normal.

//I've boinked many a female, doesn't mean I'm straight.

I have always thought that girls that claim sex with women is absolutely gross or disgusting and they are 100% into guys were actually butch lesbians deep down, because, why are they so into guys?

studebaker hoch: We're all bisexual to some degree.

Yup. Its a scale. Even in the gay community (I'm not, but live in a very gay friendly city and a good percentage of my friends are)... there's still a scale. I know lesbians that are very open about discussing their sexuality, and indeed they've been attracted to men from time to time. Though its much more rare than women. I don't care for the label "bi-sexual" because I remember when that became trendy.

I'm sure there's evidence to back up this utterly preposterous evolutionary claim, right?

Pretty much agree with you here. I don't think its been proven that homosexuality (or any sexuality on the scale from straight --- bi --- homosexual) to be genetic at all. And genetics is all that is carried through evolution.

Now, we do have cultural evolution. For example, our American society initially evolved to condone homosexuality. But I don't think that could affect real evolution. It just made gays more closeted.

Now its becoming more accepted. So, yeah, more gays out of the closet. But are there going to be more actual gays over 100, 200 years? No way.

Yes, absolutely. Even though most gays would never consider acting it out, they can all see certain females and think "you know...in another life..."

It's a matter of self-identification. And it's not really a double standard that men are considered gay after some experimentation and women are not. It's a combination of homophobia and misogyny: only sex with a dude "counts" in either scenario. It plays out differently with different genders, but the same effect is at work.

miss diminutive: dragonchild: miss diminutive: If a woman can become aroused with any sort of sexual simulation, the lubrication that results can protect her from injuries.

Well isn't that a pleasant thought.

Not the first I've heard of it. Women have been known to become physically aroused and even orgasm when being violently raped. From an evolution perspective, it's better than hemorrhaging to death.

It makes the emotional fallout a million times worse, though. Confusion, guilt, suicidal depression and a crisis of self-worth. In way too many cases they convince themselves they weren't even raped because they "enjoyed" it, and most guys are happy to accept that explanation. And if they're hyper-religious with a couple of tone-dead prudes for parents? Make the trauma a billion times worse. What with how woefully inadequate our mental health support system is, odds are very slim the victim gets some semblance of a normal life back.

I do know one friend who was raped and experienced this defense mechanism. Luckily she's a smart girl (areligious too) and knew about it beforehand. That didn't make the victimization any easier, but she was spared the confusion and much of the trauma.

Honestly, that's the first time I've ever heard of it although it really does make sense from the perspective you mentioned. I could definitely see that kind of physical response being a complete mindfark for those women who didn't know.

I read the story of a woman who experienced her first orgasms while being raped by several men. Her husband divorced her because of this reason. She *came to realize that constant genital friction would cause orgasm regardless of willingness. Sad story.

I agree; I figure that genetics influence the odds of an individual being gay, but I think hormones and even random chance play a big factor(and perhaps infanthood).

Heck, there's studies that show that the more sons a woman has the more likely her next son will be gay. Not daughters, sons.

dragonchild: Some women have been known to become very promiscuous after a sexual assault. This has often been attributed to a simple crisis of self-worth, but -- and I admit I'm speculating here because data is sketchy to nonexistent -- I think if they had the "defensive arousal" response, becoming a slut is often the only way they can make sense of what happened. "I got horny while being raped, well this must be who I am, then."

I have seen this too, but I attribute it more to gain control over a very intimate aspect of their very personal live that they completely lost control of for a moment.
