Another startling discovery by Dr. Romero.

2012-08-04 09:05:14 AM
Study researcher Ritch Savin-Williams, a psychology professor at Cornell, said women's less-distinct preference for men may be the result of a defense mechanism that evolved to protect women from forced sexual intercourse. If a woman can become aroused with any sort of sexual simulation, the lubrication that results can protect her from injuries.

Well isn't that a pleasant thought.

It probably should. Apparently I should be in a state of constant arousal to protect my vagina on the off chance some guy gets that rapey vibe.

I wonder if the participants were aware that they would be watching people masturbating as part of the study.

I can just see some prudish type thinking they were signing up for a simple psychological study being shocked and appalled that they basically had to watch men and women touch themselves in naughty, naughty ways in the name of science.

That's a good question - were they aware of what they'd be watching? And their responses would have been interesting. Maybe the ones protesting the most (or squirming the most) would be the ones whose pupils dilate the most.

Wait... studying pupil dilation while making them watch video?

Did they graph that against the relative light level coming off the screen?

If the female scenes were filmed with even a slightly lower light level... say a different color room background or a slightly closer camera or something...

It's been known for a whole that women have arousal responses to practically any sexual imagery. This is not the same thing as sexual orientation. So unfortunately, this is another case of totally crap sexuality science.

Let me give you an example of how arousal/choice of porn doesn't indicate orientation. A lot of lesbians like watching gay porn. This doesn't make lesbians gay men, or even bisexuals, which would imply significant attraction to 2+ genders over the long term.

I wish all women were bi since I'm actually bi. That would be awesome. But it's not the case.

Not the first I've heard of it. Women have been known to become physically aroused and even orgasm when being violently raped. From an evolution perspective, it's better than hemorrhaging to death.

It makes the emotional fallout a million times worse, though. Confusion, guilt, suicidal depression and a crisis of self-worth. In way too many cases they convince themselves they weren't even raped because they "enjoyed" it, and most guys are happy to accept that explanation. And if they're hyper-religious with a couple of tone-dead prudes for parents? Make the trauma a billion times worse. What with how woefully inadequate our mental health support system is, odds are very slim the victim gets some semblance of a normal life back.

I do know one friend who was raped and experienced this defense mechanism. Luckily she's a smart girl (areligious too) and knew about it beforehand. That didn't make the victimization any easier, but she was spared the confusion and much of the trauma.

No, I'm not suggesting that. Nor do I think it's true that contemporary lesbian identity (I'd say "queer culture" to be accurate) is threatened by bisexuality or queerness in any form it comes in. I also don't think sexual orientation has been remotely deconstructed as a useful concept, although I think it has been challenged by mainly queer women on the grounds that aspects of it are more applicable to men, like the concept of having a fixed identity over time. There are continually evolving ways of describing sexual orientation, but some aspect of identity will always exist as a descriptor of people who like X, Y or Z, and the descriptor of women who still principally like women is still "lesbian" and I don't see any problems with it - it's a bigger problem that women who like women and also male-bodied, male-identified people generally go unrecognized in both pop culture and queer culture.

Meh, it's just an adjective to describe a preference. I like bacon; mushrooms make me retch. It's not the mushroom's fault; I just can't stand the damn things. I'd rather eat bacon, and when I call myself a "carnivore" people get the point. I'm into farking women, I'm not in the least bit physically attracted to men. If I was gay, I'd be gay. I'm just not. It's convenient to call that "heterosexual".

The words can still mean things; the mistake is thinking there's any deal to be made over sexual preference. No one gives a shiat anymore if someone is left-handed; sexuality is about as meaningless as far as self-worth is concerned. I care more if you cut me off in traffic, you asshole.

That's good for you, but as the fat tards lining up to buy fast food chicken to prove how much they hate gay people demonstrate, not everybody feels that way.

There is a big deal to be made about sexual preference if you have one that isn't the majority, because you are fewer in number and marked out as different. These things all have implications. On the one hand there's hostility, on the other, there's community and a culture that parallels the heterosexual one.

Some women have been known to become very promiscuous after a sexual assault. This has often been attributed to a simple crisis of self-worth, but -- and I admit I'm speculating here because data is sketchy to nonexistent -- I think if they had the "defensive arousal" response, becoming a slut is often the only way they can make sense of what happened. "I got horny while being raped, well this must be who I am, then."

It's one reason among many I have a seething hatred for organized religion and their crusade against knowledge. The ability to understand one's own body on an academic level makes a HUGE difference. Sexual assault shouldn't happen, but it does, and the more everyone knows about these sorts of things, the better. Again, my friend managed to survive her assault, well, psychologically damaged but in the long run she made it back to well-adjusted. If all a woman knows is "sex is evil and if you enjoy it you're a whore" herpa derp, the "defensive arousal" response isn't just a mindfark; it can outright break them. If I hear of a churchgoing woman getting raped the first thing I'd suggest is putting them on 24-hour suicide watch just in case.

Oh, I grok. Not that I've had it that bad, but similar ostracization has been known to happen among, say, racially homogenous schools. The lone kid the wrong color gets it about as bad. Religion is, in my experience, not the modifier of human behavior it's made out to be. It's the opposite. Religion is what allows people to justify what they'd do otherwise. That why people convert, defect. . . they literally shop for religions. If one makes living too hard, they move to a different one.

So, it's really just that people are stupid assholes who never fail to have an excuse to be jerks to those they see as different. They don't oppose homosexuality because it's a sin; they oppose it because they think it's yucky so they'll pore over every damn line in the Old Testament to find that one phrase they can use as a weapon. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna look through scripture to find evidence that eating mushrooms is evil.

I had six male anoles in a terrarium.
The smallest one got to play the "female" role with all that entails.
At feeding time, the largest lizard got to eat first, the smallest one, second and everybody else had to scramble for what was left.
This (cool) story (bro) has nothing to do with anything, really and it's totally not a bookmark in case this thread takes off in an interesting direction.
