I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it's something prion-based like mad cow or CJD. Then again, this isn't the first mass outbreak of weird neurological issues in Africa - as I recall, there was an instance where there was an epidemic of uncontrollable laughing somewhere in Subsaharan African that was never explained.

Who cares what we call it, the important part is who do we blame?

Whatever it is I'm betting sanitation, clean water and good nutrition would fix 95% of it.

It sounds like they are dying of rhythm overdose. They have too much rhythm but no microphones to lay their beats with. It's causing their bodies to go into shock. Two solutions, either get them some basketballs or build convenience stores for them to hold up. This will disperse that rhythm build up and the nodding to music only they can hear will subside. Let's save lives people!

While much remains unknown, the participants did settle on an official name - nodding syndrome - and a case definition that will help field workers in all three countries determine the extent of its spread.

*nods head in agreement*

Ugandan. Africa is a continent.

Maybe in another couple of weeks they will decide that the kids with the syndrome are not, in fact, orcs.

thamike: Ugandan. Africa is a continent.

The kids affected by it in Tanzania, South Sudan, and possibly Kenya, Liberia and Cameroon (according to TFA) might take offense at being called Ugandan... but I'm pretty sure they're all African.

Thank God it's not affecting white kids. That would be a tragedy.

Is the scientific progress in subby's world all out of "Boink"?

So you're saying there's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do?

I'm just relieved they reached agreement on the critical issue of whether it's a "disease" or a "syndrome." I'm sure that was the number one priority for the kids suffering from it.

Most likely it's witches.

Y'all be careful out there.

I'm pretty sure even Ugandans would take offense at being called Ugandan.
