I think they had a hard time selling the AppleTV at first because the remote only has one button on it.

I just bought an Apple TV, the remote is an absolute joke.

Now that Apple TV is selling so well, the paid shills and brainwashed douchebags will have more threads where they can regurgitate "opinions" that somebody else wrote for them.

This is true. Searching for anything is a chore. That said, I think there's an Apple developed app for iOS devices that you can use as a remote. I'm thinking they'll hope you'll get fed up just enough to buy an iPad or iPhone, but not dump the box altogether. At any rate, it is a pretty wonderful little device even without Hulu Plus or Amazon.

I agree. I much prefer the iPhone Remote app.

I think AppleTV users very much need to ask themselves: What if it were you hanging upon this wall?

Can I stream local content through it from a hard drive or NAS? Without having to import it into iTunes? Which generally means a format conversion? No?

Yeah, I have a little box running Android 2.1 that perfectly streams any media on my NAS. I don't think I'll be ditching it anytime soon.

I don't think there are many people who are considering or own an Apple TV who don't already own an iOS device. I bought one solely for it's Airplay integration, additional features being sheer bonus. A hundred bucks to get my iOS video and audio through the TV and speakers? It's really changed how my living room's worked.

Seriously, I could talk all day about the thing. But then I'd sound like an Apple whore and Fark in general as a certain allergy towards 'em.

I have four iOS devices, and the remote is an exercise in form over function. I installed the remote app on my iPad. Yes, it's fine. That is no excuse to include a lousy remote.

I have a Roku, but I bought the Apple TV just to watch Olympics Live coverage over Airplay. Roku remote is vastly superior. Airplay is kind of flaky. "Hey, where is the Airplay icon?"

Oh look, another Gizmodo article jizzing all over an Apple product:
"1.3 million: That's how many Apple TVs the company sold in the last quarter alone. Want a jaw-dropping frame of reference? Apple sold more Apple TVs in the last nine months than it did iMacs and Mac Pros. Combined."

Big farking whoopdeedoo. We get it, Apple doesn't sell that many computers anymore (which is why their computer marketshare is now slipping).

In comparison, the king of the living room, the Xbox 360 has been on the market now for *7* years, is still selling 1.3 million units a quarter - sold a total 67 million units, and has more monthly subscribers than the nation's largest cable company, Comcast.

I find it funny that the same people who belittle Microsoft for having ~5% market share for smart phones, turn right around and tout how magical the sales are of products like the Apple TV. At least they finally upgraded it to do 1080p. I got tired of hearing the excuses of how the old Apple TV's 720p was more than good enough.

2012-08-04 03:56:25 AM
Not that I like Apple very much, but it's always pretty amusing to step into one of these threads and see the roughly 10 to 1 ratio of idiots complaining about Apple shills to actual Apple shills.

I agree. In the 1 or 2 times a year I have to eat at McD's I get the filet o' fish and a small fry. One time I was there a woman gave a buy 1 get 1 free coupon and I now understand why more than 1 is more than enough, even when you scrape most of the tartar sauce off.

Reality does not support your statement.
Link

"But, even if you dismiss the 17 million iPads Apple sent out last quarter, that still leaves the Cupertino company with about 6 million in "real" computer shipments. While that's not enough to earn Apple the top spot in PC sales, it improves upon numbers from last year. It also continues Apple's seemingly unflappable trend of growth as it creeps up on the likes of Dell and Acer."

Actually, Hulu Plus is now available on Apple TV: Link

And in the last few days Apple has allowed Amazons video service onto iPhone/iPod/iPad, so I wouldn't be at all surprised for it to pop up on the Apple TV as well soon.

In case this is a huge mystery to some people... it's just as much about giving AppleTV customers choice as it is avoiding the huge anti trust suit by some smaller content provider that doesn't want to play by Apple's rules. Apple can't be accused of forcing companies out if their main competitors are on board.

Going off topic, but I had a wonderful idea: What if, for one day, Fark would automatically change all comments in such a way that typing "Apple" would end up as "Samsung", "iPhone" became "Android" and vice versa once the comment was submitted. Nope (based on UK)

1) None of these companies is going to give exclusive rights to Apple. The only exclusive thing about it are iTunes movies, and if you're using a Samsung TV, you can already rent from Blinkbox. And you've got LoveFilm which the Apple box doesn't have. In the US, you already have Amazon video and Hulu plus on a Roku box.
2) No-one sees your Apple TV. There's no conspicuous consumption value.

In the US, a Roku will do Amazon video,

Yes:

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer).

Granted, you have to do some minor twiddling with the format, but how hard is that?

Anyone care to comment on Hulu Plus for AppleTV? I had Hulu+ after dropping cable for about a month, using Roku devices, and it was just terrible. Shows would consistently and repeatedly lock up the device at like the 7:00, and keep doing it at set intervals if you tried to fast-forward past the "trouble" spot. Plus like half the crap Hulu had available you couldn't get via the Roku.

Tempted to sign up for the free trial again to see if it's any better, but just curious if anyone has been using it yet?

Works beautifully. Same sort of interface as Netflix for it. And one-better, it has recommendations based on what you watch, like Netflix. I found out there's a ton of Cinematic Titanic (one of the MST3K spinoffs) because of that feature, which isn't on my Sony Blu-ray player's H+ app.

I wish they would open it up to outside developers like the iphonepad, though. I hate playing the jailbreak/update/jailbreak game.
