I used to work next to a meat processing facility. There are few things on earth that smell worse than rotting entrails.

The standard mini-bio for author Tom Holt concludes: "Now a full-time writer, Tom lives in Somerset, with his wife, one daughter and the unmistakable scent of blood, wafting in on the breeze from the local meat-packing plant."

That'd actually be an improvement

Fresh entrails, on the other land, smell divine.

2 years ago a friend and I were on I5 on a really hot day when traffic came to a standstill near Tacoma. The smell was overwhelming. Apparently a load of rotting guts had spilled on the hot hot asphalt and troopers were cleaning it up. OMG, i will never forget that.

*gag

Yes, but was it ORGANIC guts?

There is way too little information in this article. Were all the guts from one kind of animal or was it a guts medly? Where were the animal guts going; where were they coming from? Is it just normal to have a truck'o'guts tooling around Sioux city? Are they mandated to write "Truck'o'Guts" on the side of their gut trucks? (please say yes...)

driver apparently had to stop suddenly, which forced some of his load to slosh out.

Like that hasn't happened to a few of us.

My significant other was looking for a tenure track professor gig a couple of years ago. Many schools were in major cities or quaint little college towns. One she went to interview for was in a tiny town in Iowa three hours drive from the nearest commercial airport, and they had not one, but two processing plants that she said gave the small town a pervasive stink.

I thank my lucky stars she didn't end up there.

It's a stylized picture of a cow eating grass, with its back half cut away and intestines falling out into a mass behind it - flies everywhere.

I've seen this happen. It was an open top dump truck filled with what looked to be hog/cow left overs that were unsuitable even for the dog food factory. It was about midnight and appeared that the drive had to jerk the wheel and caused the enormous weight of his liquid/chunked cargo to shift and tipped his truck. A tanker truck with a big vacuum hose (much like a septic pumper) was on the scene when we passed. The smell was horrible and it took a minute to identify the random chunks of entrails that were glistening in the flashing red stop light. The next day we also had to wash the tires and wheel wells from the liquid animal leftovers being sprayed through the rubber ridges as the car tried to keep its traction. In short, YUK!

Came for the sewer city comment, leaving satisfied.

/maybe I'll avoid going through there on the way back to Omaha.

Off the Interstate and away from the stockyards it's not nearly as bad. It's still kind of dumpy in some parts, but it's been awhile since I've been there.

/Stone State Park just north is really nice, tho
//So are the Loess Hills just to the south for those who like a peaceful drive

I would think rotting animal innards would be an improvement.

Believe it or not, rotting soy beans are much worse than rotting guts. The smell is enough to make a maggot gag.

Just now went and lit a candle for you. That is one life's ugliest jobs

/I raise beef, but I damn sure don't go the processor with'em

This.

The meat plant is right by the highway and upwind.

Plus the bastards have gone and put speed cameras on I-29 to go with the decade-long construction project and stupidly low speed limit.
