I'd watch archery, and judo, and wrestling, and a bunch of the non-mainstream sports. Besides, who cares who the over-hyped spoiled NBA brats trounce? Show me curling cuties.

Are people watching a lot of basketball? Its so painfully clear who's going to win the gold, and said team probably won't win any game by less than 20.

Just saying... its hard to be interested in something when you just know the outcome. I don't really care that much... but as a casual viewer, I'd only watch basketball if I was alerted to "OMG... USA is down 10 with a few minutes to go!"

I'll watch archery...whatever. I'll watch just about anything. Turn the TV on and surf the net on my laptop/ipad.

But, who cares about archery? If the favorite doesn't win gold does anyone even know? Quick, name me the greatest Olympic archer ever! deerp. Would you rush to your TV if someone texted you that the defending archery champ was down with only 3 arrows left...or whatever it is they do to keep score? Not me. So I'll watch, doesn't mean I'm interested in the slightest.

People still talk about Olympic basketball 40 years after the US took silver in 72'. The Dream Team is still argued over 20 years later.

If the US doesn't win gold...it matters the world over. Basketball matters.

No. No it doesn't.

So, the basketball is the in round robin stage and archery is awarding medals. I would much rather watch (almost) any medal match/event that a opening stage basketball game. I am encouraged to see people watching something other than the mainstream sports but it seems alot early to make a comment on how many people watched which sports.

Watching is a good first step, I suppose. Next, hopefully it leaeds to an increase in people actually taking up the sport.

And by the way, subby, Hunger Games was a pretty decent book and movie (the second book isn't that good and the third sucks, though), and very good relative to tween books. It's not Twilight with arrows.

If last night team showed up, they might beat the dream team.

I'd love to see the NCAA men's champions play as a team in the Olympics. No NBA hot dogs. No cherry picked college ringers. The best unpaid non-professional team in the US gets the nod.

2012 - Kentucky
2008 - Kansas
2004 - Connecticut
2000 - Michigan St
1996 - Kentucky
1992 - Duke

The handful of seniors and others that went on to play professionally would not be eligible. Not perfect or anything, but as a certified Olympic nut, I'd just love to have a reason to tune into basketball again.

rka: The Dream Team is still argued over 20 years later.

Yes, but mainly because of the questionable ethics of having a team of professionals in a game that previously had a very strict rule of "no professionals".

You and I must have seen different Hunger Games movies, because the one I saw kinda sucked.

I'm cool with archery, though. Haven't really shot anything since my fiberglass recurve bit the dust 25 years ago.

I got rid of the wheelie bow, it was getting too easy to hunt deer with it:

img138.imageshack.us

All kidding aside, that bow I'm shooting above is a hickory self-bow copied after the Sudbury bow, a bow "collected" from a dead Wampanoag back in the 1600's. It used to be a hickory tree in my father's backyard:

img189.imageshack.us

I put the leather handle/arrow rest on it, and I've replaced the hemp bowstring dad made with a synthetic one because the hemp one eventually broke. I also made that quiver, and the arrows.

I get your point. I guess I was just speaking from personal experience... just doesn't interest me this time around. The Dream Team did, certainly.

I watch and enjoy NBA. I like seeing the best players in the world play. The allstar games are crap. I wish the USA could field two teams. I wish Spain had Rubio. I wish the USA had Howard, Bosh, and Rose.

2012-08-03 04:17:07 PM
That's great that the lesser known Olympic sports are getting more interest. I mean there's more to the Olympics than swimming, beach volleyball, etc and some of them are pretty darn cool, such as shooting, archery, and Judo.

When the winter Olympics come on I watch curling. I dunno why but I find curling interesting and have been known to stay up at midnight to watch it. Good thing is curling has seem to gone more mainstream so staying up that long to watch it is not much of an issue anymore.

BTW I would totally watch a Hunger games like survival event in the Olympics.

2012-08-03 04:19:53 PM
Personally I think they should add 3D shooting to Olympic archery. Even better would be a 3D/Biathlon type of event. Have, say, a 3 to 5 kilometer course with targets at varying distances at shooting lanes along the way. Either have them run a short penalty lap for each miss, or take a minute off their time for each hit, and their score is their final time.

If the idea of foam animals is just too damned *ICKY* for the Olympics, you could make them in various standard shapes: A circle, a square, a triangle, etc. Something different than a standard FITA target.

People that like sports care. Seeing some of the best athletes in the world is always a good thing but I guess stick to wrestling, you obviously like seeing dudes grapple over seeing people play an actual sport.

Another cool idea: Full contact team archery. Last time that was played was at the Towton games.

I did find the Olympic Team Archery matches they televised strangely compelling. I didn't expect them to be but they were (though the targets need to be recalibrated and the 9 and 10 rings made much smaller- it sucks that someone who misses the center by 6" can get the same score as someone who hits it smack dead on)

Though, just for myself I'd rather the competition looked more like the pictures being posted here, with those stabilizer bars removed, holding the boy steady is part of the skill of archery, no?

You know USA wins Basketball and Swimming
You know China wins Gymnastics and Ping Pong
You know Roger Federer is going to win Men's Tennis

Overall you already know the favorites going into most of the events, but it's still worth watching just as entertainment.

Honestly are you not going to watch the sprinting events since you know Usain Bolt or Yohan Blake are going to win 90% of them?

Go to Bhutan sometime. Archery is thier national sport and they are fanatic about it (to the point that most people theorize that the reason they never win Olympic medlas is because the stadiums at the olympics are too quite with none screaming thier names or hurling abuse at them). In Bhutan it is completely legal to jump in front of your opponent as he is taking his shot to try to spoil his aim.

On another note, lots of pictures of women in this thread firing compound bows without chest guards. Great way to leave a welt on some perfectly nice breasts. Who knows, maybe they are into recreational whipping and wouldn't mind an extra bit of scarring.
