ImpendingCynic: StoneColdAtheist: FTFA: "Previously, he was in and out of jail on a variety of charges, including disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and driving violations."

Good thing it wasn't littering.

/HOPEs that's not obscure...

Would that be two little piles of obscure or one big pile?

Just one big pile, as in Alice's Restaurant*.

"And they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the
bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest
father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean 'n' ugly
'n' nasty 'n' horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me
and said, "Kid, whad'ya get?" I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay
$50 and pick up the garbage." He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?"
And I said, "Littering." And they all moved away from me on the bench
there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I
said, "And creating a nuisance."
And they all came back, shook my hand,
and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing,
father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the
bench."

Walker: There's not much crime in Maine

Are you farking kidding me? 3-4 years back a "nice couple" in the tiny town neighboring my tiny town were busted with over $200,000 in heroin and other opiates. A few years before that, in Lewiston, a middle-aged basement-dweller killed his mother on camera during a police standoff because she had instructed him to clean his room (the basement). Two years ago there was a driveby a few minutes from here.

Yes, Maine is white. They are also, specifically, white trash.

MrSteve007: FTA: "People who live in the downtown have been complaining about a variety of things, among them prostitution and public drinking.

On Thursday, police focused on both. Arrested for engaging in prostitution was Jessie Judd, 26, of Lewiston."

chupathingie: maddogdelta: And the guy who shot a housewife who was hanging laundry was let off with a warning because he thought she looked like a deer hanging laundry.

I remember that... happened just after I moved to Portland. I lived up on Munjoy Hill, which was supposedly a "rough neighborhood". I liked it, quiet compared to other cities. LA (Lewiston/Auburn) was a shiathole then, no surprise that hasn't changed. Even so, I moved from Portland to Dallas and worked graveyards outdoors doing CATV. We stayed armed. LA suddenly seemed like a tame shiathole.

Portland liked to keep their popo busy rounding up teh gheys in "Pickle Park" or on the Eastern Promenade and file public indecency charges. Not much going on up there.

Ah, yes, the days of Media Mike Chitwood. I lived and worked in Portland and talked to a few cops who said that they'd busted people they trusted more than him.

Isildur: StrangeQ: I had to read that twice to make sure it wasn't satire...

To be fair, the actual article made it clear it was a sweep in downtown Lewiston (a city with a population of only about forty-two thousand, according to Wikipedia), but mentioning that would make for a less amusing Fark headline.

What the colossal downtown area of Lewiston, ME may look like.

Only the section to the right of the river. The stuff to the right is Auburn, which has been surgically removing any aspects of soul it may have for as long as I can remember.

SuperT: Walker: There's not much crime in Maine because there aren't many people in Maine. And the people that are there are white....very very white.

At the 2010 Census, 94.4% of the Maine population was non-Hispanic White, 1.1% non-Hispanic Black or African American, 0.6% American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.0% Asian, 0.1% from some other race and 1.4% of two or more races. 1.3% of Maine's population was of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin (they may be of any race).

/this is not racist, this is Wikipedia

you just implied they don't have much crime because the population is mostly white. that's pretty racist.

Level of education and level of income are more related to crime than race. It just so happens people of minority races have a disadvantage when it comes to level of income and level of education. Funny how that happens in the land of equality isn't it? A lot of this has to do with how one particular minority group was forced to go unpaid and uneducated for generations.

"There's not much crime in Maine because there aren't many people in Maine. And the people that are there are well educated and middle-income....very very well educated and middle income."
