In MY dog's case, I'm guessing it's because he died two weeks ago.

Too soon?

Because we sprayed her this morning with a flea spray that smells like concentrated cloves. This is particularly problematic for me, because my taco meat recipe includes a heavy amount of ground cloves. As a result, whenever we spray her with the stuff, my mouth starts watering. I wish it were some succinct term to describe this biological response.

My Rottie gets smelly but he likes getting washed and swimming so it stays manageable.

Because it licks itself at night.

It's never too soon to bury or cremate your loved ones. Unless they're alive (but this problem takes care of itself).

when they're just hanging out, they like to roll around in dirt. And when you bathe them, they immediately go roll around in dirt afterwords. It's like polishing the brass on the Titanic.

Because he likes to go out and find the nastiest, smelliest roadkill (preferably dead skunks) to roll in immediately after getting a bath. Two weeks of him doing this until I finally tracked down where he was going in the afternoons and buried the damn thing. He'd come back with this big old stupid doggy grin on his face and stinking to high heaven, then fight me tooth and nail going into the little plastic kiddie pool I keep for the purpose.

Dopey-ass Shepard/sled dog/somethingorother mix. Great personality and smart as hell. But his choice of eau de cologne lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.

Cats are expert ass-lickers. Guess the key difference is their level of interest in what comes out of asses other than their own...

Suzy is a very clean doggie. This time of year I bathe her a little more frequently. But that's more to help shed that undercoat.

She's also not a farter.

She does smell like corn chips. Weird.

asmodeusazarak: Samoyeds have very little odor, so win for me.

Yea! Good for you. I've noticed that different breeds have different levels of doggy odor, no matter how often and well they are groomed. My Jindo is very nearly odor-free -- thank the doggy gods. Of course Samoyeds and Jindos do gift us with tumbleweeds of fuzz when they blow their coat, but daily brushing for about three weeks twice a year is well worth year around doggy odor in my book. Do you knit? (Caution, these photos make me itch so... and the Feline fur "jewelry" is just too much.)

On the other hand, even a very carefully maintained Xoloitzcuintli (aka Xolo or Mexican Hairless) can stink to high heaven.

I thought was just my dog. Now I know I'm not the only one.

But now whe have to get philosophical. Do dog's feet smell like Fritos, or do Fritos smell like dog's feet?

I've always found cats to be much more stinky, even comparing a well groomed cat to a pup that isn't. Yes, dogs can be smelly on occasion, but if you take care of the dog, their infrequent smelly episodes aren't something that will seep into the walls of a house. I've walked into houses and can smell the cat funk even if there hasn't been a cat living in the house in years.

My dogs stink because they roll around on the ground every day and get a bath about once a month. You try that and see how you smell.

I always find it amusing that people call cats "clean" animals. Yeah, the cat is clean, and the cat doesn't stink. But everything around him does. He'll lick himself clean, then vomit on your sofam piss on your rug, and shiat on your bed. Cats are just disgusting.

A good ionic air purifier should fix that. Healthy neutered cats that have an owner that takes proper care of the litter box usually use it their entire lives, they don't leave "cat smell" behind. That being said, cats with long hair between their toes and on their behind (both of which can get dirty, a sanitary clip at the vets may help), cats with foot problems, declawed cats, cats who are being threatened by something inside or outside may all avoid the litter box until the situation is fixed to their satisfaction. Yelling at, blaming, and abusing the animal only makes everything worse.

If a dog emits a "fear response" funk on a regular basis and is a fearful dog by nature you may be stuck with it. Your only hope may be trying to help them with behavior modification.

Mine never stink. Well, hardly ever.

It's one of the percs of having Malteses. They aren't peener substitutes, and can't defend the house, but they don't smell and don't shed.

/smell sort of like a cotton ball

Is it because she rolled in a dead seal? Because that's totally why My dog stinks.

I know this is a dog thread, but I'd like to note that my cat generally smells kinda like corn tortilla chips. What IS with that? One of his nicknames is Tortilla Cat now.
