GreenSun: People evolved from monkeys/chimps right? Why be offended at all? Besides, it's not like they were teasing the girl about being a monkey despite her not looking like one for a few months and that's why the little ad was made.

People should stop trying to make trouble out of nothing.

Wrong. We have a common ancestor.

Some people are just looking for a reason to be offended.

Seriously? This stupid fng commercial has been blasting the airwaves all week.

That's nothing! After the medal ceremony NBC faded -- TO BLACK -- before going to the commercial!

You're surprised?

The definition of "racism" has changed so much in the last four years or so.

2012-08-03 12:16:40 PM
It's more offensive that someone would make that sort of connection in their head in the first place.

cman: You're surprised?

I don't think the definition has changes as much as the interpretation of events. And it's been this way longer than we've had a black president.

I DNRTFA but I can imagine the promo was for that stupid animal hospital show with the little outbreak monkey. They've been pushing that abomination for months, of course they are going to run commercials for it during the Olympics.

2012-08-03 01:03:27 PM
That's stupid. For one thing, the monkey is wearing a men's gymnastics outfit.

/Also "Monkey Leotard" would be a good name for a band

2012-08-03 01:05:56 PM
There was no intended insult, obviously. It's not like the producers said "hey, NOW would be a great time for the first airing of this promo of a monkey doing gymnastics". It was simply a bunch of morons in the booth, none of whom had the grey matter or insight to say to the producer, "You know, maybe running the promo for the vet show should wait for a segment or two. We don't want to unintentionally offend people.".

Cats jumping ONTO couches would be a lot better. Let's see some lithe, perfectly tanned human jump five times their body height while also doing seven flips.

A) If NBC showed footage of the white Olympians, and then said "and now we're going to show some footage of Gabby Douglas", and showed a monkey doing gymnastics, that would be racist

B) Airing a commercial for something called "Animal Practice" with a monkey doing gymnastics is not racist

This should be easy for everyone, but apparently there are some people who don't understand B), and there are people in this thread who don't seem understand A). If you want to be taken seriously at any time, you shouldn't then say stuff like "the definition of racism has changed a lot in the last 4 years". That just shows yourself as a dimwit that nobody should listen to.

I was referring to the simple notion that the cries of racism have reached "Boy who cried wolf" levels. There is racism out there. There are many racist people. But, by continually describing non-racist things as racist waters down the sharpness the word should have.

Black people are obviously very sensitive to things the rest of us aren't: images of monkeys, the cost of barbie dolls, not getting their fast food orders 100% correct, etc...

I think they deserve special treatment to accomodate their easily-offendable sensibilities. We should probably send them to their own schools, where monkeys are never mentioned in biology class, and where the lunch ladies will double check the nugget count of all the trays. And maybe they can have different water fountains too, so they won't have to "wait in line for the white man" to take his drink. And they should probably set in the backs of busses like an upscale passenger instead of in the front like a chauffeur.

Just a thought.

2012-08-03 02:57:47 PM
Time for ye olde 90's anecdote, only vaguely related to what this discussion is about:

There was a Seinfeld episode where Jerry and Elaine (and maybe George) were at the airport and decided to pretend to be someone named O'Brien in order to use that person's limo, but it turned out that O'Brien was a powerful white surpemacist and the limo took them to a White Supremacy rally right at the end of the episode. the last line was something like "Screw you, O'Brien!" It went to a commercial break, and the first commercial up was for an O'Brien Hyundai Dealership (in our local area) with the name flashing in great big letters across our cathode ray tube. It was quite hilarious.

Thus ends this tedious and boring anecdote.

2012-08-03 02:58:09 PM
I don't think it had so much to do with Gabby as much as it did fading directly from a monkey doing rings to a black man in the exact same pose. There's no way that someone didn't say something between editing and airing that commercial. It was 100% intentional. They are looking for a little controversey to get the name of the show out there.

2012-08-03 02:58:23 PM
Sadly this overt and obviously well-planned provocation will be the catalyst for the Race War that NBC has been pushing for ever since Costas came onboard.

Actually, that midget Costas said that she was African-American -- which notable reduces the significance of her win from 1 in 16 (16 winners since 1952, 15 white) to 1 in 4 (four Americans have won, 3 European-American).

Well first of all, duh, that's what the denizens of the Internet do.

Second of all I bet there are just as many, if not more, denizens of the net egging them on and recommending they put the monkey in the Olympics and denigrating further into welfare/Obama/xenophobic trolling etc. Wade out into the sewage that is most news commenting and it doesn't take long. It HAS been pretty awful. The parade 'O athletes section alone was dreadful. They managed to imply that Kim Jung Il was kind of nuts while the NK team was marching past. He was, and we all know it, but this is not the time to bring it up. The drill is to comment on their star athlete and move on. They also brought up IDI AMIN during the Ugandans segment. The guy has been dead for 40 years and is a blight on mankind, buy why bring it up? There have been tons of things like this. Is it me or is it just getting worse.

I'm getting a kick out of this, because when Mr. Ouisch and I watched the women's gymnastics final and the medal ceremony and all that, and then the monkey commercial came on, I was all "whoah, there's gonna be some backlash for this!" And Mr. Ouisch was all "Why? This commercial has been on a dozen times or more." And I was like "Because it aired right after Bob Costas went on and on about an African-American winning the all-around gold." And Mr. Ouisch said "But that was a female gymnast, and the monkey was on the rings, which is a male event. Who would translate that into some racial slur against Gabby Douglas?" I replied "Trust me, I've lived in the Detroit area my entire life, and I remember a case back in the late 1980s when a local African-American news anchor made some off-hand remark about a blind date gone wrong he'd been on recently (it was germane to the story they were segue-ing out of), and the very next story was about a gorilla at the Detroit Zoo. A photo of said gorilla was projected in the background a few seconds too soon, while said anchor was still chatting about his blind date, and all heck broke loose in the local press the next day. It was soundly thrashed as a racist slur by some technician, etc etc."

tallguywithglasseson: A) If NBC showed footage of the white Olympians, and then said "and now we're going to show some footage of Gabby Douglas", and showed a monkey doing gymnastics, that would be racist

The definition hasn't changed; the USAGE has. Used to be, racism was used only to describe someone who deliberately hated someone else because of their skin color. Now it means any time someone can become offended by any random comment made in any connection whatsoever to a person of color.

As in: "Bill Maher talked about apes and then mentioned Michael Steele in the same article! RACISM!!!" Or as here, "NBC was airing ads for their new show and one of those ads (pre-scheduled on countless outlets for the past 6 months) ran on some stations right after Gabby was on TV! RACISM!!!!"

Are you farking retarded? They could show the Sopranos and splice it with Ragu and Super Mario brothers video game commercials and I wouldn't give a shiat. That cock stain Jimmy Fallon has a commercial right now where he's making fun of Italians by portraying a chef with a bad accent and making pizza. If he put in corn rows, spoke ebonics and was frying chicken there would be all sorts of outrage.

I'm sure you wouldn't.

Know your great-grandfather's name? Great. Do you know what he cost?

DjangoStonereaver: People should be more offended that a concept that wouldn't have flown on ADULT SWIM was greenlit by a major
broadcast network.

Adult Swim's audience has a higher IQ than NBC's. NBC's program directors know this.

Libbo McLibberton here.

They've aired that commercial so many times during the Olympics that even if it were intended to be a racist mockery of Gabrielle Douglas, it wouldn't work. The association just wouldn't form in most people's minds after seeing it in so many other contexts.

Plus, come on. Really? This isn't a tasteless, dog-whistling editorial cartoon about Obamfart's teleprompter.

You know what's awesome about being white and nonracist (I don't mean colorblind, I mean appreciative of what's great about black American culture, and comfortable being a racial minority among a group of black people)? When black people find out you're really and truly not a racist, they treat you REAL NICE, like you did something special. It's like when Obama won; black Americans were nearly as proud of white Americans who voted for him as they were of Obama.

/White privilege is the BEST, although in abstract I do not approve of it.

Give it time they will find a connection, something like the monkey's father was once in a circus and flung poo at some black folks and they got covered by a local TV station and that reporter now works for FOX. If someone want something to fit their template bad enough they will find a way to smach it in there.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Black people are obviously very sensitive to things the rest of us aren't: images of monkeys, the cost of barbie dolls, not getting their fast food orders 100% correct, etc...

How much do you want to bet that most of the people creating all the fuss are white though?

2012-08-03 09:47:00 PM

brap: It's more offensive that someone would make that sort of connection

I don't think just mentally making the connection is offensive; it just means one has heard racists make such comparisons, so it rang a bell. Particularly if a person is African American, and thus has actually had unpleasant experience with being on the receiving end of similar -- but deliberately racist --messages, I don't see that one can possibly fault such a person for just noticing the juxtaposition.

The gaffe wasn't deliberate, of course, but the timing was indeed pretty bad. I don't think there's much to be gained from people getting angry over it, but I couldn't blame anyone for being a bit stunned at the time.

/and anyway, good luck sorting out how many people are actually angry over this, or are just trolling on Twitter or wherever

2012-08-03 10:33:48 PM
The solution is simple and obvious: we must kill all monkeys so that no one ever gets offended in this manner ever again.

Not much. Same ones who are so angry that uninsured people will have to buy health insurance now, for instance.

Aside all of the flap about that monkey commercial, Gabby appeared awkward and unpolished by comparison to many of the other gymnasts. Her movements don't seem to "flow", she hesitates and rests longer than the others... I think that many others share the opinion that her gold medal was actually a nod to her race, simple as that. Europe seems to be where the USA was about 40 years ago by covering up their prejudice through handing out perks & awards.

The thing I find most hilarious about racism is I'm not even sure which one I am. Mother is Asian, father is white. I pass for white, although some people can tell I'm mixed. Most(Including me) probably rarely think about it.

I go with "human race", makes things less complicated.

Incidentally, monkeys are actually very light colored, not black or brown. The black or brown is their fur color. Their skin color is a lot closer to a caucasian. It's just like dogs, cats, or any other fuzzy animal.
