GreenSun: People evolved from monkeys/chimps right? Why be offended at all? Besides, it's not like they were teasing the girl about being a monkey despite her not looking like one for a few months and that's why the little ad was made.

People should stop trying to make trouble out of nothing.

Wrong. We have a common ancestor.

Some people are just looking for a reason to be offended.

2012-08-03 11:53:57 AM
Seriously? This stupid fng commercial has been blasting the airwaves all week.

2012-08-03 12:04:25 PM
That's nothing! After the medal ceremony NBC faded -- TO BLACK -- before going to the commercial!

You're surprised?

The definition of "racism" has changed so much in the last four years or so.

2012-08-03 12:16:40 PM
It's more offensive that someone would make that sort of connection in their head in the first place.

2012-08-03 12:32:43 PM
I'm offended that NBC is continuing it's long march to being a 5th rate network.

Animals in the Olympics would be great. In particular, I would like to see synchronized cat jumping.

I don't think the definition has changes as much as the interpretation of events. And it's been this way longer than we've had a black president.

I DNRTFA but I can imagine the promo was for that stupid animal hospital show with the little outbreak monkey. They've been pushing that abomination for months, of course they are going to run commercials for it during the Olympics.

2012-08-03 01:03:27 PM
That's stupid. For one thing, the monkey is wearing a men's gymnastics outfit.

/Also "Monkey Leotard" would be a good name for a band

2012-08-03 01:05:56 PM
There was no intended insult, obviously. It's not like the producers said "hey, NOW would be a great time for the first airing of this promo of a monkey doing gymnastics". It was simply a bunch of morons in the booth, none of whom had the grey matter or insight to say to the producer, "You know, maybe running the promo for the vet show should wait for a segment or two. We don't want to unintentionally offend people.".

Wait...would that be cats jumping over...people? Or things? Or people jumping over cats? This is important.

I'm thinking cats jumping off of couches at different heights. Maybe doing a couple flips on the way down and landing perfectly on their feet.

Cats jumping ONTO couches would be a lot better. Let's see some lithe, perfectly tanned human jump five times their body height while also doing seven flips.

2012-08-03 01:16:42 PM
Did they also play the GEICO commercial with Gallagher smashing watermelons?

-1.5 for tails not being in quite the same direction on the third flip.

Vincenzo and Professor Whiskers would never be allowed to compete due to their different tail lengths :(

I'm talking broadcast networks. They'd be neck & neck with Lifetime if we included cable.

what is this broadcast that you speak of?? And why did we give the networks digit airwaves rather than sell them to the top bidder??

A) If NBC showed footage of the white Olympians, and then said "and now we're going to show some footage of Gabby Douglas", and showed a monkey doing gymnastics, that would be racist

B) Airing a commercial for something called "Animal Practice" with a monkey doing gymnastics is not racist

This should be easy for everyone, but apparently there are some people who don't understand B), and there are people in this thread who don't seem understand A). If you want to be taken seriously at any time, you shouldn't then say stuff like "the definition of racism has changed a lot in the last 4 years". That just shows yourself as a dimwit that nobody should listen to.

2012-08-03 02:10:11 PM
Not only that, but I had heard that the monkey had just eaten Chick-fil-a.

I was referring to the simple notion that the cries of racism have reached "Boy who cried wolf" levels. There is racism out there. There are many racist people. But, by continually describing non-racist things as racist waters down the sharpness the word should have.

I was watching that last night and I was so happy for Gabby, and then right after that they had the little monkey on and I literally facepalmed... I just knew that someone, somewhere, was calling a lawyer.

I've come to the conclusion that there's nothing I can do that won't get me branded racist, sexist, classist, ableist, minsogynst, genderist, colonialist, etc, etc., so now all those words have completely lost all meaning to me.

They're only saying that because Gabby Douglas is black.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do will be used to prove you are racist. Your silence will also be taken to prove you're racist.
