I heard she was being trained for interdimensional travel.

I'm not sure which impreses me more: The fact that she can run that fast or the fact that it's only twice as fast as the world's fastest human.

loooove cheetahs!

Well they've been clocked in the 70s and they suspect they can probably do 80+ MPH.

And you can see she didn't even seem to be really bearing down.

So don't raise us up to cheetah-like speeds just yet.

22 feet per stride. My God, imagine that thing running at you and closing in that fast.

heh. never apologize for good, solid humor.

Just_a_Bear: loooove cheetahs!

me too. always have. all big cats in general, but cheetahs are just...badass.

It looked like she was matching the speed of the furry thing. I think they need a faster way to pull it and see if she really pushes to catch it instead of just pace it.

2012-08-03 12:54:30 PM
What do Cheetahs hunt? Small pigs and rabbits?

While fast, they don't look big enough to ever tangle with a lion or tiger and not enough dexterity to out pace a wolf.

I think if she pushed it, she could've gotten into the high 70's.

Think about that for a moment.

Imagine driving your CAR on the highway at a comfy 71mph and looking to the right, you see not a minivan complete with harried mother-of-three texting and driving, but Sarah the Cheetah.

freaking impressive. as NBSV mentioned she seemed to be matching the speed of the toy. i think she can go faster. ive always loved cheetahs.

mmmmmm cheetos

While they aren't selective about the food they eat, They need the speed for antelopes, which aren't usually that big. They routinely give up their catch to lions and hyenas, hiding what they can up in the sparse trees on the Serengeti plain. Humans also run down antelopes, though the method is to tire them out, not out speed them.

Hey! This was a world's record. There have been other attempts at other places, and this was the fastest, so far. The cat didn't look like it was pushing it, because the best in any endeavor are the most efficient in what they do. When they try to push beyond that, the motions look bigger, but don't do bigger.

This was a 'world's record' in the way America hosts the 'World Series' with nobody else playing. This is just the second or third time anybody bothered to play around and test a cheetah running a 100m.

Actually, they are pretty selective about what they eat because of how they hunt. It's a massive investment for them. That's the reason why they generally don't eat things they didn't kill themselves (at least out in the wild). They rarely if ever scavenge a corpse like other big cats will because they can't risk getting sick since they're such finely-tuned machines.

They're pretty incredible animals.

dopey article.
here's why:
100m/5.95s = 16.8 m/s = 0.0168 km/s = 60.48 kph = 37.6 mph. not really all that close to the 61 mph for the old record. maybe the old record was thrown out for doping.

/ i hate when journalists don't do their homework :-(

really? Think about what's wrong with your math.

FTFA: "a cheetah from the Cincinnati Zoo named Sarah covered 100 meters at 61 mph (98 kph)."

There's no mention of top speed unless you watched the video, so it's still crappy journalism.

@danny, yes! beautiful animal, amazing achievement; bad journalism. to be fair, it is most likely a case of poor editing.

Big deal - a common house cat with a top speed of 48km/h can outrun Usain Bolt in the 100m dash.
