(Lip Magazine)   You may think that Fifty Shades of Grey is just a book about kinky sex. But it's really about control and romanticized abuse. Take the sex out of it, and Christian Grey is just a controlling boyfriend. Or with the sex in it   (lipmag.com) divider line 132

To everyone who is so ill-read that they consider Twilight and its associated fan-fic 'literature', yes.

Better report this to the Give-a-F*ck Police.

News to me, I haven't paid attention to this thingy... now I'm very glad I haven't.
If the list she goes down is true as far as the book goes, and tons of women / teenagers are reading this... Christ. No wonder regarding all the DV stats. Maybe it sounds like fun until you actually find yourself in that situation? WTF?

I saw someone reading this in the departure lounge of an airport the other day. Had to suppress urge to not just laugh out loud literally. We get it, you're over 40 with diminishing hopes of romance. But advertising it this blatantly seems a bit desperate.

Ordinarily I would never refuse to read a book because of what other people say about it, because I may end up liking it. However in the case of 50 Shades of Grey and it's two sequels....I wouldn't touch either of those three books with a 10 ft. pole.

2012-08-03 11:15:32 AM
I read all three.

And coming from someone who loves Twightlight, is quite into kink BDSM-inspired fun, and has read some trash in the past, those books are horribly written crap.

I only read all three thinking the good parts everyone was talking about must me in the next chapter...or the next.

I was NOT tittalated. I was quite pissed, actually.

The women getting hot over this series has never read well written porn for women, apparently.

Well, this comment saved me some time.

Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but I feel like this book borrows quite heavily from its source material in the 'abusive relationship' aspect.

Being, as it is, Twilight fanfiction - just heavily sexualised and poorly written/disguised Twilight fanfiction - the relationship itself is more obviously abusive, but the same signs are there in the Edward/Bella relationship in the original novel. First teenage girls were taught that it's okay for a cute guy to watch you while you're sleeping (!!) and push you around, and now adult women are being taught that as long as the sex is enjoyable, your partner can control your behaviour/terrify you, but as long as you looooooove them the relationship is the best!!1!

It's terrifying to think that there's a substantial percentage of the population (possibly of both genders!) who now have this disturbingly skewed perspective of what is and isn't acceptable within a romantic/sexual relationship.

TL:DR; both Fifty Shades and Twilight are really terrible books not just in terms of writing skill but also content why do they sell so much WHY WHY

I recommended the Sleeping Beauty series to several of my co-workers who were all enthralled with 50 Shades. I think they're now all afraid to ask me for book recommendations.

I tried reading 50 Shades, but I just can't read poorly written dreck. My dreck must be well written for me to enjoy it.

A friend mentioned wanting to read this series, I gave her Story of O and the Sleeping Beauty series. Smut, in my opinion, should be as well written as anything else.

Yeah, but they're just trying to relate to other people by reading what everyone else is reading. If all their friends read Vonnegutt then they probably would too. It's not really a matter of taste.

I've read only excerpts but my inital reaction to them was that I read FAR better amatuer erotica on the old "Alt" forums on Usenet, and that was followed by jealousy realizing A) this woman was making a metric asston of mone of this crap and that id PERSONALLY written far better pieces of erotica on the old Usenet forums.

Ask the moms into Twilight if they'd like a much much older man than their teenage daughter trying to pick her up in high school and see how romantic that is. I mean really. You're decades older and you are hanging around high school? The creepy factor goes to 11.

Maybe I was reading too much into it.

I went to Disneyland California Adventures to go to the new cars land. This one pregnant lady about 7 to 8 months was standing in line behind us for about 2 hours. My wife and I was trying to get a peek at the title and we kinda figured out it was a 50 shades book. She was doing her best to keep the cover all hidden up. Well she gets closer to the front and her husband and crotch fruit come cutting into line with her. Her husband grabs all the stuff she has and first thing he does is hold out the book for everyone to see, while this lady took 2 and half hours of folding over the cover and when she wasn't reading covering it with her jacket.

Made my wife and I laugh. Wife is slightly curious to read it but refuses to buy it and there are over two hundred holds on it at the library that have over 40 copies.

P.S. Do not go to the Lightning McQueen racing ride in cars land for about 7 months, place is crowded as hell. Got there at 8:30 in the morning and didn't ride our first ride until 11:15 ish. Fast passes were already out by the time we got there. The park opens at 8 am.

The use of either eliminates two of the books. That can only mean that the third one is still an option. So which one did you read?

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!

Anne Rice is a better writer to be sure, but she knows no more about real BDSM than the 50 Shades Lady. Ditch the bad fan-fic and read "Screw the Roses send me the Thorns" instead and then find a local "munch" where you can meet local enthusiasts in a bright well lit place and get to know them and maybe get an invite to a party or two.

My favorite one so far:

"It was bliss having his cumtree probed inside me again; stuffing my enchilada of love with 10 inch purple battery-operated monster just didn't get my gammon alley splurging like it used to. After having my gashtray slammed, he then proceeded to hammer my turd cutter. The unrelenting orgasms from his cervix cigar pounding my wizards sleeve made me come so hard, I began sweating like a blind lesbian in a fish shop. My ladytown was trembling like Micheal J. Fox licking a car battery. Now, I've seen more helmets than Hitler, but the sight of his disco stick made my spaff seep like a George Foreman grill."

Can't remember what thread I was on but someone said, "If the guy made $20,000 a year and lived in a studio apartment there's no way this novel would have taken off. If this were the case, the character would have been locked away for sexual assault or rape a long time ago..."

Take the sex out of any relationship, and suddenly it's all farked up and makes no sense.

2012-08-03 12:50:40 PM
Girls do not mind a controlling boyfriend/husband when you are attractive, a good lay and keep most of your controlling nature to the bedroom. If you are a fat, impotent couch potato demanding your wife bring you more beers, then not so much.

2012-08-03 12:54:43 PM
I've started work on my own porn novel for women. No title yet, but there is no actual romance, it's a BDSM story where a man uses certain websites to buy a willing slave and owns her for two years. There will be rape, abuse, him pissing on her, orgies, gang bangs and she's going to love most of it. She'll even be involved in the preperation of new slaves as the slave mother. Eventually she'll be sold to a new master.

In the movie that will be made, I'm thinking either Kristen Stewart or Kat Denning. Kat because who wouldn't want to see her naked and having rough sex? Kristen, because who wouldn't pay money to see people piss all over her?

Take the sex out of it and it's something different than what it is. Take the abuse out of it and it's just a silly romance novel.

Yep. This2. Those are exactly the books I'd reccomend to someone wanted to read "50 Shades." "50 Shades" is a defanged Twilight, which itself is just an extremely watered-down version of Anne Rice's Vampire books, speaking of Rice.

And, to someone wanting to read Dan Brown, I'd probably reccomend In The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl might work for that reader, too,

I prefer the story portion of BDSM library - they tend to do a better job of making them searchable.

As for abuse... if I ever make my wife truly afraid of me, or if she is ever afraid of bringing something up... I hope she leaves me. Hopefully with warning, mind. If she's afraid I'll injure her accidentally, she needs to speak up (and has).
