Kurohone: According to the threads about the Chinese swimmer, breaking the WR means you must be doping.

Not if you're swimming with the stars and stripes Jesus eagle on your side.

12349876: he's doing the medley relay tomorrow in all likelihood. didn't do the heat for it which is why you aren't seeing him. i don't think any of the heat guys in the medley relay are going to do the final.

Which is another reason why medal count is horsesh*t. Everyone else qualifies you for the final in events, then you just go win the final. Yeah, that's totally legit.

desertgeek: I don't like the American going out so fast early.

She can actually stay pretty close to that pace, believe it or not.

2012-08-03 02:55:12 PM
She has to get tired, surely. Then again, Adlington did this in 2008 and kept it up all the way.

WhyteRaven74: Kurohone: According to the threads about the Chinese swimmer, breaking the WR means you must be doping.

No, no it doesn't.

Agreed, I'm just awaiting the thunderous silence on this matter from all of the 'Chinese swimmers are teh d0pzorz!' posters.

Kurohone: WhyteRaven74: Siamese Bream: Missy Franklin may have a silly name, but she's spanking this race.

Daaamn, that wasn't even close

According to the threads about the Chinese swimmer, breaking the WR means you must be doping.

Oh god, not this shiat again.

Honestly, the only thing giving me reason to be suspicious is that final 50m where she was faster than Lochte was on his swim. Fact is that a woman isn't likely to be able to do that naturally. But I'm not going nuts over it like some people.

2012-08-03 02:56:34 PM
Oh, she'll get tired, just not at the same rate as everyone else. She's good. I'm surprised Adlington isn't make it more competitive, though.

2012-08-03 02:56:47 PM
Nice free kick goal by Christine Sinclair. The good guys up on the Brits 2 - 0.

Hmm, and Adlington isn't from the US, so presumably she was doping last time around then?

2012-08-03 02:57:24 PM
...And Adlington slips to third, 3.47 seconds back. Dang.

Well, you're right. Another gold for the USA. Hell of a job, Ledecky.

Thanks. He's not listed on the medley relay team, hence my confusion. Hope he does swim.

Women regularly swim faster than the top men in the world, especially toward the end of an event. And China doesn't have any history of top athletes doping or anything. Accusing the Chinese of cheating is just ridiculous.

So were a lot of the other men in his heat. He just didn't do a particularly spectacular last 50.

Was kinda rooting for Adlington (bit of an anglophile Yank), happy for Ledecky though.

xria: Hmm, and Adlington isn't from the US, so presumably she was doping last time around then?

Like a fiend. She had more needles poked into her than an in-flight meal on Air Canada.

2012-08-03 03:01:22 PM
HELL of a good swim, just a shame she only had 15 lengths of WR speed.

Take away his relay medals, and he still has 12 medals.

Well he's arguably the fastest butterflyer in the world at that distance, so...probably.

Gee, I thought teenage girls couldn't challenge world record times.

Hmmmm. Must be doping!

Cultural face-off needed. Yanks Vs Brits in the pool, ON BIKES!

midpoint: Brompton = best folder. Not cheap and there is a 14 week waiting list though...
If you work for the state check out Cyclescheme to get one tax-free.

Well, as I'm in the US, they may frown on the tax free bit ;)

/and shipping may take a lil longer too

yeah, I'm just gonna go start drinking now....

2012-08-03 03:03:06 PM
If there were no swimming events, the USA would have a total of only seven gold medals. That's a pretty dominant week in the pool, I'd say.

2012-08-03 03:03:30 PM
Wow, she kept that pace up the entire race. That is grueling. I bet she could have made a push to break the WR if anyone had been near her in the pool.

H'actually you'd probably save VAT of 17.5%. Plenty of US dealers.

IAmRight: Which is another reason why medal count is horsesh*t. Everyone else qualifies you for the final in events, then you just go win the final. Yeah, that's totally legit.

That is kind of weak. I mean the medley relay is sort of a horseshiat event to begin with but the fact you can swim in the finals without qualifying is borderline horseshiat if you ask me.

2012-08-03 03:07:14 PM
actually watching the long jump prelims is going to drive me to drink real soon.

WhyteRaven74: Take away his relay medals, and he still has 12 medals.

Which suddenly isn't the most. C'mon, it's pretty damn ridiculous to be able to completely use a different team for the final of any event.

Then again, maybe I can go in and sub out for Roger Federer now that he's made the final and I can celebrate my silver medal. Maybe 12 of us Farkers can go sub in for the US basketball squad in the final and celebrate our silver medal!

IAmRight: it's pretty damn ridiculous to be able to completely use a different team for the final of any event.

No it's not. Just means a team is really deep.

WhyteRaven74: No it's not. Just means a team is really deep.

No, it's idiotic.

You qualify for a final, you should get to race the final. Not have four other people replace you and then get all the glory.

2012-08-03 03:10:49 PM
Siamese Bream: These women have 800 m to do and they're going faster than I could swim 25 m.

I wouldn't feel too bad. Top Kenyan athletes run the marathon at something like a 4:50 pace or faster. Running a sub 5 minute mile is pretty difficult in itself. My fastest time ever on a 400m track was at about a 5:30 pace and that was almost an all out sprint. Of course it's a totally different race than the 800m swim but it's also way longer.

2012-08-03 03:10:56 PM
Siamese Bream: Not if you're swimming with the stars and stripes Jesus eagle on your side.

I don't know about all that but that whole thing was completely blown out of proportion. They talk about her like she got plucked off the farm last week despite the fact she won a gold at the last world championships - not exactly coming out of nowhere. And to hear people talk she's shattering all the Phelps' best times when the truth is her 'swimming faster than Lochte' was actually doing the same race in 23 seconds slower than lochte. But you can't get in the way of a good bashing the chinese girl once they have it set in their minds she definitely must be juicing.

Agreed. The guys who are racing in the final are better than the people who qualify for it, anyway. They could've qualified easily on their own - but why waste the energy?

IAmRight: Not have four other people replace you and then get all the glory.

generally not all four people are replaced. The same thing is done in track, though in track everyone who ran the relay, even if they don't run in the final gets a medal if the team medals.

That analogy is terrible. Are you better than Federer? Are any of us better than any of the guys on the Dream Team?

Speaking of team medals, that would be really awesome if for example you had some average Joe 'win' a chance to play with the USA basketball team. He'd get a gold medal for winning, even if he never played. :)

Of course that's about as stupid as giving out participation awards to all the losers.

2012-08-03 03:14:24 PM
And on the opposite end of the distance thing- the 50m freestyle

That's his schtick. IAR's self-appointed role is to assume a contrarian position, and defend it in the face of all facts and logic, unto the death.

Just assume that whatever he says is the opposite of factual, and go on about your day.

That's something else that blows my mind. Considering what a big thing it was when Roger Bannister went under four minutes for just one mile, and they're not far off that for TWO HOURS.

It's a team thing. What glory will the guys being replaced get when they compete and come in 6th place? I'd rather be a part of a team that won gold and say I contributed than say "Yeah, I swam in an Olympic final (and didn't medal)".

2012-08-03 03:16:11 PM
El Uno Magnifico: That analogy is terrible. Are you better than Federer? Are any of us better than any of the guys on the Dream Team?

Oh, so if you're better than other people from your country, then qualifying for a final is beneath you and you only have to show up at the end, fully rested and ready for glory.
