Considering Skrillex has only two listenable songs, I'm pretty happy that Tiesto makes more than him. It's pretty depressing that Deadmau5 and Pauly D are on the list at all, though. Those two are people who should be paying me for having listened to their music. And even though Basshunter really only has one song in different keys and tempos, he should be #3 or at least, after David Guetta, compared to the rest of these hacks.

No offense, bra, but I like dubstep / electronic music and the fact is that it is infinitely easier to create and almost nonsensical to "play" live -- it's just a sound file that you modulate. It's like having a rock band version of your song ready to go and you can flip the tone switch and play around with it a bit.

I paid way too much to see Deadmau5 (it was a shady show and the promoter ripped a lot of people off) and it was one of the worst "shows" of my life. Once again, I like Deadmau5, most electronic music, and most music in general.

A guy standing on a podium wiggling his fingers on a pitch shift and wub-wubing live is just boring as hell, mask or not. Basically I could have Youtube'd it.

You can in no way compare the energy and skill level of a musician who plays "electrified metal strings" to this. It's just a foolish comparison. IMO the art itself may be subjectively equal, the product, but the skill level required to enter the genre and the skill level required to "play it live" are not even remotely the same as, say, a rock or a metal band.

No they are dancing, eating molly and rolling on tabs of x. Maybe they are enjoying a flavorful vodak and Red Bull or a warm PBR. There will also be glow sticks, men wearing hats and expensive laser toys. I'm glad these kids are spending their money on these DJ's. Otherwise they would be buying spice, Chick-Fil-a or getting another tattoo that will only diminish their employment chances at Walmart. I also believe clenched fist pumping and hippy wiggle dancing are also acceptable. Let them enjoy their youth, the lifespan of a 'musician' these days is about 2 years. Three years if you are cute. If you tell them how much you like their guages, they will do an extra good job when they cut your hair or make your martini. If it weren't for DJing, Macaulay Culkin could not even afford his heroin.

The whole DJ thing is pretty big here in Europe, I went to one of those shows and could not understand what the appeal was. It was just a guy dancing behind a table with electronics, and lasers shooting around him. Maybe I'm getting old, but I honestly....thought that if they were playing the same thing on a cd player it wouldn't have made much of a difference. I probably just don't get "it".

For fark's sake, the dude was spinnning-records around in his hands, while the music was playing.

Is Deadmau5 considered too mainstream? I'm wondering because as someone who's only liked the occasional song from different electronic artists, Deadmau5 is one whose work I like fairly consistently. I like his chiller trance songs like strobe, his more dub step-esqe songs like Aural psynapse and his uptempo songs like ghosts n' stuff.

I think I've heard of some of tiesto stuff here and there. Seems alright. Yet to hear anything I like from skillrex.

Track down the British series Faking It, where they took people from one job and tried to get them to do another job to the level where they could fake the other job to experts in a few weeks.

The most successful one? The cellist becoming a DJ. Not one of the judges guessed that she wasn't a professional.

Bingo.

It happens to everyone. You can't keep emotionally bonding to every pop fad that comes along.

My only problem with a lot of the DJ's today is not the technology they use, but how that technology is used as a crutch. I'll always prefer vinyl to laptops, but there is something troubling about how absolutely dependent many people are on software telling them things like what the BPM of a track is. A lot of those people don't even have the ear to mix properly, but use technology to mask that fact.

Old men pissed because people younger than them figured out how to make millions at something you just KNOW takes no talent, even though you couldn't do it yourself.

Also apparently couldn't be farked to read the first page, where it says "in the last 12 months" in plain English, which would explain why the only electronic music most of you have heard of isn't on the list. Too funny for a Friday.

How about you listen to what you like, I'll listen to what I like, and we'll all agree that musical tastes are subjective. I like guitar based music, I like electronic music, I like rap. I like big name bands and I like indie weirdness. Haters feel free to hate.

Of course, I did just buy this shirt. I plan to wear it with pride.

Bullshiat. If it's so easy to make, make some. The tools to do so are available for free on numerous torrent sites. Give it a go. Let me know when you make something listenable. That is, if the people you live with don't shoot you first.

I am a big fan of electronic music, including many DJ's. However, I normally skip the "live shows". The energy is just not there 80% of the time (seen plenty of DJ's live)

However, in album form, some of these guys are really brilliant at producing good music.

Some of my favorite bands right now are those that have a DJ integrated with the rest of the (instrument playing) band on stage (aka livetronica). It's the perfect hybrid.

Alone, a DJ on stage feels kinda like watching a dude masturbate.
