Hi, long-time listener, first time caller. You guys always give good advice. Doing a long distance move at the end of the month (Illinois to Texas) and decided to take my little kitty friend via automobile. I already called my vet and they are providing a sedative to calm her down. She gets extra panicky in cars. I'm taking food and water, of course, and one of those small disposable litter boxes. Is there anything else I can do? She's about 10 years old and in good health, if it makes any difference. Thank you! (on mobile so I owe you 1 cat picture)

Sorry to hear that! Suzy will get spoiled quickly! Butter and Dusty LOVE having CooperDaKat home all the time and I'm not sure they would be able to handle it if he went back to a 9-5 job.

For JohnBuck41 & Mrs, today's Mutts strip. Committing yet one more copy-wrong, ha!
Also tnx for confirming that snake seen 2 wks ago on front sidewalk was (still is) a garter snake. 'S what I thought.

That is sooooo cool! Thanks. We've had great wx (for the most part) and a nice mix of long-distance trips (one to my sisters 90 minutes away) and several local trips (twice to camp and once to the local casino----yes, we have one in Eastern Maine), a big waterfront festival last weekend here in our little burg, a 30th anniversary party for close friends, and one day just for loafing around the house, replanting wild rose bushes/laundry/hanging out.

When my previous cats were kittens we took them with us on vacation from California to Oregon. We did two things that seemed to help: 1) got them a puppy/dog crate and put food, water and litter inside so they could do what was needed when they needed to and 2) got them used to harness and leash, then took them out at rest stops so they could explore and get away from being inside the car. It seemed to work well and we only had a problem when we entered Portland during rush hour traffic.

Over a year ago I had to relocate my cat that was with my ex-wife (and perfectly happy) to my place in the panhandle- she lived outside Orlando. So my kitty "Maki Tuna Roll" comes to live with me. Being an outdoor kitty I was cautious to not let her out for about two weeks after her arrival. I finally let her out to explore the woods behind my house confidant she could find her way back. i never saw her again. Until just last week.

You see I manage a photo lab. And one day last week this neurotic lady customer of mine came in with a memory card with about 800 images on it. I was tasked with finding a particular image on this card to do an enlargement for her. So while I am looking through her images I come across this photo above. THIS IS "MAKI TUNA ROLL!!!!" I know for certain. Without a doubt. I mean look how distinct her coat is! So I am absolutely beside myself on waiting for this customer to come back in so I can ask her just how in the world she ended up with a photo of my lost cat on her memory card. Now remember this lady is a bit if a nut and probably a bit bi-polar. She comes in and I tell her story of my missing cat and tell her that I am certain this is her. She told me that this cat belonged to a friend of hers who happens to have a dozen or so other cats. That right. My cat was abducted by a crazy cat lady hoarder! I tell schizo lady to put me in contact with hoarder lady because I want my damn cat back. So a few days later schizo lady comes back and tells me that Hoarder lady swears she has had that cat for ten years and this couldn't be my cat. I know this is Maki DAMMIT! So now schizo lady won't give me any more info on hoarder lady because hoarder lady is in collusion with schizo lady. I would be content on having her keep Maki if she is clearly happy and being taken care of. But for her to deny that this cat can't be a stray she picked up about a year ago.... I am farking pissed! What do I do?

that baby black leopard is about the size of Magic, the largest domesticated feline I've ever seen in real life. There's a picture of him wearing a christmas costume that probably would have fit a good sized toddler. The only shame was there isn't anything in the picture to show scale. He was amazing. I could put my hand (I wear extra large gloves) between his ears on his head, and not be touching them.

Thank goodness for Caturday. I need help to keep my sanity(insanity)
Yesterday I rode in a car with my sister driving for 4 hours with country music the whole way.Not my favorite music. Got to the motel which is under new management from when I made reservations and it is now no smoking and undergoing renovations. There were blood stains on the carpet so we got a new room.So if I want a cigarette I get to stand outside the front door looking like a hooker on a Saturday night.
This afternoon I'm going to a family reunion of my great grandmother's family so I will be meeting all new people and that should be a good time. My Jack and Gremie are stuck at the kennel until I pick them up on Monday morning. When I pick those two up things will be interesting when they get home. Jack will be happy to see me and Gremie probably won't talk to me for months.

I've moved/traveled across country with a couple of different cats. You have everything you need right there. I will recommend that you do NOT open your car door unless she is in her carrier, secured. You dont' want her to get out (that almost happened to me). You will be surprised, the happy pill will calm her and she will most likely just prefer to sit in her carrier. She will be fine with no food or water during the drive. you can give her a little but she probably won't be interested in her happy place.

also, anytime you stop for food/rest area, do everything FAST. You don't want her to be in the car in the heat. I'd be wary of taking her out of the car at rest areas. Strange things/sounds and one slip of the harness and she is gone.

Good luck on the move, you will do fine. I've driven from Florida to Nebraska and back a few times with a cat or a cat and a dog in the car with me. It is so nice to have company on the drive

I've done the long distance twice with my two cats (Ohio to New Mexico, New Mexico to Oregon - both roughly a 24 hr car trip). I don't stop very often, but I stopped mid-day and let them stretch out of the carrier, offered them litter and food and water. Normally I've found they're too nervous to eat in the car, so even food in the carrier isn't much help. Doesn't hurt to offer it of course. Normally they'll cry and freak for the first 30 minutes and then realize that there's nothing they can do about it, and just settle down and suffer.

Here's Ivan in his carrier. On the drive from Ohio to New Mexico, I let him wander around the car and he slept on a body pillow stashed in the back seat. He was a happy cat that time

Oh my gosh! And if you let them out of their carrier, make sure the windows are LOCKED! Ivan was out of his carrier and around morning rush hour he decided to step on the down button for the passenger side window. I thought I was going to lose him out the window at 60 mph!
