(MacRumors)   Apple is researching ways to give their Smart Cover, which protects the iPad display, the ability to, um, display stuff. Presumably so they can later sell Smart Covers for their Smart Covers   (macrumors.com) divider line 49

My iPad cover seems to have a weak magnet. It's a leather one, so that might be part of the problem.

I sent my secretary back to get another cover, but the new one was just as bad.

I'm getting a bit frustrated with Apple's declining product quality. But I'm just one guy.

Apple shows how secondary displays integrated into the Smart Cover could offer a mini home screen alongside the primary screen or be used to display information to others while folded into its stand configuration.

Which is important so that hipsters can make sure everyone knows what they are listening to while sitting in Starbucks drinking their lattes even when they're wearing earbuds.

More accurate claims would be "Laptops with MS Sideshow devices" or "Clamshell phones with external status display". I'd argue that each individual part of this has prior art, but hasn't been brought together for this exact purpose before, as such it would be novel

Because stuff exists, displays exists, devices exist, and outsides exist. It's the easiest 35 USC 103 rejection ever.

Yes well it might taste like a Hot Pocket but does it taste like a Hot Pocket in a Hot Pocket? That's the question! When I bite in to my Hot Pocket Extreme I need to know I'm getting that true Hot Pocket in Hot Pocket flavour and experience.

Oh, I'd agree that Sideshow is probably the closest prior art to this, but as you note, it wouldn't fully disclose Apple's invention. It would be a good start, but you'd need more. One problem is that the other bit of closest prior art - the iPad smart cover - was first revealed in March 2011, and this claims priority back to January 11, 2011 and to a provisional they filed pre-release. So you'd have to go elsewhere for some of the attachment and foldable features.

They're going after their core demographic - people who define themselves by what they consume. The primary purpose of this is to broadcast to the other folks at the coffee shop just how hip your tastes in media are.

An accessory device that is arranged to communicate with a host device by way of a communication channel is claimed.

No Apple, be more vague. I farking dare you. But, this, unlike most of Apple's recent hijinks is actually non-obvious and novel. It's really really stupid, but it's unique.

When flap screen 504 is configured below keyboard 502 it could act as a replacement for a touch pad...

Nope, they've got you covered with a goofy pseudo-mouse with minimal tactile feedback... above the keyboard. So you can rest your wrists on the keys...

Respectfully, I think you're reading that wrong.

In fact, here's the whole quote:
When configured above keyboard 502 flap screen 504 could allow for customized virtual keys to be added specific to each application, or could be used as a way to display additional application data. Flap screen 504 could also be configured with application toolbars, or even an active application list for easily switching between active applications. When flap screen 504 is configured below keyboard 502 it could act as a replacement for a touch pad, bringing the experience even closer to a conventional laptop configuration

And referring to your figure there:
Even more functionality can be added to flap portion 420 by configuring it with flap screen 504, positioned either above (as shown in FIG. 5) or below keyboard 502.

So, no, you're not resting your wrists on the keys when it's acting as a touchpad.

I read it again afterward, but didn't feel like correcting myself. Besides, the post I was replying to had it in FIG. 5's configuration.
