The Tea Party and Bible Pounders will be the downfall of the republican party. When you allow the extreme fringes to embrace ignorance with an end result that is counter to fiscal conservatism and small government in order to appease their narrow world views you end up with a ship sailing alee and a liberal elitist empty suit like Romney at the wheel.

I realize they don't understand, but Senator McCain tried this in the 2008. In other words, "A Texan, won a conservative primary, for being very conservative .... is it a day that ends in 'Y'?"

Pretty much this right here.

We're living in the age of the 'Almost Gilded'. Back in the 30s and 40s, we were in the midst of recovering from the results of unregulated capitalism run amok, and we had the threat of communism there to force the plutocrats into compromising and throwing a bone or two to the working classes of America.

Since then, they had the Communists to worry about, a reason for them to not push the workers too hard or too far, lest they start listening to the Communists about how bad capitalism was/is.

Once the threat of global communism went away in the 90s, however, we saw them slowly creeping back to their former stances.

Nibbling at the edges of long-earned rights and benefits like Child Labor laws and worker protections and union organizing.

I maintain that it was the threat of communism that kept them going full retard and regressive on the country and now that communism, as a real threat, is gone, they're doing their best to drag us back to the days of company scrip and dormitories. An outright plutocratic society where the rich are the only ones who matter.

He went as far right as we're going to see in order to win the Republican nomination. He had to.

Having waded through that crazy, he can sit back and count on the votes of those nuts, just like Obama can put a notch in the black-vote win column.

When it comes to getting them motivated enough to vote, all you need to say is Fartbongo!

2012-08-02 11:45:02 AM
For decades the right wing fringe groups have understood that the Republican candidates, in order to be successfully elected, need to appeal more generally to the moderates in the party, and have been satisfied with the more subtle nods from the candidate that their agenda will be considered.

The teatards, OTOH, expect to be catered to lock, stock and barrel or they'll take their ball home and cry into their pillows. These morans are tearing the GOP apart and I must admit it has been fascinating to observe. The Republican party has awakened a sleeping giant, and it has gone full retard.

Lost Thought 00: Republicans are pretty much guaranteed to take the majority in the Senate

Most recent Nate Silver prognostication puts that "closer to a tossup." The situation is ripe for it, but I'm not sure we can call that "guaranteed" yet. Hell, the Republicans should've taken it last time but thanks to the "I'm not a witch" lady and Mrs. Chickens-For-Healthcare out in Nevada they managed to pluck defeat from the jaws of victory. I don't think they've got any less crazy since then, but I could be wrong.

The tea party is just a group of misdirected baby boomers and elderly folks who can't see the problems facing the country are caused by them.

They are merely beating out established GOP candidates in the reddest of the red districts and view this wrongfully view this as encouragement. Most voters will stay with party lines regardless of what is going on but the ones who decide elections are fairly moderate and only lean slightly left/right. The Obama/healthcare is evil tactic didn't work on most of these folks and the Tea Party who ran on a platform of economic reform during the mid-term elections have proven themselves to care more about penis-goes-where legislation than economic reform. Furthermore, the narrative of impending economic doom has been stifled by actual economic recovery which hurts their chances even more.

While small government is a great ideal we have seen nothing from the GOP that shrinks government. Instead we have seen them focused on preserving tax breaks for the rich at the expense of social services, penis-goes-where legislation that expands government into the bedroom, and hypocritically defending pork-barrel DoD spending in an attempt to maintain two wars which we are slowly backing out of. The worse part about the DoD spending is that it is not about taking care of our troops, which not to long ago was the GOP mantra, but it is about taking care of non-competitive contracts to private businesses where there is more excess and waste than any other line item in our annual budget. This has served to show people that the Tea Party and GOP are not in fact concerned about fiscal conservatism, but are simply trying to use tax dollars to get rich and maintain power.

Contrary to Tea Party delusions, most people who consistently vote republican are quite charitable people and know that there is a need for a social safety net. They would prefer that they choose what charities to support rather than the federal government; however, they also realize that education first and foremost in addition to a welfare program that provides opportunity for economic achievement in lieu of entitlement is necessary.

Only because the extreme fringes of your lunatic associates wouldn't allow it. Dole was up against a fairly popular Clinton, and McCain was doomed by a ridiculous VP choice. And both had that cranky old man vibe to them.

The GOP's only hope is to embrace moderation. If we got rid of you too, that's just a bonus.

Look at the seats up for grabs in the next two senate cycles - moderation isn't likely to help as much as rallying the base in the seats they're trying to win. They're trying to kick out sitting D's in purple or lean red states that won in the moderately anti-bush 2006 election and the 2008 Obama wave. They need to rally the base in '12 to win the red states and same in '14 to have a hope at kicking out moderate D's in swing states.

However, you'll probably see a strong shift to the center in 2016. It'll be lead by demographic changes, the presidential race, and the shift to defense of purple/lean blue seats from the 2010 election.

Nate thinks the Democrats will hold the Senate? That's kind of a shock.

I personally think Missouri is likely to flip, despite the polling numbers; it's heavily infested with Tea Party types and has been trending conservative. Probably also Montana and North Dakota, as they're both traditionally conservative states. The GOP only needs one of the remaining three for their majority - pretty good odds - and the remaining three aren't exactly known for voting Democrat recently.

Not quite, just closer than Lost Thought seemed to be implying. I'd like to see the reasoning behind the flip though. I don't really doubt it, I just like to hear as many differing opinions as I can. Precisely my thoughts. I think many consider Montana a toss-up because it historically elects Democratic Senators despite being a solid red state; there have only been two Republicans elected to the Senate from Montana since 1913.

The Libertarian Party's got itself a big fat opportunity this year. Will it capitalize? Doubt it. Success would mean it would have to actually run things rather than hanging out on the sidelines smoking pot, cleaning its chic German pistols and confabbing about how lame everybody is.

Dog Welder: But also keep in mind the GOP is likely losing Olympia Snowe's seat to Angus King (technically, an Independent, but he's a liberal libby-lib) and Indiana could very well flip to Democrat because the Tea Partier there (Mourdock?) has already gone full retard.

And let's not forget MA likely flipping from R to D, as Scotty Pickup loses to Warren.

Especially if Lugar endorses the Democrat.

God Is My Co-Pirate:

It's confounding
The Tea Party's bleating
Madness...takes the polls
But listen closely,

(just for four months longer)

I've got to vote this fall.

In November, watching the speeches,
Drinking those moments when
The derpness will Mitt me
And the tards will be calling,

Why'd they vote Obama again?
Why'd they vote Obama again?

palelizard:

It's so frothy,
oh my pistols free me
So don't tread on me, no not at all
Useless legislation, with heuristic intention
Private funded, I see all
Mit's a bit of a flop flip
Obama's in the time slip
Hawaii will never be a state
We want no free abortions,
Away with your tubal ligations

Why'd they vote Obama again?
Why'd they vote Obama again?

SuperTramp

Well I was walking down the street
On the way to the polls
When a Tea Party guy tried to
steal my soul.
He shook-a me up, he took me by the arm.
He had a pickup truck, and a
medicare card.
He stared at me and I felt disgust.
Repubs mean nothing, its' Obama or bust!

It's just a vote for the left...
And then some derp from the riiiiight.
Freepers with their hands on their hips,
and hipsters holding iPhones tight.
And then a pelvic thrust,
from grannies in motor cha-ai-ai-airs.

Why'd they vote Obama again?
Why'd they vote Obama again?

Traditional Conservative:
It was great when it all began
I was a regular Romney fan
But it was over when he had the plan
To increase taxes on the average man.
Now the only thing that gives me hope
Is my hatred of a Presi-dope
Rose tints my world, keeps me safe from remembering McCain.

Tea Partier:
I'm just twenty seven months old
Truly terrifying to behold
And somebody should be told
My insanity hasn't been controlled
Now the only thing I've come to trust
Is Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin lust
Rose tints my world, keeps me safe from remembering McCain.

Corporate Republican:
It's beyond me
Help me, Romney
I'll be good, you'll see
Just take Pelosi away.
What's this, let's see.
Ooh, I feel derpy
What's come over me?
Here Rush comes again

Romney:
I feel released
Primary's complete
My flip flopping has increased
The nomination's here
Campaign finance has been disbanded
My Super Pac expanded
It's a gas that Ron Paul's landed
His nuts are so sincere

tudorgurl: I was feeling shut in.
Couldn't win.
I'd never ever voted before-ore-ore

(you mean she?
uh-huh)

I thought there's no use getting
Into heavy politicking
I have an agenda to push
I need some grass roots

Derpa-Derpa-Derpa Derp me!
I hate O-baa-baa-baa-aamy!
Thrill Me Chill Me Fulfill me!
Creature of the Right!

(still working, but here's the start!)

In Romney's voice:

I was such a shoe-in,
Bound to win.
I'd never had to campaign befor-or-ore.

They thought there's no use vetting
Or even checking
It only leads to Palin
And the other cretin...

Now all I want to know
Is where to go
The press tasted blood and they want more

I'll put up no resistance
Just promise Mittens
I've got to lower tax
I need derpsistance

Vote-a-vote-a-vote-a-vote-for-me
Why won't you love me?
Thrill me, chill me, fulfill me,
Creatures of the Right.

Then if trouble brews
While I schmooze
Kiss my ass, this is holy ground

(ground, ground, ground)

And that's just one small fraction
Of my unattraction,
Obama's still black,
I need this election!

Vote-a-vote-a-vote-a-vote-for-me
I'll be your Romney!
Thrill me, chill me, fulfill me,
Creatures of the Right.

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember how elections used to make me smile.
And I knew if they had their chance, that they would make the people dance
and maybe they'd be happy for awhile.
But, November makes me shiver
with every ballot that's delivered.
Bad news on the doorstep,
Romney took one last bet...

I can't remember if I cried
when Romeny made his 1040's hide.
But something rubs me wrong inside
each day, that Romney lies.

I've always wanted to be an internet wife!

I think what we need now is the lyrics to Whatever Happened to the Sensible Right

Rapmaster2000: I think the should go to the left, then to the right, then dip, then slide, and finally let the voters see that tootsie roll.

I think Willard prefers to do the Hokey Pokey because it involves doing something....then doing the complete opposite, and then shaking his etch-a sketch, and doing an about face, because that's what it's all about.

Whatever happened to the sensible right
When you compromised and avoided a fight
It don't seem the same since the Tea Party right
Won us back the House and I thought it was sublime

I used to go make a deal with a Dem like me
Wanted his bill through the subcommittee
A roll call would take place for an up or down vote
You got your law signed and you really had a good time

Filibuster bless my soul I really love that anonymous hold (x4)

How did a bunch of financially illiterate, agitated rednecks and retirees gain so much control over the policies of this country? WTF?????

If we have to spend another session with them I don't think the country can survive it.

But will you forget your promise? Will you break you vow? Does god only know what you might do right now??
