I wasn't expecting such dour faces either, but I supposed if I was 70 years old or overweight and had just spent the last hour standing in the August heat for a chicken sandwich I'd be looking grizzled myself.

It was 95 here yesterday. Is Mike Huckabee secretly trying to kill old people by making them stand in the heat?

Yet the trend throughout history is one of breaking down those hierarchies to include more and more people in an increasingly egalitarian worldview. We actually aren't seeing a trend of increasing boundaries between X and Y groups of people that lasts very long, and even when it does, it usually only does so in groups that resist change. Our sphere of moral consideration (to borrow a phrase from Peter Singer) is growing, encompassing more and more people who were considered "different" enough to discriminate against, to hate, to butcher, to kill, to terrorize. And it's because there are enough people on this planet that are fed up with being discriminated against or hated, and enough people who are disgusted at seeing other people discriminated against and hated, and they all are willing to do something about it.

It is supposed to be a wedding, not a trip down to Walmart, which is how the (forgive me if I mess up the terminology) brides are dressed up as. Where are the white gowns?

one thing I find odd and cannot quite find an explanation is the differences between gays and lesbians. Almost every picture of lesbians had one in a dress and one wearing pants. Whereas all the men were wearing pants. I did not see one gay couple where one was dressed as men typically do and one was dressed as a woman (yes one pair was wearing kilts, but they both were). Anyone help me out on why lesbian couples seem to always have a stud who tries to look like a man, and you hardly ever see two femmes?

I'm not sure how many lesbian weddings you have attended, so I don't know what your sample size is. It could be that you saw a non-representative sample.

That said, there are variations in fashion from one community to the next. Each community has its own traditions for appropriate wedding clothes, and there is variation within each community as well.

cman: LabGrrl: PanicMan: cman: Jesus Christ, although I am happy for them, arent homosexuals usually known for having style?

Is it somehow not applicable to New York homosexuals? Wow that attire is horrible

I think it was people just wanted to get it done before an injunction, hold, repeal, etc. At least for the first groups getting married.

This was precisely it for us. Teeshirts and jeans. It was 90 something degrees out and raining. I am not wearing a schmancy dress in hot steaming rain. As it was I almost fainted by the end (I was fresh out of the hospital, not knowing when I'd go back.)
The fancy clothes are for my family and friends, not for a government dude. I worked in a county courthouse for quite a while and hardly even saw straight couples dress up for what amounts to civil registry.

I never factored anything like that in my thought process (working against a possible injunction). I did not know how serious it was. Wow, I am sorry about the way that you folk have been treated. Its a shame

I'm pretty sure that's what happened in California with Proposition 8.

Kome: Yet the trend throughout history is one of breaking down those hierarchies to include more and more people in an increasingly egalitarian worldview.

I don't see it. I see shifts in the hierarchies, sure. But there will always be someone else to look down on. Someday, maybe it'll be white men who are hated and spit upon. It it deserved? Probably. Does that make things "equal?" Nope.

Just because we let more people into the in-group doesn't mean there will not be out-groups.

And it's because there are enough people on this planet that are fed up with being discriminated against or hated, and enough people who are disgusted at seeing other people discriminated against and hated, and they all are willing to do something about it.

That's what I said before. People hate being discriminated against because they feel they should be at the same level as the one who is discriminating. They want to advance in the hierarchy. They want the same status and power.

Challenger alpha males, basically.

I doubt it. Selfishness and fear are human qualities. These Tea Party loons are just the result of it being encouraged.

What would really help is if we could change our society and therefore our cultural identity as Americans to actually value concepts like honor, truth, justice and fairness - instead of just writing them in songs and shouting we're the best while plundering and failing.

Part of our challenge as such a young and varied country is that we have no real cultural identity that is purely American. We're still too closely related to the people who started the country to have developed our own. If we can keep this jimmy-rigged country together for another three hundred or so years, then maybe we can have some kind of unspoken quality that is American in being, not in slogan.

... But we are still clannish.

For true equality in society, there need to be a drastic and fundamental change in the way we structure it. And when you can get children to subjugate each other based only on eye color, I think that's folly.

Give a man an excuse to put down another man, and he will take it. And why wouldn't he, when our whole society is built upon that idea of a hierarchical social order?

LOL

Come on, even you have gotta admit that they should be better dressed for a wedding. Its the most important day of their life, and looking good while you are at it is a prerequisite

My brother and sis-in-law got married in casual attire in a courthouse. Both outfits have been worn again. You can't really do that with a wedding dress.

Weddings are supposed to be special, and these people were the first homosexuals in NY to get married. They are part of history. Forgive me if I sound old fashion, but when I picture gay weddings, I want to see it in a church in proper gowns. That is how you stick it to the haters.

I married a couple who were wearing jeans and a T-shirt. I was wearing shorts, Birkenstocks, and shirtsleeves with the sleeves rolled up. My hair was loose about my shoulders instead of tied back (like it is when I go to court or a job interview). I performed the brief ceremony in a park near Northern Illinois University.

Some people care about the aesthetics. Some people don't.

2012-08-02 04:49:43 PM
This just in: People getting married at a courthouse may or may not dress up. Ric Romero reports at 11.

I crossed the country to get married at the NYC courthouse. We sat and waited on the same benches some of those couples were photographed on. There were couples dressed up to the nines and couples less dressed up -- both gay and straight. We didn't dress up because our nice clothes wouldn't have held up in the cross-country train trip anyway.

It wasn't the ceremony that mattered to us -- it was being able to get the legal recognition in a few states, and the official piece of paper to prove it.

I don't know what it is. There's something so tender and moving about it. I guess when I see an old gay couple I have this whole narrative in my head that they lived their whole lives as a lie, before finally finding true love in the final act. It's so storybook.

Scuse me... *SOB*

A friend of mine and her partner flew back to NY to get married back when this went down. They got married I think three times in various states, hoping it would take. They managed to squeak in under the wire here in CA in the interval when same-sex marriage was legal (before they made it not legal).

It's so happy-making when people who have been together for 20+ years get to finally celebrate their marriage.

Because women - straight or gay - wear slacks as well as skirts. Outside of very fundamentalist sects of an Abrahamic religion, you would be hard-pressed to find a woman without even one pair of trousers. Western men - straight or gay - do not tend to wear dresses except when putting on a show or before operations to reassign their gender to female. (Sure, there are kilts, but they are rare.)

Did you really not know this?

HOW CAN WE SMILE WHILE GAY PEOPLE ARE LITERALLY SANTORUMMING ON THE BIBLE BY GETTING MARRIED?

2012-08-02 05:03:48 PM
I'm writing this hastily, so bear with me, but I just had a conversation about this with a dyed-in-the-wool conservative co-worker of mine.

I honestly don't know what to say...

We started jabbing about how shiatty a candidate Romney is - which he agrees, but he will never vote for Obama because he's so liberal. I told him that the only stance I've seen him be remotely liberal on is equal right for gay people, which my coworker said is the biggest issue to him.

I asked why is equality for gay people such an important issue to conservatives? His response was basically that the Bible (specifically Leviticus) forbids homosexuality because it is the biggest sin to God. I asked him about the other prohibitions put forth in Leviticus that are conveniently ignored and he said we've been falling away from God for a while and need to come back. (!)

He is also a lay minister at a church in the sticks and said his little town (of about 100) would run gays out of town if they moved in. I asked why - why is it such a problem, how is it hurting you? And it boiled down to that it makes him uncomfortable - why should liberals get to make him uncomfortable so much?

Hell, I don't really like watching two guys kiss (or even a heterosexual couple kiss, two girls - different matter and I don't know why), but it's not that big of a deal and it is certainly their right. But in the end he's upset that conservatives can't make gay people uncomfortable enough that they will stop asking for equal rights without backlash from pesky liberal activists. Literally.

But the thing that struck me is the "love the sinner, hate the sin" aspect he brought up. That he'd welcome gay people into his church but it is his job, as a Christian, to try to change them so that they know God and can enter heaven and if he "let's that kind of behavior" go, then he's failed God. What a burden. No wonder conservatives are such angry people. But man, a TON of conviction.

With people this convicted and willing to bow to even a shiatbird like Romney, November is going to be a tough one. Hell, this country is going to be a tough one.

What a burden. No wonder conservatives are such angry people. But man, a TON of conviction.

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.
Said in November 1994, as quoted in John Dean, Conservatives Without Conscience (2006)

Seems I get a chance to use this quote in just about every thread these days.

Oh, and he's only letting them in because he believes that they aren't really gay. They're actually straight people, choosing to act immorally.

He doesn't mean to try to change them, just to set them straight, if you'll pardon the pun.

Rapmaster2000: Dogpants:

Funny, with the exception of that idiot Palin and her secessionist husband, I don't see anybody smiling in any of those pictures. If I had to live like that I'd shoot myself.

I wasn't expecting such dour faces either, but I supposed if I was 70 years old or overweight and had just spent the last hour standing in the August heat for a chicken sandwich I'd be looking grizzled myself.

It was 95 here yesterday. Is Mike Huckabee secretly trying to kill old people by making them stand in the heat?

deep-fried death panels.

It's one way to reduce Medicare spending.
