"The Korbut Flip on uneven bars is no longer allowed in gymnastics competition because it involves standing on the high bar, a maneuver which is now illegal in the Code of Points"

I have to as, why is it "illegal in the Code of Points"?

Holy crap. I've seen nothing of olympic gymnasts because in general I don't care. But that was pretty farking impressive.

2012-08-02 11:48:28 AM
Also, the bars are further apart now, so you couldn't do the entire thing anyway.

Too many gymnasts winding up with smiles like Waffle House waitresses? Just a guess.

That routine deserved a 10. She was flawless on the bars and stuck the landing. Surprised they don't mention if she won a medal or not.

That was awesome. This is my main problem with gymnastics - everyone simply has to do the same set of moves and simply do them perfectly. You never see any creativity, anyone doing anything new. That's what the competition should be about - wowing us with athletic feats.

What is interesting to see is the evolution of the sport, from the 1950s to today. Then, it was more about grace and flexibility, with minimal acrobatics beyond maybe a handspring or a cartwheel. Now, it's see how many twists, flips, somersaults, and splits you can cram into a short balance beam or floor routine. Also, as someone else pointed out, the uneven bars are a lot further apart now than they were in the 1970s, so moves that she did besides the flip, would be impossible to do without the gymnasts breaking their necks.

Nah, it just won't be tragic from his perspective because he hates them.

You see, if someone writes a song you don't like, they should die. This is understandable since you have no control over what songs you hear and are daily forced to endure those you hate the most.

I distinctly remember the 88 Olympics. I was hanging out in the barracks lounge while I was in the Navy, with a bunch of bored sailors watching the screen for crotch shots. Then we were watching when this one gymnast, the Romanian one (Daniela Silivaş) was doing an amazing routine and stuck the landing so powerfully it straight up silenced the whole room. It was like she bent the laws governing inertia through sheer force of will. After that we watched, memorized, for a least 5 minutes before someone finally spoke. "That's.... beautiful..."

When I was watching it on T.V. they showed some of her previous routines but they kept rewinding the film backwards and forwards and I couldn't figure out why. We eventually realized that no, it wasn't some Purina Cat Chow video trick, she was actually doing that.

Also, after that, shiat got real in the competition. Her and the Russian gymnast were neck-and-neck going for straight 10's. The Russian chick went so far as to do a move on the balance beam that should have fractured her pelvis and ended her career. Link! They were mostly tied until one routine when the Russian scored like straight 10's and the Romanian would have as well except the Russian judge was the lone guy to give her a lower mark, thus costing her the Gold.

[/CSB]

Been searching the intertubes on and off for years trying to find those routines so see again.

Found one of her clips here.

Even better, but from a different competition. Watch this and let me know if you thought a human being could do that. I think even the judges were like "DAFARK???". With slo-mo at the end of the clip.

Here's another floor routine, but no cat-chow in this one, though. Link. Amazing height in one move, and I'd swear she actually hangs in the air a split-second longer than possible in another. The floor dive is great, too.

Still can't find the exact routine where she stuck the landing and got everyone's attention (including the tough crowd in Seoul). It was something like this, but with a different camera angle, and I'd swear she didn't bend her knees when she landed. She. Just. Stopped.

You know, I remember watching this performance back in 72, when I was a small child. Even on the fuzzy 19" set we could tell it was destined to be special. Sure she had some great moves and was truly a superb athelte. But there was always something in my mind that held that performance back from being the greatest ever gynamstic routine.

And thankfully today, I finally understand what it was.

I wholeheartely thank the person that put this video together with the masterwork of Linkin Park. With this carefully selected musical track, it transforms a fantastic feat of human athletic abilitiy into something else entirely....

Agreed, a lot of the grace and beauty of the sport have been lost, primarily due to the new scoring system which doesn't reward such things as much as it does the difficulty of the skills you throw.

I must have watched more Olympics has a kid then I remember. I have felt vaguely disappointed at the floor exercises the past couple times and could not figure out why.

But seeing some of those older routines, there is a lot more artistry in them. It's much more like they were dancing and added flips and twists to it. Modern routines is about the gymnastic passes and the dancing is the accessory that just gets them moved to the corner for the next pass.
