Fark you, Selig. I hope shingles and prostate trouble occupy most of your time.

Screw Pete Rose. Asshole brazenly lied for decades then did a 180 to sell a book and put more money in his pockets. He'll get there after he dies.

That said, I wonder where the owners will find a new puppet whose ass can accommodate all their hands at once.

Waaaaah Bud Selig destroyed the game by making it more enjoyable for everyone, increasing playoff teams so more than 4 cities actually care about baseball after July, making it so people who live in each city can see every team in baseball at their home stadium within a decade, and increasing revenue for everyone involved! What a sh*tty commissioner he was!

I'm a baseball fan and I'll simultaneously say that the All-Star Game doesn't matter, and that it was a travesty that one ended in a tie! I had no problem with the World Series HFA alternating between leagues every year, but to award it to the league that wins the ASG? TOTALLY RIDICULOUS AND UNFAIR!

Under Selig's reign, baseball is in a better position than ever before (compared to itself - obviously other sports have moved ahead in relevance, but that's just because they're better sports (especially for TV)). STFU and quit whining. And it's not even like he's the guy who banned Rose from the Hall.

IAmRight: Waaaaah Bud Selig destroyed the game by making it more enjoyable for everyone, increasing playoff teams so more than 4 cities actually care about baseball after July, making it so people who live in each city can see every team in baseball at their home stadium within a decade, and increasing revenue for everyone involved! What a sh*tty commissioner he was!

The Wild Card worked out spectacularly. And I was fine with it until they added second one in a on-and-done format. The argument has always been that the number of teams in the post-season is so small because the regular season is so long, that really separates the wheat from the chaffe. So now, it's going to be decided by one lousy game? Baseball is designed around series of games between teams - three game series in the regular season, then five and then seven. This is just a gimmick to try to recreate that "magic" of the final day of the season when a playoff berth is still on the line, which doesn't always happen. The new format is just a cheap trick to grab some ratings for two games, which you know damned well will be played on different nights.

You may be the first baseball fan I've heard claim that this All-Star gimmick of awarding home field advantage to the league that wins is a good idea. Even Vin Scully thinks it's idiotic, and Vin Scully is a national treasure (and I hate the Dodgers).

Under Selig's reign, baseball is in a better position than ever before (compared to itself - obviously other sports have moved ahead in relevance, but that's just because they're better sports (especially for TV)). STFU and quit whining. And it's not even like he's the guy who banned Rose from the Hall.

Selig's "reign", if you include the days when he was "acting commissioner", included the strike of 1994 that ended a season. Sure, baseball came back years later with the home run chase, but that was fueled by rampant PED usage, which Bud ignored for years out of fear of taking on Don Fehr on the one hand, and maybe killing the goose laying the golden egg on the other. He had to wait for Congress to have to step in and get Mitchell to do the tough work for him. Don't get me wrong - Overall, I like Bud Selig. He seems like a nice guy. And I think he really, really loves baseball. But he has not been a strong commissioner and he has made some really boneheaded moves in his tenure.

2012-08-02 11:41:07 AM
I really, really hate interleague play. Next year there will be interleague play all season. Thanks, Bud.

Also, the one game wild-card "playoff" is the dumbest idea ever.

2012-08-02 11:56:30 AM
Pud Lite is an ass. We don't need a second wild card. Why not just let everyone in! Playoff baseball for everyone! No, I'd prefer if we went back to the pre-'95 way we did things. Either you win your division or you're golfing. End of. Go back to two divisions per league. If that means only four teams are playing baseball in October, so be it. It worked out great from 1969 to right after the strike. Before that, it was only ONE team per league, so at least with this set-up, we get an extra series. Interleague play should consist of the World Series and the ASG, and the ASG should count for nothing. It's an exhibition game, it should be completely meaningless. Also, get rid of the DH. Make pitchers bat. If NL pitchers can do it, so can AL pitchers. It won't kill them. I'd also like more day games, but that's not entirely up to the commish, I don't think. It would be even more awesome if some playoff games were during the day, but God forbid we keep Joe Nepotism and Tim McSenility off the air for an evening. Put the playoffs back on CBS, let Bob Costas call the games; if you don't like him, how about Al Michaels or someone with some gravitas? FOX has ruined baseball for me, to the point that if the Yankees are in the playoffs or even on FOX during the regular season, I will listen to the radio feed, rather than watch the game. I can't stand those two ass-munchers.

Make Cal Ripken, Jr. commish when Pud's tenure is up. At least Ripken played the game and didn't used to be a slimy used car salesman.

Baseball Commissioner Joe Torre. You heard it here first.

2012-08-02 01:31:45 PM
For all the complaining about the second wild card slot, did everyone forget a couple years ago when the Yankees and Rays were activally trying to not win the division? With one wild card slot, winning your division was pointless if that leads to a harder opponent.
A one and done seems much better, more exciting baseball, and a real reason for winning your division instead of resting everyone.

/the rest of his choices... easier to not mention right now

Technically he wasn't banned - Rose himself signed a document that said he's permanently ineligible. Gee, maybe if he wanted into the HoF so bad, he shouldn't have signed that document, huh?

Not likely. For 25 years he walked past a sign in the clubhouse that said 'IF YOU BET ON BASEBALL YOU WILL BE BANNED FOR LIFE', then he bet on baseball. They'll keep him out just because of his arrogance.

The second wildcard is doing exactly what it was designed to do, placing value on winning your division. I dont really like the one game playoff system. Im sure it will change when they figure out how to make more money off of it.

If MLB recovered to heyday form: Joe Torre is brilliant! His leadership saved MLB!
If MLB starts/continues the slow burn: Joe Torre is brilliantly managing this league to not-suckitude!

Basically, Joe Torre gets a pass for life because he managed an All-Star team for 9 years while Steinbrenner spent every offseason buying up the best talent of the previous year.

Anyway, I like Cal Ripken, Jr for commish. There is no one on the planet with more respect and reverence for the game than CRJ (except maybe Michael Jordan).

// and put Pete Rose in the Hall - no picture, no descriptions; just his name, career numbers, and criminal record

Thank God. Maybe in 2014 the new commissioner will finally let the A's move to San Jose, which is their rightful territory in the first place. 7 years of refusing to allow the matter to even be discussed at the owners meetings has taken its toll.

The Giants can go fark themselves.

As a fan I don't give a rat's ass what he signed. And, really, as long as there's no implication that he fixed games, I don't care that he bet on his own team. You can say he mismanaged pitchers, but you take any player who's just retired and stick him into a managment role immediately, you're gonna see some mismanagement.

4256. That's all that matters to me.

And there's a bunch of speculation (much from Rose himself, but some from outside the self-aggrandizing class) that had ol' Whatshisname not died of a stroke the week after basically forcing Rose to sign, The Ban was to be looked at a year later. Instead, Selig took over and said he wasn't interested in anything that Rose and Bart (what the hell is his goddamn name?) discussed.

Um, yeah. I'd rather see them get rid of th DH. If a pitcher is gonna throw inside he should have to step into the batters box when it's his turn.

You're more than welcome to open your own hall of fame with that number plastered all over the place. It's not gonna change the fact that the powers that be and a large percentage of the baseball world thinks he shouldn't be in the HoF in Cooperstown.

2012-08-02 01:54:48 PM
Selig gets a lot of shiat he doesn't deserve. I understand that baseball is a collection of people who biatch endlessly about change who happen to follow a sport on the side, but the game is generally better off now.

Interleague? Jesus Christ. It's here now. It's been here for more than a decade. Get the f*ck over it. There is no rational reason to hate it other than "OMG IT'S NOT OLD TIMEY". Next year it's going to enable baseball to have two leagues with the same number of teams and eliminate the crappy 4 team AL West/6 team NL Central situation.

Playoffs? Three teams per league assured of playing a divisional series and two teams per league that will have to play a sudden death game to get in is perfectly fine. It's incentive to win your division that wasn't there before, and it's made this season far more interesting for many more baseball fans. Fewer teams throwing in the towel in July and selling off their roster is perfectly fine with me.

The All-Star game setting WS home field is moronic, but all the idiotic fans clamoring for it is what made that happen. That and ESPN treating an exhibition game ending in a tie as "THE WORST MOMENT IN HISTORY EVER".

Cagey B: Selig gets a lot of shiat he doesn't deserve. I understand that baseball is a collection of people who biatch endlessly about change who happen to follow a sport on the side, but the game is generally better off now.

All commissioners do.

2012-08-02 01:58:48 PM
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Anyone who thinks Bug Selid will be replaced by anyone other than another crony is dreaming. The Commissioner represents the owners, not the teams or the sport. The owners would never submit to someone who actually cares about the game.

Nabb1: Don't get me wrong - Overall, I like Bud Selig. He seems like a nice guy. And I think he really, really loves baseball.

Please. . . I mean this sincerely, not sarcastically. . . please learn to be a little more cautious judging character. Characters are defined by actions, and Bud's actions do not fit the pattern of a guy who gives a shiat. I worked with sales. The notion that someone can "seem like a nice guy" is a very easy and well-practiced act, and one that is all but required for a corporate higher-up and face of an organization. Bud is both. Of course he'll talk like he really loves baseball; even though with its Congressional anti-trust exemption in hand baseball is the furthest thing from a democratic process in America, it's always easier to shove dick moves down the throats of your customers when you act like you care. Remember when they tried to put ads on the bases? Sure, they listened to the public then (if only because the howls of outrage were that loud), but I don't know anyone who likes baseball who would've entertained the idea for even a moment.

Baseball is an entertainment talent monopoly. If you're one of the best baseball players in the world, you work for the MLB. It's kind of hard to screw that up. Sure baseball's grown during his 20-year reign, but the economy has grown. And globalized. Replace Selig with a baked potato and the results might've been even better.
