Wow, what a detailed article, "T Moves to Fire Man Who Called in Sick From Jail" and a mug shot, such in depth reporting.

With that out of the way, they're my personal days and I'll use them as I see fit.

So it's not just my browser? That's good to hear...

I was at a computer show about 15 years back in Virginia. The booth I was looking at was selling barebones PCs and was having trouble keeping up with the number of customers they had.

The guy manning the table yelled back to the guy at the till, "Where's Joe? He was supposed to be here this morning at 9."
The register guy answered back, "No idea. I called his house and his mom said she hadn't seen him. Then I called the jail and he wasn't picked up last night."

I realized at that moment that there was another America that I was simply not a part of, and frankly, didn't want to have any part of.

I have to wonder if what he was arrested for was the reason he was fired. It'd be nice if there were an article.

I was wondering if my browser had done something odd too!

Why would they fire him for this? Is it illegal to use a sick day for personal reasons?

/works for self. I take time off when I wanna.

Who is T and why would he want to fire this man from jail? These are the burning issues of our times.

I've had two co-workers fail to show up on a Monday because they were in jail and have myself been busted on lunch break and had to take the rest of the day off, so yeah, getting a kick...

2012-08-02 01:44:01 PM
Boss asked someone why (another guy) wasn't at work Monday, (other guy) tells the truth and says he was in jail "after the weekend" whatever that meant. Shocked silence for a few seconds. "But... yeah I deserved it." More silence.

That's a bit unfair. That type of jailing is usually for people with drinking problems (i.e. Otis in the Andy Griffith Show), not any real criminal behavior.

When I was a teenager one of my first jobs was working on a tar and gravel roofing crew, which was a pretty rough bunch, mostly (American) Indians. Anyway, quite often on the way to a job we'd pick up some of the crew from jail. They'd still be drunk and would spend the first hour or two lying on the ground at the worksite, maybe puking. Then finally they'd be good to go.

It is certainly sad that people live like that, but it is a bit snobby to say you don't want "to have any part of" it.

Never tell your employer you were in jail. It's called "personal matters" and leave it at that.

Yeah. I agree with both of you. I think that personal days are yours to use however you want to use them but, depending on the job and the crime, getting arrested could/should get you fired. Also, an article would really be nice.

Edward Demase called out sick for a three-month stretch last year. At the time, the MBTA let him keep his job and only gave him a written warning for violating their attendance policy.

As Team 5 Investigates first reported in July, Demase couldn't have gone to work when he called out sick because he was in jail for beating his wife.

Court records show that last November, Demase "bashed her head on the floor" and "held her mouth shut" resulting in "significant injuries."

His wife told Peabody police that her husband was "on steroids" and "experiences episodes of rage."

MBTA officials told us they did not know about his conviction or incarceration until Team 5 started asking questions. That's when the T suspended him for 14 days without pay.

NewsCenter 5 has learned the agency started the termination process for him, which will take 30 days, according to union rules.

An MBTA spokesman also says five of Demase's supervisors have been disciplined for their roles.

Sources tell Team 5 each of them got a written warning for failing to properly check out Demase's sick claims.

Demase did not return our call requesting comment. He hasn't replied to any of our interview requests in the past.

So roid freak beat his wife, went to jail for three months, and they held his job for that long??? Don't you need a doctor's note or something?

Hey, there are great parts of Virginia, Virginia Beach to Richmond to DC and Charlottesville. The rest of the state not so much but the beer and wine tours almost make up for it.

Don't feel sorry for me. It reminds me of an anecdote.

A Harvard man, a Princetonian, and a Yalie are taking a bathroom break at the annual equestrian club fundraiser. The Harvard man flushes and starts walking out the door. The Princetonian calls out, "Don't they teach you to wash your hands at Harvard?" The Harvard man quips back, "Don't they teach you not to piss on your hands at Princeton?"

The Yalie flushes and walks over to the sink and says, "We Yalies don't need to be taught not to piss on ourselves."

Well now that we have an article, it appears that he called in sick for THREE FARKING STRAIGHT MONTHS while doing time for battering his girlfriend. I think some of his supervisors need to be let go too.
