El Uno Magnifico: bdub77: It's kind of weird though that even though she's the overall leader in gymnastics and has been top of the leaderboards, they give the person in second place the last position in the rotation. I mean if you were in that position, you could potentially change your routine to make it more difficult as needed, you know the score to beat so now you know what you have to do. Seems unfair.

Routines are set in advance. I'm not an expert but I don't think any gymnastics coach in his/her right mind would let an athlete tinker at the last minute with a high-level, elite routine that has been practiced endlessly for weeks.

True. But in the women's team gymnastics one of the US girls (she was the anchor) took out one difficult move on her routine she was having issues with after they watched the Russians choke.

At this point I'm pretty sure there are magnets under the floor in this velodrome. How many world records have fallen in just the last couple of hours?

Oh, I can definitely see reducing the difficulty. That's a lot easier than making a routine harder at the last minute.

Granted, the guy who won gold at the all-around in 2008 probably could've gotten away with it, not that his routines could've gotten much harder.

Yeah, I got money on Gabby Douglas being the new star from these games. Boy I am sure out on a limb, arent I.

So Ally Raisman got jobbed, beats Mustafina on 3 of the 4 events, ends up with the same score and loses...

I'm pretty sure Leyva yesterday changed his highbar routine for a more difficult one, as it was all or nothing at that point to get a medal.

Gabby doesn't even look that excited. This is why you shouldn't have 12-year-olds out there. They don't get why it's a big deal.

Siamese Bream: How many world records have fallen in just the last couple of hours?

three or four

2012-08-02 01:21:14 PM
Siamese Bream: Fair enough. Maybe before that China had more total medals as well so I wasn't paying too much attention and just assumed the American sites I was looking at were ranking the normal way.

Not even close but you are forgetting the USSR and East Germany. Medal counts have been (at least in the US) expressed and ranked based on total medals obtained for decades. Check the counts for 1992, 1988, 1976, 1972, 1968, and especially 1964 (where you'll see US ranked second despite having more golds than the USSR).

This isn't some new trend used to maintain US supremacy in the medal table while screwing China.

2012-08-02 01:21:16 PM
Damn it, China.

2012-08-02 01:21:23 PM
I don't see why in hell they wouldn't just give the tie in gymnastics to both individuals. That seems completely unfair.

there their theyre: So Ally Raisman got jobbed, beats Mustafina on 3 of the 4 events, ends up with the same score and loses...

THIS: that's a horrible tie-breaker. So Mustafina screws up bad on one, but that doesn't matter. It should reward the gymnast who did better ALL-AROUND, I thought that was the point.

JerseyTim: NBC is going to milk the hell out of this tonight.

Yep. It's amazing how quickly this event was actually over when you compare it to the 4 hours they stretch it out on NBC.

And my wife will insist on watching every second of it.

It seemed new to me at the time because I'd never seen them ranked that way before, so it appeared like a transparent attempt to move the goalposts. Apparently not, though, so my guess is that earlier in the 2008 games, China had more total medals as well so I didn't notice the different ranking system.

That they will.

On the one hand: that is the stupidest damned tie breaker rule I have ever heard of
on the other hand, I am not looking forward to the epic cry and biatch fest that will eschew out of the mouths of the announcers.

Wait, I had cycling, then it changed to news...then I found cycling, and now it's water polo. Where did cycling go?

2012-08-02 01:25:44 PM
So all you aspiring gymnasts out there remember, if you totally f*ck up one of your events, that might be good in case you tie with someone else. Then you win, because it's overall, and obviously screwing up worst in one event means you were the better overall.

Wait, what?

2012-08-02 01:27:21 PM
Pre-2012 Olympic coverage: This new tiebreaker rule is great...if they had it four years ago Nastia Liukin would have had another gold medal!

Now that it cost an American a medal, this new tiebreaker system will clearly be viewed as an OUTRAGE by NBC.

If he did, props to him for pulling it off - I'm impressed. Just fighting against muscle memory is hard enough, much less doing it well enough to win a medal.

Dear NBC,
I am at work and they don't pay me to stream the games so if you could either turn up your streaming or turn down your commercials, that be great.

I want/need volume because I am working on the first monitor and streaming on the second, and when commentators get excited I know when to watch.

Or, simple put get being horrible NBC.

Sincerely,
Mr. Soaboutthat

They introduced a new tiebreaker prior to the 2012 Olympics, which is described here.

As it turns out, this time around Raisman lost out on the tiebreaker.

What is going on in cycling with the Chinese team?

2012-08-02 01:33:51 PM
Gymnastics has the worst set of rules ever.

Here's what's required:

1) Pay tons of money to learn gymnastics
2) Starve yourself and reduce body fat to 1%
3) Stunt your growth
4) Miss puberty
5) If you are really lucky go to the Olympics - probably only once, because you are 16 and will be replaced in four years.
6) If your team is good and you are fourth best out of everyone, so sorry you go home now.
7) Along with #6, someone will shove a camera in your face on international television and people will ask you questions ad absurdum about it.
8) Along with #7, they will also interview the person who won while you are crying in the background, to humiliate you further.
9) If you do well and you are tied for third best but someone screws up a routine more than you, so sorry you go home now.
10) Along with #9, someone will shove a camera in your face on international television and people will ask you questions ad absurdum about it.
11) No one will probably remember you in four years, let alone 8.

So, in summary: Become a swimmer or a runner, the worst you have to do is do an interview with a blunt b*tch once after a short event.

The order of performance is predetermined.

Sure, but in every other event I know of they let the leader go last. Snowboarding for example. Just seems weird to me.

The order was such that the #1 qualifier went last, preceded by the #2 qualifier, and so on back within the last rotation.

What's funny is college gymnasts actually look like young woman, have the builds you'd expect for a sport so physically demanding, and are every bit as good as Olympic gymnasts. But thanks to Bela and others, they're not even considered for the Olympic team.

GB lost their first two matches by a combined total of 23 goals. If they wait for an actual ovation-worthy moment they're going to have a long night.

They haven't participated in the Olympics since 1956 so I'm guessing they're not very good. Which is sort of a shame because they won gold in 1900, 1908, 1912, and 1920.

The Chinese cyclists are at least putting a brave face on it on the podium.
