If there is money involved in any way, there will always be corruption. No exceptions.

Freakonomics.

I can't figure out the Olympics streaming site, I did the verification process sailed right through, and all of their videos show me nothing but a blackscreen (with crisp audio however) just like this linked one from the official site. I can see the starting image on this one till I click play, and it's got the YouTube logo in the bottom corner, and all of their shiat plays fine still. Checked my Flash Player, fully updated, makes no sense.

Luckily there are plenty of places to watch them from overseas, just watch the Euro ads instead of the NBC ones, pretty smooth those NBC guys

i watched some of these fights and the calls from the ref were horrible, hell even the commentators started making statements on the "missed calls" from the ref with barely veiled contempt.

First the Azerbaijan guy tackles the japanese guy like he was a defensive end sacking a quarterback. Then the japanese guy knocked down the azerbaijan guy six times. Six times. The ref doesn't even give the Azerbaijan guy a standing 8 count once. The Azerbajian fighter can barely stand while propping himself on to the rope as the ref raises his hand as the victor.

Probably can add the judges randomly deducting points from the American gymnast's vault the other day when every commentator said was perfect and the still photos of the judges taken mid-vault showed them all giving a "HOLY FARKING SHIAT" face.

It's the Olympics. Anything that's subjectively judged is going to be laden with more filth and more corrupted than the hard drive on your single 53-year-old uncle's month-old computer.

IMO, American skaters and gymnasts have always been at a disadvantage in the Olympics, due to favoritism showed by the judges. They're routinely in the tank for competitors from Europe and Russia, sometimes blatantly so. Their random deduction here falls in that group as well.

As for the boxing, I watched the last round of the fight. the amount of sheer corruption in that decision would have made even Don King blush.

2012-08-02 10:56:15 AM
I watched that fight, and was screaming at the damn tv. The Japanese fighter would run up to the Azerbaijian boxer, punch him in the head, and knock him down. Ref would talk to the Azerbaijiani, his hand motions seemed to suggest he was saying "stop trying to tackle your opponent" (which he had been doing the whole match), didn't do a ten count while he was on his ass, and no standing eight after he stumbled to his feet, re-start the match and the same thing happened again. And again, and again, and again...half a dozen times.

Teddy Atlas and the other commentator were fuming, talking about how the boxing commission admitted to accepting $8 million from some rich Azerbaijiani who was trying to influence referees, and all but recommending that the ref be strung up with a rope.

I felt bad for the Japanese fighter, he came back from a huge deficit, was pummeling his opponent like Ike Turner, and lost the match.

2012-08-02 10:58:25 AM
I can't tell if he is falling down or if the Japanese fighter is pulling him down with all the holding behind the head.

MMA is the kid's version of a fight extended to a logical conclusion. Pankration in underpants. Awesome, difficult, but if I wanted to see two men punch each other in the cock all day I'd rent shizer porn from that skeevy video store down the street.

What I want to see is real sword fights. Even if they use titanium armor and plastic swords, just let them use the nasty techniques and develop their own new ones as well. No first touch, either. Out will be obvious, like boxing.

I agree with the corruption calls though, these Olympics have been a fiasco from the start, and that's not even counting the HORRIBLE media coverage here in the US.

I still remember 2000 when Alexi Nemov did a gymnastics routine (either bars or rings, I forget), got scored at what amounted to a 7, and the crowd nearly rioted until the head of Olympics Gymnastics actually was forced to pull the judges aside and raise his score. Everyone could see that he'd been screwed. And that was a Russian gymnast in front of a Greek audience.

Hey look, ESPN keeps articles from that long ago.

No, dipshiat. She posted the fastest 50 in that race when she had been holding back waiting for the last leg. The media hype has it wrong, she was not faster then the men doing the same race, she was only faster then them on the last leg, and it is obvious she is not going full out until the end.

This. Its called pacing. Yes it was an extraordinary improvement over her past performance. But she was 15 before and is 16 now. It is entirely within the realm of possibility for someone with those ages to show dramatic changes in their performance as their body changes. Its a little late for a girl to still be changing significantly in puberty but not that much. Despite the bad reputation of the Chinese for cheating (which they bloody well earned, given statistics) I think in this case the swimmer is getting a bad rap for a great performance.

and again, it was the last 50 in a longer race. You hold back until the end and then let fly. If anything she should have picked up the pace in the previous laps if she had so much still in the tank at the end...

Maxx,

You must be young. During the Pre-Soviet break-up days the corruption was much worse. The East Germans gymnastics judges were legendary, they caused the whole 'throw out the top and bottom scores" methodology.

Cheating was blatant and routine. And don't get me started on the science experiments that were the East German swimmers.

These games have issues, those games took it to an extreme.

Deadspin's got both. One's a full on nipple out (the angry one), the other is an underwater shot that's not nearly as good.

Even the US commentators said something along the lines of "Oh, her legs came apart a little in the air, but they should have just ignored it and given her a perfect score."

The judges gave her the highest execution score of any female vault in the last 2 Olympics+3 World Championship event+team finals (and possibly of all time since the current scoring system has been in place, I didn't check), and still the commentators whined about it not getting a perfect score.
