If only their drug problem was less public, and more private.

I like the show Border Wars on whatever channel it's on, but it drives me nuts when they find a bunch of weed and the agent looks at the camera and makes some stupid statement about how they're keeping the streets safe by finding it.

Uh huh. Meanwhile states are slowly decriminalizing it and anyone who wants it can buy it.

They probably also got handed a shiat ton of money from the cartels. If only there were some way to reduce the amount of money available for corrupting government officials...

I'm sure we can come up with something simple that would better the entire continent on every level in uncountable ways that will be entirely disregarded by the DEA and everyone is DC.

So much freaking human suffering over an authoritarian desire to control people and plants.

There is no logical reason to cause this kind of suffering to keep people away from marijuana, especially when it doesn't even work.

Follow the drinking gourd,
Follow the drinking gourd,
For the old man is awaiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the drinking gourd.

/Been reading up on the classic folk song above, and I'm not advocating it for this story, but 10,000,000 other Mexicans got carried to freedom following the drinking gourd.

The DEA launders the money. The CIA handles the smuggling. Also trains the cartels soldiers at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. The ATF supplies the antiaircraft weapons and small arms. The justice department does the PR. The FBI with the help of Schools, churches, and big pharma does domestic propaganda. The entire rest of the US legal system keeps prices artificially inflated and keeps competition down. MEXICO has a drug problem.

How long before we can press some of these in our country against our officials/leaders/politicians?

The US should stop buying drugs from Mexico, to stop their problems.

They should also stop buying oil from Canada, Canadians have likewise become too dependent upon their more successful neighbor.

Well, duh. Once the Army got involved in the drug war it was only a matter of time before they were compromised by the money in it. You could see this coming from a mile away.

This is why when some idiot on Fark says "we should get our Army to take on these drug cartels and kablammo" you know that person is an idiot. Trust me, you generally don't want your military bought and paid for by organized crime.

not sure what that even means - but i'm confident that the u.s. would do just fine - hell, we've had a decade plus experience being at war in similar conditions: hot desert - pissed off / scared brown locals - urban fighting conditions - our boys would feel right at home.

as for how our military is paid for - think someone here already covered that.

/still think a border manned by the u.s. army with checkpoints - like an "ellis island in the desert" - for those that legally want to immigrate is a solid idea. certainly haven't heard much to the contrary.

Gotta read this book - its an awesome account on the evolution of the Mexican drug war -

in terms of the mega-vilonce that has occurred the last 5 or so years, it might actually be a good sign that the government is getting back into the drug business -

Except the Mexican cartels don't deal with marijuana for the most part. They are dealing with cocaine. A lot more money in cocaine and less competition with small growers.

That said, legalize drugs.

nearly 40% of pot consumed in the USA comes from Mexico... and how much is that industry worth in the USA? Billions of dollars?
