"I cannot exercise, my muscles don't work like everyone else's do."

I like Adam Carolla's take on food "intolerances".

Something along the lines of "in 15 years of working and eating lunch with poor whites, blacks, and Mexicans, I never once met a single one of them who had a food intolerance."

Food "intolerance": The very definition of middle-to-upper class white people problems.

AbbeySomeone: I just don't like diet food

I could see that- if someone says "diet" to me i don't think of a nice salad with a light vinagrette, plenty of fresh veggies or fruit and perhaps a piece of lean grilled chicken. I think of pre-packaged foods labelled diet.

2012-08-01 05:08:00 PM
There are two people in my office of nine that claim to be gluten intolerent.

It's fine with me because it prevents people from forcing cupcakes and that sort of junk on me. that aren't supposed to be part of my diet. (I can never turn down a free meal, and have no willpower.)

2012-08-01 05:33:17 PM
Yes some people claim to have it when they've never been properly diagnosed but assuming that everyone claiming it is lying is just as ridiculous. As someone with a pretty obscure, but properly diagnosed, allergy to olive oil who gets unknowingly "tested" a couple times a year by an idiot at a restaurant (or even the occasional "friend", hell, even my mom once) who thinks I'm just making it up and knowingly gives me food containing olive oil "to see what would happen": roll your eyes at them if you want but just take people at their word.

/that's not counting the times that they honestly don't know or I don't ask enough questions
//I really love having to ask new pizza places if their crust, sauce or sauteed veggies contain olive oil, they think I'm some sort of bad undercover pizza spy trying to steal all their trade secrets

CommieTaoist: assuming that everyone claiming it is lying is just as ridiculous

Right.

If 6% of a population have a "disorder" and 30% have it, then most of them are self-diagnosed. So it is safe to assume that 80% of the people who tell you they're gluten-sensitive are WRONG. But they've convinced themselves of it, so they believe it to be true. 8 out of 10 are WRONG. But wrong does not equal lying.

I was in great shape, just finished P90X when I came down with Chronic Fatigue. it definitely wasn't because I was lazy. After about a year, hormone treatments brought me out of it, but I spent most of that year in bed. Awful and frustrating. Terrifying really, I thought the whole rest of my life was going to be that way. Now I'm back, doing yoga, weight training, and running... but still not 100% of my old self.

However I agree with the headline... people convince themselves of a lot of crazy crap.

Like convincing themselves they're experts on who has the intolerance and who doesn't.

It's so far-fetched so they must be making it up, right?

Kind of reminds me of the anti-global warming dim bulbs.

One of my FB friends is constantly announcing her gluten free diets, liver detoxes, fasts, raw diets, and algae purges. Most of her "symptoms" are probably her body getting annoyed at the various nutritional shocks she's putting it through, not to mention ketosis in various forms. Sometime I just want to shake her through the Interwebs and tell her, "Eat a healthy diet in moderation with plenty of water and your damn body will detox itself like it was farking designed to do!"

Africans and Asians tend to not get Celiac and gluten intolerance, however about 80% are lactose intolerant. Asians also get red-faced while drinking do to a slight alcohol intolerance.

In Wheat Belly, Dr. Davis says that it isn't just gluten that is to blame, it's exophorins(sp?) that cause inflammation and can aggravate the brain. Interesting read.

There's a lot of health problems from overeating carbohydrates, so if you eat too much bread, going on a glutten-free diet might help -- at least until you discover glutten-free bread.

On that note, I thought I had a gluten intolerance so I stopped eating it. I started feeling great. But then I started eating a lot of baked potatoes. I felt worse. I realized that it wasn't the gluten making me sick, it was the cheese on the pizza, bread, bagels, pasta etc that had been making my tummy upset. So I got some lactaid. Problem solved.

I just finished a Master's program that was predominately female (like 90% or more) and SO many of my classmates claimed gluten was the cause of all their health woes. It was ridiculous. I'm pretty sure one girl used a gluten free diet to lose a bunch of weight and then just kept going with the story that she was allergic to gluten. I guess all those people who jumped on the Atkins diet years ago need something new

2012-08-01 05:54:36 PM
Bu... but MY intestinal villi are SPECIAL! They're more sensitive than other people's!

2012-08-01 05:54:39 PM
IIRC, the last time we had this discussion someone made a good point about gluten issues. Namely, it's less about the fact that we're having gluten, as we're having biologically over-engineered gluten that our bodies just don't recognize anymore as such. It's an interesting theory, which basically means that since not everyone has Celiac's, the ones who do must be on Darwin's watch list, and the 24% who say they have it but don't are just wannabes and AW's.

But yes, as a country, given how many shows and infomercials and books and "specialists" there are out there, we have made self-diagnosis into a farking art form.

\friend is trying the gluten free thing right now, but for knee issues
\\seeing how many dr's she's been to for said knee, it's as good an idea as any of the previous ones
