What's entertaining, is that more often than not, these folks likewise complain about the Nanny State. Yet, they expect for folks to "think of the children!" and keep their precious snowflakes from being exposed to dirty thoughts, sex ed, differing faiths, evolution, or anything that they don't like...

2012-08-01 03:44:15 PM
The rhetoric, while insane, is horribly insulting to the memories of the cited days.

A surprise attack by the Japanese Empire in an attempt to weaken the United States and leave it in a position to potentially be invaded by an army bent on world rule in no way comes close to a mandate that women can have birth control pills.

Further, when I think back to the live video of humans jumping from the 100th floor of the Trade Center Towers, choosing the horrible kiss of cement over the prospect of burning alive, I find his analogy, well, lacking.

In short, fark you, sir. fark you.

2012-08-01 03:50:13 PM
Yes, because allowing women to determine when they choose to become pregnant is the same as a surprise bombing attack and hijacked planes downing skyscrapers. They are exactly the same thing. Kudos to you Mr. Kelly for cracking the case.

Mike Kelley is one of my favorite visual artists. He did stuff with stuffed animals. His work always made me happy. I am sorry that he passed away in January. I don't know this other Mike Kelly and I don't think I want to.

Don't count out motivated crazy people and the apathetic voting public. Plus, people are always willing to vote against their own interests if they feel that they'll strike a blow against some imaginary enemy and stick it to them.

They'll only start caring when they realize these issues actually affect them, and that thing they hate benefits them. See all the "Obamacare" critics who are now for it when the provisions already in place saved their lives, or the lives of family members.

LordJiro: don't understand: It used to be funny when these morons said sh*t like this. But now it's downright sad.

Stick a fork in America the Republican party. She's done.

FTFY.

The Republican party is self destructing. They're increasingly relying on the lunatics of their base, and as they legitimize the loons, the loons push out the less-loony.

Eventually, the Republican party will consist of two people, each screaming at the other for being a RINO because they refuse to cut off their left foot for being too leftist.

I'm hoping the end-game of this is that the Tea Party finishes taking over the GOP, while "moderate Republicans" form a third party that eventually replaces the current GOP. Then again, moderate Republicans are now just called Democrats. We need a working two-party system, not Democrats and anti-Democrats.

Okay, fark this noise. I am so, SO relieved that health insurance has to cover birth control. Fark you Blue Cross Blue Shield, I didn't choose to live a life of debilitating pain. Because of my health I can't work very much and while bc isn't crazy expensive, it would be nice to have it covered so I have one less bill to worry about.

I still fail to see how allowing contraception, a way of lowering the abortion and STD rate while encouraging sexual responsibility, is an assault on someone else's religious freedom. It's an assault on your ability to smugly deny someone the right to purchase condoms or pills with insurance, but too farking bad. If you want to selectively choose how you dole out health care, become a witch doctor. Health care is for those who want to help people and make them better, not condemn and hate them and wish them to death.

And had conservatives not spent the last few decades farking up our economy with trickle down economics, they might be able to and this wouldn't be a problem.

But since the system now favors what's become little more than a pyramid scheme economy, people working hard for 80 hours a week can't afford premiums. You want to eliminate welfare and the need for it? Stop pissing around with trickle down and start working on making so people get paid for the work they do, rather than the people above them getting rich off the backs of everybody else.

NeoCortex42: I don't get this "religious freedom" argument against insurance coverage of birth control. Nobody is being forced to use it. Paying into something that may use money to give someone else something you disagree with already happens all the time through taxes. What about people whose religion is against killing with no exceptions? Do they get to not pay taxes because that money might eventually be used to supply the military?

I had this conversation with a woman who is a fundie/Catholic. She's a shoe-in for the gold medal in mental gymnastics. Essentially, anything that anyone is doing that is not what the Catholic church proscribes is interfering with her freedom of religion. People using birth control (other than NFP) is wrong and just being subjected to knowing that people use it violates her freedom.

She (via insurance) doesn't want to pay for other people's BC; if she's paying into a system that provides birth control, especially free birth control, that violates her freedoms. I pointed out (with references) that free contraception will lower insurance costs, meaning she's really not paying for it. No, if it's in the plan it violates her freedom and she would happily pay higher premiums for insurance that doesn't cover BC (despite the fact that she has 3 kids and her husband's a grad student).

I pointed out that half the pregnancies in this country are unplanned and that's where abortions come from, so more birth control=fewer abortions. She denies that and anyway the solution is to outlaw abortion, not use evil birth control to lower the number of abortions.

When the whole groupon/kink.com thing was happening, she was shocked (seriously) to find out that people had BDSM sex. It's wrong, wrong for everyone and no one should be doing it. And yes, it violates her freedom of religion when people have BDSM sex because it makes society more coarse and prevents her from raising her children in a society that conforms to Catholicism.

She sincerely believes that all laws should conform to the teachings of the Catholic church, because the church wants what's best for you. So a country where the laws match Catholicism would be the best for everyone.

I weep for our once great nation.

Before, Americans understood that this nation was special. It was unique. The US, and it's people, were chosen for a higher purpose. God blessed America.

But now? Thanks to liberals and feminists and non-Christians, we have fallen. We have degraded to the point where we actually believe that we control our own lives and our own choices. That we can choose to not be heterosexual. That we can choose to not be Christian. That we can choose if we want children. What hubris! Those are not our choices to make. The choices in our lives belong only to God.

We have turned away Him, and he has forsaken us. Our country suffers. Look and despair!

Religious freedom means everyone in the country doing exactly what your religion tells them to do. Now, that might sound like some sort of Theocracy to those that haven't studied the Bible, but if you read it enough, and follow the appropriate interpretations, edits, reworkings, skipping of entire chapters, and so on that our sect tells you to, you will obviously see why everyone should follow the random set of unrelated policies we prescribe or burn in hell.

Fark you Blue Cross Blue Shield, I didn't choose to live a life of debilitating pain. Because of my health I can't work very much and while bc isn't crazy expensive, it would be nice to have it covered so I have one less bill to worry about.

I can understand the argument birth control (along with Viagra) is a lifestyle drug and people can pay for their own damn sex, but coverage for medical use like you're describing is a total no-brainer. It's messed up that it wasn't always covered.

cameroncrazy1984: The only way you're not paying for someone's birth control now is if you don't have insurance at all. The only difference now is that it must be covered with no copay. Or did you think that birth control wasn't covered by insurance before today?

It depends on your insurance plan. On my plan, BC was not covered by insurance (at all) before today. (And no, I do not work for a religious organization.)

What's funny is there are several states where birth control coverage was mandatory because of state laws. And yet somehow that wasn't a problem. Or perhaps certain people weren't aware that there are states that are already mandate its coverage.

I'm sure many mullahs of Saudi Arabia would agree with her sentiment, except with regard to Islam. They'll either wiffle and waffle something about personal responsibility and imply that you should never have sex unless you are willing to pay for it with money, children, and/or punishment from god; or they'll scream YOUR AN RACIST! I know. $300 more a year gets to stay in my pocket. 'tis awesome.

Benign ovarian cysts (and pain cause of it) + crazy irregular cycle. I went off for awhile. Went back after a going-on-9-weeks-without-a-period drawn out increasing heart attack.

Agreed on the FU to BCBS, but they all suck and this was REALLY necessary. My workplace is incredibly liberal but we aren't large enough to negotiate much on the insurance buying floor. Pay the same for BC as I did with BCBS.

Not anymore. Effin' a.

Unfortunately those twits are loud.

It's really funny - I did Catholic leadership whatnot growing up in high school. So I went to plenty of different churches.

There was always one, at MOST two, families in each suburban or upper class church who weren't using birth control. At my own church, one family had 6 or 7 kids. Everyone else had 1-2, 3 *max*.

In any case, I need to take mine for NON contraceptive reasons (that I'm less likely to have a baby is just bonus). So eff you, lady.

"So people with too many kids is A-OK as long as they're married? Even if they're on every kind of welfare under the sun? Because that's their holy expression of God's love etc.? Thanks, glad we got that straightened out."

You could slowly guide her towards this position--to see herself from the position of others.

Well of course Christianity should be protected in those countries, because it's the right religion. The others are wrong religions that shouldn't be protected and most definitely shouldn't be imposed on people as it is in some Muslim countries. And people of other religions in the US would be so much better off if they followed the teachings of her church. I tried to point out that the first amendment works both ways, protecting religion from government, but also protecting government from religion. She disagrees, the 1st amendment only protects religion from government, not the other way around.

Her view of herself from the position of others is that they should see she's right. I've tried, very hard, to get her to see the point of view of others, of women who use BC for non-medical reasons, of women who would be risking their health or even their lives if they became pregnant, of women who simply can't afford a child, etc. but it's hopeless. They should all use NFP or nothing. She's okay with the concept of trying to avoid pregnance, but only if it's done via NFP. Doing it any other way, for any reason, is wrong. I find it incredibly frustrating that she can't see that other people make other choices and that's up to them. I've told her that I don't care what the Catholic church says because I'm not Catholic. I've pointed out that I don't condemn her choices even though they're clearly not the choices I've made (childfree, planning to stay that way and very happy about it). There's no reasoning with her. She believes that all her positions and opinions are her independent thinking and they just happen to be the same as the positions as the church.

It's a complete disconnect between the various arguments. There are several, and most of them really are mutually incompatible:

1. Unemployment is at an all time high! People can't get jobs! BUT
2. Poor people should go to work and stop leeching off the government.

1. Single moms shouldn't have so many babies they can't afford! BUT
2. We're not going to help raise those babies! She should have thought of that before she got pregnant!

1. We don't want single-payer health insurance! It's infringing on our rights! BUT
2. People who don't have insurance should have thought of that before they got sick!

1. We need more cops and prisons to punish criminals! BUT
2. We don't want to pay for people not to become criminals in the first place.

And on and on and on and on....

This is the argument I've had with some of my family. If the excuse is that "paying for insurance that covers contraception goes against my religious beliefs", then what about those religions that are against transfusion, or are only into "natural healing" or whatever. Have they been unfairly persecuted for decades because of health insurance?

The usual response I get: "Well, it's not the same thing."
