"No Use for a Name (sometimes abbreviated NUFAN or No Use) was a punk rock band from San Jose, California, United States[1] formed in 1987"

Can you call it a "seminal" band when there California punk rock bands 10 years earlier?

2012-08-01 03:38:03 PM
Sucks to hear. I will have my Cali Punk playlist turned up to 11 today.

RIP

If you take the definition of seminal as "Strongly influencing later developments", then I'd say it fits.

/Google's other definition for seminal was "Of, relating to, or denoting semen"

That is an amazing record, and one of the things that actually got my wife to listen to punk. After hearing it done acoustic she gave it a chance. I think they were touring together right now as well. Very sad.

Anyone recommend an album? Never heard of them, and always liked the concept of punk, but most people just scream at things and spaz on instruments.

Incognito is really good. I guess they re-released it in 2001 but, it doesn't include their cover of Truth hits everybody.

listening to it now...

California "Pop" Punk is definately a lot more melodic than other punk, might be easier for you to get into...

One of their best followed by Keep Them Confused IMHO.

My favorite is Leche con Carne.

And my favorite song on that album is Fatal Flu.

I remember seeing them in 1995 with a bunch of other bands and yelling, "No Use for a Name because you suck!" Granted, I was 22, but that was kind of mean.

The only song I know I've heard of theirs is their cover of "Turning Japanese," which is pretty good.

Very much THIS.

I love that album. Wasn't a fan of their later work but this is still sad.
41? That's way too young.

Hard to go wrong. Just hit Pandora or Youtube or whatever and see what you like. If I had to pick just one I'd probably go with "Making Friends".

I don't like the punk music that you describe. I love stuff like Bad Religion, Offspring, AFI, NUFAN, Lagwagon, Pennywise, Millencolin, etc because while they have some songs like that, they have a lot with great melodies and meaning.

Very true. Room 19 is one of my favorite sadder songs by a punk band.

Dang. Was just listening to Leche Con Carne the other day. That acoustic work with Joey Cape was also great.

They were my first punk show. Saw them back in 99 or 2000 at the Roxy. They played with One Man Army and Pulley. It was a pretty great show.

/Sad stuff

That kinda sucks. I was kind of really burned out on skate punk when No Use blew up so I was never really into them until a few years ago. If he could read this I'd tell him thanks.

Check out "Live In A Dive". It has a good mix of songs from several of their albums.

Their old guitarist, Dave Nassie, is one of my best friends and I knew Tony (and Matt and Rory) well. This is a sad day indeed. Tony had two young daughters.

He was a pitcher in the minor leagues, also.

Another fun fact is that I rocked my god damn face off at that show. Pulley was awesome. No Use was pretty decent too.

I finally listened to the acoustic album he did with Joey Cape (I know, eight years late). That is one Hell of an album.

Great band, and they were pretty influential on the pop punk genre in the 90s.

Just listening to the acoustic album for the first time now. It's interesting. I was a huge fan of Lagwagon growing up. Fans of acoustic pop punk might want to check out Even in Blackouts featuring Jughead from Screeching Weasel and a female lead singer.
