I almost submitted this article yesterday, but with a different URL. It would have been "I-wont-hire-people-who-use-poo.html"

/I don't want to be hired by someone who is more focused on grammar than how well applicants are suited to actually doing, you know, the job

This is surprising?

There isn't exactly a shortage of candidates out there, so why would someone hire a candidate that can't communicate at an adult level?

On the face of it, my zero tolerance approach to grammar errors might seem a little unfair. After all, grammar has nothing to do with job performance, or creativity, or intelligence, right?

Wrong. If it takes someone more than 20 years to notice how to properly use "it's," then that's not a learning curve I'm comfortable with. So, even in this hyper-competitive market, I will pass on a great programmer who cannot write.

LOL! Not a sentance; so - there!

This is actually about cultural adherence to principles. They also probably wouldn't hire people who were black, foreign or Jewish if it was acceptable.

Although Jews for the most part are excellent grammarians.

I love that, but he ignores that "It's" can also be correctly used to indicate "it has", as in "Well, our company regained its mojo in the last few days, but it's been a long week, and I'm glad it's over."

Varsity usage, there.

Also, if your name is "it", "it's" correctly identifies possesion.

Depending on the job it could make sense.
But I think this is just an opportunity for someone to express the tiny power they have in a pathetic attempt to show they are better than someone else.
I call it the McDonald's management style.

I'd love to figure out a better way to conduct a technical interview.

I hate asking what amount to quiz questions.

Although I do have a good one now. Lead with the question, "How would you rate your C++(or C#, or SQL, etc) programming level". Invariably, they all respond "7 or 8." Then I ask the real question, "What sort of problem do you think a 6(or 7) would have trouble with. Then they tell me what is giving them trouble, it tells me more about their technical expertise than any large number of quiz questions will

Sometimes trying to be absolutely grammatically perfect in that regard (ending sentences with propositions) ends up making the sentence more cumbersome and harder to understand than just biting the bullet and doing it the "wrong" way.

The funny thing is that people think there's only two stances on grammar usage. There's the illiterate position that thinks it's completely useless, then there's the traditional grammar nazi who just likes to catch people out for being wrong. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of grammar is simple enough to get right, so there's no reason to not learn it. However, once you manage to keep homonyms straight and use apostrophes properly, the truly arcane stuff really doesn't matter all that much.

But yeah, if you've gone through K-12 education AND college, if you can't get its/it's, their/there/they're, effect/affect, or apostrophes correct, you're a damn moron and I wouldn't hire you either. That goes quintuple if I run a business where we actually sell written product.

Human beings manage to communicate with each other while making mistakes in almost every e-mail, instant message, fark thread, tweet, or powerpoint presentation. And we still manage to get shiat done.

Since he stated that his site writes tech manuals, then grammar is intrinsic to actually doing, you know, the job. Probably moreso than any other, you know, job.

Yet there are plenty of employed people out there who cannot type or hell even speak properly. I do business with or visit those places as little as possible (even fast food places, sorry slang might be cool with your friends, but it ends there).
