Yes, it's no secret that they're going to be outraised this time around. Sheldon Adelson and Karl Rove are going to make sure crazy amounts of money are going to be thrown Romney's way. Typically, the candidate with the most money wins. Sad, but true. Obama's team is just trying not be be outspent 2 or 3 to 1. Or more.

If Obama is terrifically outspent AND he still manages to win the election, I can only imagine what the Republicans and the right wing of the Supreme Court have cooked up for 2016.

"New rule: citizens and corporations can donate unlimited money to Republican candidates, and $5 max for all other candidates."

2012-08-01 11:38:33 AM
Obama could solve all his money problems by promising a crazy casino billionaire that the Justice Department won't look into his shady dealing with foreign governments.

Oh wait, Romney already scooped him up.

The e-mails and texts on their own don't say "desperate" to me. If you're not sending out at least one e-mail per day to your supporters, you're not maximizing your fundraising potential, especially when most of your funds are donated in small amounts across a vast swath of people.

So I guess it would make sense that Mitt's campaign wouldn't send out as many e-mails. He's fundraising mainly through a few big money donors.

He doesn't have to; most of his supporters are hooked on forwarding chain emails.

Direct, unlimited contributions to specific candidates is the next logical step. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's a suit brought before the court in a couple of years for that purpose.

It'll happen whether the GOP wins this round or not.

I think the right was caught off guard and was a little unnerved by the complete lack of control resulting from a rule allowing unlimited donations to organizations collateral to a campaign but not the campaign itself.

So yeah I think that is the next logical step.

Try to imagine the WSJ or Fox's site printing a similarly toned article about Romney were the table reversed. My guess is that it would be "Romney camp does more, with less" or something along those lines. Stupid liberal New York Times.

Seriously. I can't wait until we get this country back on track. What we need is another multimillionaire white male back in the White house. When will this country learn that the only way we can survive as a nation is to spend on defense, cut taxes for the wealthy, and keep white multimillionaires in the white house? It should be obvious by now.

Also, I think you'll find the left - the actual left - is unsatisfied with Obama because he's a conservative. No one's going to choose an ultra-conservative instead.

Last time around, people gave to Obama because Bush was in the White House and they didn't want another President who was essentially Bush.

This time around, since Obama's in the White House, they've become complacent. What they don't seem to realize is that there's a possibility that that will result in us having another President who will essentially be Bush.

2012-08-01 02:39:36 PM
What scares me about Citizens United is that if it can even make this election between Obama and Romney a close one, what will it do to local and state elections? The billionaires and corporations might lose this Presidential election but in the long term they will own everything from the grass roots up to the top. I feel fortunate that I don't have any children. This world is not going to be a nice place down the road.

I'm signed up to a couple of Conservatibe newsletters. About two thirds of the emails I get from them are asking for cash to prevent Obama from winning a second term, which will enable him to assemble his legions of communists to march across the nation paying waste to everything in their path and that the US will soon cease to exist unless I send money NOW.

The remainder of the emails are a grab bag of FW:FW:FW: newsletters, BUY GOLD HERE and investment scams.

No, Mitt Romney is attempting to portray himself as an ultra-conservative, of course that's only when he's not busy trying to portray himself as a moderate.

I routinely get fundraising emails from political campaigns, which I normally ignore. This morning, however, I got an email titled "Outspent," that began "Scott -- It's deadline day. We're down to the last few hours..."

For a brief moment, I thought I had screwed up a deadline for a no-cost extension or some such, and my students were about to lose their funding. UP YOURS, PEOPLE ASKING FOR MONEY.

So yeah, I definitely noticed a change in email solicitations, not just in number but in their tenor.

Weird. I see us being in better shape now than we were when he took office, and I don't see any coherent plans from the Repubs detailing how they plan to do better.

To speak to tfa's author's concerns, I'm guessing that the fund raising emails are written the way they were because they've paid close attention to which kinds of appeals have shaken loose the most cash, and emails like these were the most successful.

You are such a goddamn idiot.

"Obama recovered the economy, but not very well at all."
"Certain kinds of unemployment prevail under Obama!"
"If you overlook the fact that the economy hadn't finished bottoming out until Obama had been in office six months into his term, then poverty has gotten worse under Obama!"

"Mitt Romney plans to increase jobs by reducing taxes on rich people, increasing taxes on poor people, reducing regulations, by increasing trade with China, by "drill baby drill", by eliminating unions, by eliminating government jobs training programs, and by cutting government spending. Yes, each and every one of these policies has been proven to increase jobs. No really. They really have. Would we lie to you?"
