The Russian government intends to restore the military-technical support of their ships at the former military base in Cam Ranh (Vietnam)

So they're reviving their presence at a base they always officially denied having a presence at.

While visiting my brother in Hawaii, I asked him what the locals did when threatened by a hurricane.

"Put on water wings and drink beer in the street."

It made sense to me.

Vietnam is a damned interesting one....

Especially since they blue waffle between Chinese and Russian influence. For a while I thought the Soviets Russians and Chinese would ally in East Asia after the Cold War.

But this might be a new chapter. The Chinese dont like Russian bases in their backyard.

The Pentagon publishes Pravda?

I like Pravda a lot more now as a National Enquirer-style tabloid than when it was just Soviet propaganda. Pravda has the best UFO and Bigfoot coverage of any publication anywhere.

Human civilization done in 3, 2, 1

Earth time speaking, we have killed ourselves off remarkably fast.

Mother Earth quoted as saying "good riddance".

Yeah, and the Vietnamese like us, India, and everyone else in their neighborhood a lot more than they like China. China's nascient naval aggression is being countered by an international coalition of Southeast Asian navies backed by the U.S. Russia's rusty, obsolete fleet is irrelevant.

Russia has some interesting shiat, but they have such a long history of being pissy with their Eastern neighbors that this should only be full of win for the US.

I mean, even back in the 30s at Khalkin Gol (Ok it was the Japanese in China, but still.. its farking China).

On the bright side, it would be a great opportunity to have a local Russian base to totally fark with.

Imagine the bullshiat intelligence they could feed just for lulz.

Most important part of that article IMHO.

The Russian Navy could not win a fleet vs fleet engagement without nuclear weapons. .

Russia's a Eurasian country with more or less a free-enterprise economy, and a quasi-dictator running their erstwhile democracy. What's the ideological problem, again?

China is a fascist country with a free-enterprise economy heavily entangled with an authoritarian state. We were fast friends with a bunch of those in South America during the Cold War. Problem?

The only conflicts between nation-states these days are over resources, and the best way to deal with that is international court suits.

Next time, take 2 minutes to read the article before you post.

FTFA: the Pentagon spokesman George Little said that Russia had the right to enter into military agreements and relationships with other countries, as does the United States.

No fear spreading, No budget request. Just a smirk, a chuckle, and a quiet request that the Coast Guard move long range search and rescue aircraft and cutters to the east coast in order to assist when the rusted hulls of the Russian ships give out during the Atlantic crossing.

Not the same. Pravda Online is a different company, they have no relation. But the journalists who started Pravda Online once worked for a Greek company that briefly owned the rights to "the real" Pravda. Very confusing, Wikipedia told me this.

http://www.gazeta-pravda.ru/ is the "real" Pravda owned by the Russian communist party, they don't do big foot stories.

Let's face it America. Your status as a world superpower is declining. The majority of your citizens are complacent and too fat to make any changes.

Can you you imagine "regular Americans* rises up like the Syrians?

No, neither can I.

As long as it doesn't it affect you Americans personally, you don't give a shiat.

There's are some similarities in Present America that remind me of the last day of the Roman empire such as American Idol, Jersey Shores, Toddlers & Tiaras and all those "reality" shows.
It is no different than how the Romans elites keep the masses happy with "reality" shows like The Gladiators Games.

Cuba that has an American military base in Guantanamo Bay and is protesting against the deployment of new U.S. bases in Colombia, of course, wants to acquire an ally in Russia to be able to contain the United States.

*snicker*

Delusions of grandeur to be sure. Then again, delusions of grandeur is just about all the Soviet navy had going for it as well, particularly at the end when the families of naval personnel lived on board ship because they didn't have adequate housing left.

/way to blow the oil and natural gas money, Pootie...don't you have some photos to stage that make you look virile?

Technically, only one of the proposed Russian bases borders on an ocean (Seychelles). Cam Rahn sits on the South China Sea and Lourdes is an inland SIGINT site with the closest body of water being the Gulf of Mexico.

2012-08-01 05:24:02 PM
The next 20 years of military conflicts will be territorial.

UK/Argentina
China claiming all of the South China Sea because of oil and natural resources
Palestine/Israel
The Arctic where its mainly Russia & Canada vs the greedy United States

I can't see them sitting down now that Russias back in Cuba lolz

"With the full consent of the Cuban leadership, on May 11 of this year, our country has not only resumed work in the electronic center of Lourdes, but also placed the latest mobile strategic nuclear missiles "Oak" on the island. They did not want to do it the amicable way, now let them deal with this," Putin said."

Repeat from 1962?

I think that the decay is more visible with cage fighting.

I'm sure that if you take away TV, in the form of either actively removing transmission or through making it prohibitively expensive, that it could lead to revolution if other things are bad too. Not "bad" like 9% unemployment either, like "bad" as in checkpoints, stasi-style personal spying, etc.

Until then I don't think people will pay attention enough to care. Some recent surveys found that about half of Americans don't know how many Supreme Court Justices there are. I'd wager that similar numbers don't know how long Senate terms are or how many people theoretically personally represent them in the Senate and Congress...

I can't seem to find any other reference to this supposed statement outside of this article (all other references point to this one as the source) nor can I find any such thing as an "Oak" missile. The closest that I could find was a USSR missile called the "Oka" which was discontinued in accord with the IMF treaty of 1987 a few years before the USSR broke up and even if it was still around it certainly wouldn't be referred to as the "Latest" in any case.

That being said I don't think that Russia would risk doing that just because of what almost happened the last time that they tried it.

Protip: The Vietnamese hate the Chinese with a passion only encountered by former subjects of the Middle Kingdom. The only reason North Vietnam ever asked them for help was because the Americans sided with the South during the war. Ho Chi Minh was on record as saying he'd have preferred to have US help over Chinese assistance in the 1950's for that very reason.

Why should we let the Viets get all the good deals? Why not offer the Russians a lease on the closed navy base at Mare Island or Oakland NAS or some facilities at Pearl Harbor? We could use the cash infusion as well as be able to repair their ships in the same crappy way we do ours (that is why we closed the Phila Navy Yard--the quality of work on our carriers on the SLEP program was so bad that as soon as the contract was done, the navy closed the place). Let them use Philadelphia...that's fix them for sure! Never have to worry about the Russian navy in combat again!
