"The time has come for a broad-based assault against the powers that be that want to change our culture to one of men marrying men and women marrying women," said Owens, in an interview Tuesday after the launch event at the National Press Club. "I am ashamed that the first black president chose this road, a disgraceful road."

Owens has long been an opponent of gay marriage and consults with the National Organization for Marriage as a liaison to the black churches.

Earlier this year, memos obtained by The Human Rights Campaign in a Maine civil actions suit revealed that NOM aims at making gay marriage a wedge issued "between gays and blacks," according to the released confidential plans.

"The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks - two key Democratic constituencies," one NOM memo states.

When I was a kid I read a novel by Robert Heinlein called Farnham's Freehold. It was not a very good book, but it was about a white-bread family and their negro friend accidentally traveling to the far future to find a slavery-based society where the black folk are on the top. They don't consider eating the white slaves an act of cannibalism. The negro friend that travels forward with them ultimately buys into the situation.

I find that scenario only less slightly plausible than what we seem to be seeing now.

In other news, it was revealed that black fundie churches crank out much of the same homophobic, misogynistic, anti-intellectual derp that white churches do.

And this isn't the first time a black preacher(s) has taken it upon himself to discriminate against someone he disagrees with: sometime ago, an atheist was elected to the City Council in Asheville, NC. The head of the North Carolina NAACP sued to have this man removed based on an old law stating that atheists can't be elected to office in North Carolina. I'm actually shocked that the fundie wing of the GOP hasn't reached out to fundie black preachers more.

When I heard that same-sex marriage would be a part of the Democrats' platform, I was apprehensive because I figured that there would be a few groups who otherwise supported Obama that would turn away because of the issue. Didn't know who the groups would be, but it looks like this is one of them.

Really, this issue would have been better introduced in his second term rather than immediately before an election. It gains Obama few votes from undecideds, but causes a subset of his supporters to leave him. Hopefully it doesn't hurt him too much but the timing seemed unwise.

Last-Place Avoidance Syndrome. Look it up. It explains so much about why middle class and lower keep voting for candidates who only benefit the wealthy. I believe that there was even a FARK thread about it some months ago.

See also the South Park episode "The Poor Kid" (season finale of the previous season), which appears to have been at least partly satire on that subject (news of the research had been in the news shortly before that episode would've been written). Cartman was just fine with being the second poorest kid in school, so long as he had somebody poorer than him to rag on.

I get the white, southern people I went to high school with lining up in droves at Chick-Fil-a today. Most of them would (still) be fine with a similar showing against interracial marriage. But, seeing one formerly oppressed group of people now turning on a currently oppressed group of people seems insane.

This is quite possibly the most ignorant statement I've seen in the past month or so, and that's saying a lot.

Oh man, I'm getting posts on facebook that their are lines are massive for Chick-Fil-A food truck in downtown DC. The only one of two places to vote for Mondale!

Even hipsters are saying Yay to Chick-Fil-A!

There's nothing more American than denying civil liberties to other groups of people so that you can look down on someone and forget about your position in the social caste.

Headso: The_Great_Hambino: I was actually thinking about this when I walked by the Chick-Fil-a in my office building. Today is "ZOMG support FREEDOM OF SPEECH (to be a bigot) at Chick-Fil-a today, and I noticed that most of the crowd was African American.

About 50 years ago, white people were lining up to support FREEDOM OF SPEECH (to be a bigot) against African Americans. Did they all forget about that? Really?

I get the white, southern people I went to high school with lining up in droves at Chick-Fil-a today. Most of them would (still) be fine with a similar showing against interracial marriage. But, seeing one formerly oppressed group of people now turning on a currently oppressed group of people seems insane.

Do that many people even know about the chick-fil-a thing? it seems like old news on here but curious if you asked a bunch of people on the street what they'd say about it.

Yepharkabee and Santorum announced a "Support Chick-Fil-a Day" for today. Pretty much everyone who watches Fox News is at Chick-Fil-a today, along with a lot of other people just trying to get lunch and confused about the excessive amount of derp that's there today.

You do realize lesbians are gay too? You do realize that many gay men don't practice anal sex? You do realize, per capita, heterosexuals do it more often?

I suggest you seek some psychiatric help for you scatological obsession.

Not quite sure if that's real or not, but I saw an actual church marquee board today that actually got me a little angry. It said "If God doesn't punish America, Sodom and Gomorrah deserve an apology. Normally I just laugh and roll my eyes at the stupidity on those things, but this one is reaching Jerry Falwell/Pat Robinson stupidity. I would have gotten a picture but I forgot my phone. I'll see if it's still up tomorrow.

For Houston area Farkers, it's a Baptist church next to a McDonald's near the junction of U.S. 59 and FM 1314.

To the Americans who showed their support to Chick-Fil-A today by purchasing their delicious food:

Thank you for showing me that this country still believes in free speech for ALL, regardless of how poor or how rich you might be

Thank you for showing that we can and will defend the right to speaks one mind in a peaceful and orderly act of subtle but incredible power.

Thank you for showing the world that even if we don't agree with what you are saying, we will work, fight, and die for your right to say it, as thousands of previous Americans did here and around the world even for other countries.

Rarely have I been so proud to be able to say that I have the privilege and honor of being one of your fellow citizens of the United States of America.

There's a difference between trying to take away the right of Chick-Fil-A to support bigoted douchebaggery, and calling them out on supporting bigoted douchebaggery. Typical social regressive - "I get to insult, demean and oppress anyone I feel like, but how dare any of the victims fight back. They're so mean and evil and stop telling me what to do!"

Also, just so you can prepare yourself - you've lost the gay marriage debate. No one under 40 cares. So, uh, yeah... I guess you're going to have to face a lot more "progressive authoritarian fascism" in the years ahead, and lots of other nonsensical combinations of words the right-wing echo chamber has programmed you to hate too. Like when the atheist nazi communist dictatorial empty-suit is re-elected this November.

I was born gay. I never had a "Oh my god, I'm gay!" moment. I've known as long as I've been conscious and have memories.

No one made me this way. If you think that that's something that actually happens, you're a moron.
