ITA v GBR women's volleyball. Good lord...

/it's a good match, too.

MrSeabass: Gosling: And the IOC member handing out the weightlifting medals is from.... North Korea. He will be handing gold to a North Korean.

That image is going to be all over North Korean television tonight.

Yep, all three screens, and if you're lucky, one of them will be in color!

Are we making fun of NBC again? Let me know so I can join in.

AJatHP: Can someone please hand the Japanese Men's Gymnastics Team a trimmer for their armpits?

I had the same thought

Tigger: It also should make you think just how different Eton College is from the rest of the UK.

Oh I'm well aware of that.

After two rotations in the men's all-around final, Leyva is 19th in a field of 24. Orozco? Dead farking last.

NBC's gonna have a hard time spinning that one.

No, we're making fun of Best Korea. Which is kind of like making fun of NBC, but Best Korea isn't as condescending towards their TV viewing audience.

If your tournament format makes it beneficial to lose matches, then the problem is with the format.

Don't hate the playa! Hate the game!

No, really, that's what one player said in response to the disqualifications.

"Don't hate the player, hate the game," Jan Jorgensen of Denmark after losing his match in the men's singles today. "It's the fault of the BWF, it's the setup."

They'll improve some assuming they don't fark up the vault, but they'll still be way out of the medals.

Actually, North Korea has only two TV channels. Instead of a dial or something, there's a switch: flick the switch one way and you get Channel 1, flick it the other way and you get Channel 2.

It's going to be one of those cases where the final display shows first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and then the Americans just get tacked on at the bottom showing whatever dismal Lovecraftian place they wound up in.

It's 4 hours, man! There has to be something else going on that they can show. How much swimming is there today? Can they preview track and field? What about diving...have they done diving yet? Replay the US women's gymnastics? Interview Michael Phelps? Anything?

Tigger: Eton College rowing facility

Well, for rowing, they need a wide, flat, straight, calm, quiet piece of river to row on, and I'm not seeing that anywhere near London. So using Eton makes sense.

I wonder how Rio is going to try to spin itself as an awesome city and avoid the whole pesky issue of the tens of thousands living in abject poverty in the favellas and how they're treated by those not living there. It's going to take some spin that would impress the Chinese.

The Pommel Horse always seems to be the bane of US gymnastics. I didnt watch but it sounded like he didnt fall off, was wobbly, but still was judged VERY low. Oh well I guess you gotta be perfect.

Practice. They held the Pan-American Games not long ago, there was a global-warming convention they just hosted, there's the small matter of the World Cup they'll be hosting in the runup.

I'm suspecting this is a sign that CBC knows it will not be bidding for Saturday night / Stanley Cup hockey for the next contract. That's a shame.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and her overseas and dependent territories.

Not quite. Most of the overseas/dependent territories have independent Olympic teams (Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, a few others I think). Plus Northern Irish athletes are eligible to compete on Ireland's team (or Team GB, they basically have a choice).

Pairs played badly to lose. Wanted to lose so that they avoided tougher/compatriot matches in the knockout stages.

The Pommel Horse always seems to be the bane of US gymnastics. I didnt watch but it sounded like he didnt fall off, was wobbly, but still was judged VERY low. Oh well I guess you gotta be perfect.

In 2008 when they medaled they had a gymnast (Artemev) who competed in the team competition on the pommel horse, and only on the pommel horse. His sole purpose in the team event was to make sure the US had at least one score on the horse that wasn't abysmal. It worked. Artemev scored the 3rd best in the whole competition while the other two US gymnasts got a 13.750 and 12.775. The US was still last on the pommel horse, but with a high enough score that the edged out the Germans.

This year the Brits also got their bronze thanks to a pommel specialist (Louis Smith in his only routine of the night scored half a point above the second highest score of anyone else in the event -- the Brits took bronze by less than 0.2).

The interviewing reporter for the swimmers? I figured out what's wrong with her.

She asks the question, shoves the mike in the swimmer's face, then shakes her head so vigorously that she gives herself brain damage. Once you see it, you won't be able to notice anything else.

4NSpy: Can someone give me the coles notes on the badminton "scandal"?

The format of the competition was group stage, then knockouts. After a surprise loss, the top pair in the world was 2nd in group D, and would have been in the same half of the knockout bracket as the 1st place team in group A. So both of the top teams in group A tried to lose their match and finish in 2nd to avoid this.

It would make sense, her questions are so awful and blunt they make me cringe.

"Hey Michael, you did pretty farking awful winning that silver. That guy totally outtouched you and made you look like a douchenozzle. Do you think you should just pack up and go home now, or would you rather suffer the humiliating defeat of winning another 2 golds and a bronze?"

But is it tape delayed? I don't believe it happened unless it's spoon fed to me hours later with multiple commercial breaks and human interest stories injected into what might possibly be an interesting sporting event turning it into a middling and overwrought piece of garbage.

And then Costas follows it up with 5 minutes of sucking Phelps off on national TV while still asking him why he hasn't bothered to retire already? I bet if Phelps had really worked at it the entire past four years he probably would be destroying the competition still, and in four more years could be doing the same. The guy just didn't want it that badly anymore.

Either the gymnastics feed keeps freezing or these gymnasts are holding in more insane poses than I ever imagined.
