What the hell did it run into, a turkey?

/As God is my witness....

The pilot's going to be picking giblets out of his shoelaces for a month, if any of that penetrated the cockpit.

Ambivalence: What the hell did it run into, a turkey?

/As God is my witness....

We have wild turkey vultures all over where I live, and last year my neighbor hit one with his car. It wasn't quite deer-level damage, but it was impressive.

Still, that must have been one hell of a large bird to punch through the aluminum and not just glance off.

Did it hit a pterodactyl?

Geez, that looks like a 30mm cannon hit. Three feet higher and pilot would have been decapitated and copilot would be lucky to be uninjured. And surely there would have not been any panic at all if a passenger jet suddenly plummeted to the ground like it was shot down with no comms.

Exactly what the hell kind of bird is flying around Dallas with that kind of mass?

Either an eagle, a goose or Superman.

Ask the bird about that.

It was near Denver not Dallas, and if I had to guess it was probably a goose. Those fowl are everywhere.

Hmm, that's odd, I thought that would be big news. On Fark there seems to be an absence of an ornithological piece. A headline regarding mass awareness of a certain avian variety.

Oh, have you Farkers not heard? It was my understanding that everyone had heard.

did it hit one of these?

2012-07-31 09:18:32 PM
This was during LANDING, not take-off.

1/2 m*v^2 bay-bee. Takeoffs occur at 90 knots, landings occur at 180 knots. The speed of the plane is four times more important than the size of the bird.

2012-07-31 09:19:31 PM
The fact that it landed with no problem after that is a testament to just how tough the 737 is.

2012-07-31 09:19:43 PM
Must've been a flying pig to do that much damage.

Don't worry they will fix the plane it will be back in service with all the other 737's, fix the bird? not so much
since its in cattle car section from the looks of it.

Terrorist bird.

Jesus Christ, you would think that the skin would be tougher. Granted, 180 knots is fast, and that is usually a large jets approach speed, but damn, you would think that the bird would just glance off. Wonder what kind of bird it was? And i wonder what a bird strike would do to my cessna 182 on landing approach? Meh, i would probably just chum him up in the prop.

737s are somehow tougher than other commercial aircraft?

FYI, folks, this thing only damaged the radome on the front, which is made of fiberglass I believe. It's just the shell that goes over the radar, but is designed not to attenuate the signal at all. The bird did not necessarily penetrate any of the pressurized cabin or damage the aluminum airframe itself.

2012-07-31 09:40:28 PM
I've hit plenty of birds with my car, and even once on a bike. I've never sustained damage like that.

Wow.

I've seen the nose of a Dash8 ripped open from hitting a bald eagle on approach. Apparently after landing, the pilot radioed dispatch to say he "thinks he hit a moose up there."
