Nope. Nevermind that the bottom 10% of each of the fields cited pays $10/hour. In a competitive market.

It's always fun watching a writer whose editor is on her ass to turn something in NOW try to come up with meaningful topics.

None of that was surprising in the least bit. Especially since only the top 10% of the workers make that wage.

Did you know that boat captains, who are in charge of million dollar vessels and have a crew of people whose lives are in his hands, makes six figures??!?!? OMG!!!!

The guy who cleans Obamas toilet makes six figures. Are we really shocked by this?

jjorsett: It's always fun watching a writer whose editor is on her ass to turn something in NOW try to come up with meaningful topics.

That is one major problem with the news media today. If there isn't any actual news they just make some shiat up and call it news. If CNN would stop spending 12 hours a day talking about pointless celebrity crap and having a bunch of pundits yelling at each other but not actually saying anything they could put on some documentaries and I'm guessing their ratings would go up.

I think what they're showing is that if 10% make 6 figures on average, then there is a career path towards it and it's likely someone will get there once they have X years of experience, unlike garbage man or administrative assistant where you start at minimum wage and max out at $40K.

This scene is intense.

The father, soon to retire, is gazing out the window in despair. For 36 years he has glanced out of that window and seen many dreams collapse around him. Is it now his turn?
His legacy is in jeopardy, and he only has his son to rely on now.
This woman... she doesn't understand. He came to this country with nothing; to her it's just business. "Those are the old ways," she would say, "the world doesn't work that way any more."

Tell that to his son.
Look at the him. His eyes burn with intensity, striving to meet dad's expectations. The business will not fall, it can't fall.

"You... you biatch. Look at this paper. Do you see this? DO YOU SEE WHAT I'M POINTING AT?"
"But I thought..."
"DO YOU NOT SEE WHAT I AM POINTING AT?"

I am a tax preparer. I had a client walk in one day, years ago, and he smelled bad. I mean, this man was stinky. Something had died in his beard. He threw a sopping wet W-2 onto my desk.

"That's all I got," he told me. I started to enter his information. Then I stopped. My brain told me there was something wrong with that W-2; the number in box 1 was way too big. I glanced at the stinky geezer sitting across my desk and asked him, "excuse me, sir, what do you do?"

He said, "I'm the tugboat cap'n." Not a tugboat captain; the tugboat captain. And the "t" in captain is silent.

So, yes, you can earn good money doing some disgusting jobs.

It' is obvious that the stack of papers the woman is holding is a metaphor for the father's withering legacy. The son's finger represents his penis, poised to fark up that legacy.

I started out on a dairy farm in PA. Now I'm a SysAdmin keeping a data center running for a small web development group, and yes, I make six figures.

It shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone that the top tier of talent in any field (and I do not necessarily place myself anywhere near the top tier of talent) makes more money than the bottom tier.

What also should not come as any surprise (to anyone outside of Forbes magazine, that is) is that someone who has worked long and hard to develop expertise and skills can prosper *without* being an MBA, a doctor, or a lawyer. No offense to doctors and lawyers - the best in those fields also put in their blood, sweat, and tears to develop their skills and their careers, and they have my respect - those of us outside of the so-called 'professional' jobs have something to contribute to the world, too. Once in a while, some them even get some recognition and/or respect. (From the self-blinkered idiots like the ones at Forbes, that is, who seem amazed that anyone would pay some techno-peasant anything resembling a living wage, no matter how vital their services are.)

I have my self-respect, and the respect of my employers and my peers. I do not need Forbes to notice my profession to provide my sense of self-worth.

One of the greatest crimes of this society is the wage scales paid to corporate executives, so-called 'celebrities', and 'athletes', as compared to teachers, police, firefighters, engineers, paramedics, etc., etc.

So basically, if you're in the top 10% of many fields, you can make over 100k? If you are making that much, you likely live in an area where a small condo starts at $350k or more, old, tiny homes start at $450k and other costs of living are higher than average as well. Sounds like that salary could go pretty quick, especially if you want to put kids through college and retire someday.

/I fully expect that by the time I reach retirement age, a person can be a millionaire without being well off.

Close, right now I usually work 60 hours a week (and I make more than $30k, though still 5 figures) because I took a salaried position and it's turned out to be more work than I anticipated. I have high personal standards for what I consider acceptable work and I'm unwilling to compromise them just so I can spend a few more hours at home watching TV. (I'm married but we don't have any children)

My current employer is a small but growing firm, I'm hoping my work ethic will be noticed but I don't plan to work like this forever, nor do I do it anonymously.

TL;DR

I'm a gullible idiot that is willing to be taken advantage of.

At least half of those are commission or piece work, which if you have any experience in them at all, you know that the top 10% make 100x as much as the bottom 10% and making money and the right connections is damn hard work. Part of that comes from lying, cheating, and stealing their way to the top, but that's part of the business; it's not a place for ethical employees. Farmers and Ranchers? You mean people who own vast tracts of land and sell their products and lease the remainder - in other words, small business owners - can make a lot of money? You don't say.

Database administrators is surprising?

I'm sure you've heard of the expression "getting the shaft" or "getting shafted". Well, it's a really super dangerous job. A century ago desperate but not well trained people would get the work and not a lot of them survived, Now, well trained people get the work and their unions make sure they're certified to do that work, the city inspectors and the inspectors of the inspectors also make sure they can do the job. It's still dangerous work but the people who do it get paid for their training and they get hazard pay. Being fearless helps a lot.

What do you mean, good work? It sounds like you all will just do and say anything for a paycheck. You're the type of people who write articles for mindless advertising and political operations. Sure, anyone can sell their soul for a paycheck. But not everyone gives a damn about that type of work. Go work for a non profit that actually does something useful in life.

None of those were really that surprising. Many film editors make well over $250,000 (and millions if they work on blockbuster movies). A film editor making $100,000 is a bad film editor.

Interestingly, Forbes seems to have completely skipped the legion of federal employees who all command enormous salaries in and around Washington D.C. as well as those working for state and local governments throughout the nation. I'm fairly sure there are a significant number of federal employees making six figures and probably a surprisingly high number of other government officials as well. Then you add the post office officials, mass transit officials and you get more.

I'm talking about actual official salaries, of course. Graft is never officially counted.

Lobbyists can simply DIAF.

One of the greatest crimes of this society is the wage scales paid to corporate executives, so-called 'celebrities', and 'athletes', as compared to teachers, police, firefighters, engineers, paramedics, etc., etc.

Just had some guy shoot up a movie theater, some football coach rape a bunch of young children and 50 people murdered in Chicago last month but overpaying a celebrity, athlete or corp executive is one of the greatest crimes in society. Got it.

My neighbor is a driver for UPS. He retires next year at 55 and will receive $3500 a month for the rest of his life on top of whatever part time job he picks up. I'm sure he currently makes VERY close to 6 figures.

Bullshiat.

According to the department, starting salaries are $69,912 to $98,088 before overtime, shift differentials, etc. That's already more than your supposed average.

My number comes from Ignacio De La Fuente in 2010, so it's presumably even higher now.

Check the the Mercury News or the Controller's Officer to confirm. FYI, the highest paid OPD officer earned $313,414 last year while the highest paid Sergeant earned $364,475.

limeyfellow: towatchoverme: RealityChuck: That figure for writers and authors is ridiculous. The median earnings for an author from writing is less than $5000 a year. Maybe 50 writers make six figures or more, but the idea that writers make a lot of money is absurd.

Define "writers."

Many ad copy writers, technical writers, speechwriters, freelance communications experts, PR flaks and newspaper columnists make over six figures.

That's one of the reasons I chuckle so heartily at the Fark "English major/fries with that" cliché. In my experience, a good writer can almost always find a way to make north of 100k.

Unless, of course, they're out to write the Great American Novel and create "AHHHHT."

Those guys eat a lot of ramen noodles.

This is however the vast minority of writers. Most are part time at best, and looking for anything. Many more spend their time writing their million dollar book at Starbucks while collecting the unemployment check.

How much does the executive make? Probably a high number. Obviously they want to attract a talented person as support staff. Being a secretary, excuse me, assistant, is not automatically an easy job. You aren't just answering phones and using the type writer. It isn't 1950 anymore

Defensive? Everything I've said is a documented fact. The average Oakland Police Officer received $188,000 in compensation in 2010 according to Vice Mayor De La Fuente, as reported in many papers without being challenged by OPOA. If you knew anything about his or my history, you wouldn't call either of us anti-union. It's just the farking truth. I never said it was base salary, but it is what they earn.

Check out the current MOU that governs OPD pay. The lowest possible rate an OPD officer can earn is far more than your "average" number.

Why, Officer, did you make up a completely bogus "average" number that is an obvious lie?

And if I disobey your order to stop posting, will some of your buddies come by to give me a beat down or kill me for contempt of Cop?

Non profit = good.
Politics/advertising = bad.

Poverty = good.
Paycheck = bad.

That about cover it? Man, i wish i had such a simple and certain view of the world. But, from where i sit, there's very little virtue - artistic or otherwise - in toiling away in poverty on yet another crappy vampire/sword and sorcery/roman a clef university novel at a coffee shop like so many of my friends have done. There may also be very little virtue in working for some obscure little not-for-profit that pays its staff like crap, forces them to work long hours and does a dubious amount of good while blowing most of their budget in expensive television buys (in fact an acquaintance of mine owns a production company which provides exactly that service to the sector - i guarantee you have seen his work).

But you go ahead and persist in the belief that poverty is a virtue, and earning money is selling out. I'll be over here, shopping for a new car.

Half of these fields are oversaturated by recent college grads thousands of dollars in debt who work as waitstaff while desperately trying to break into one of these fields (especially the writer and video editor positions). The only way Loan Officers make that kind of money is if they get a commission, and the types that get paid that well are so ultra-competative, overworked, and morally dubious.

Heh... I got drunk and bought a MIG welder the other day. *sighs* I have no idea how to use it. I can stick weld a bit, enough to make two things stick together. It's gasless and only regular house current but the goal is to simply do simple exhaust and body work with it. Well, that was my plan at any rate. A buddy needed the money. I suppose he'll need some more at some point so I'll have him give me some lessons.

Most of these jobs are located in areas where 6 figures is laughable at best.

Remember, there are places where *forklift* operators make 6 figures. -I drove one of those before I had a license to drive a car.
