No.

You own your house, but if you burn it down it is a crime. You own your dog, but you can't shoot it in the head when you get sick of it pooping on the rug. So no, you can't force your dog to fight because there are laws against that too.

So right out the gate your analogy is bad, and you should feel bad for attempting it.

Unfortunately, King is a longtime advocate for legalizing dogfighting, cockfighting, and other forms of animal torture. Most recently, he fought legislation that would make it illegal to bring a child to an animal fight. He has also set aside his love for states' rights in order to forbid localities from enacting anti-animal torture standards.

I hate you, Steve King.

Rights and protections are not a zero-sum game you idiot. You want to outlaw boxing or wrestling or some bloodsport which is as brutal in training, control, and combat as dogfighting? Apropos of absolutely nothing, the discussion oif the legality of burning down your own house reminds me of the case of Henry David Thoreau. We all know how Thoreau moved two miles from home and built a cabin in the woods where his mom could conveniently drop off his dinner, because, as he put it, "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." However, that explanation omits the fact that he and a friend had been horsing around and accidently set a fire that burned down 300 acres of town land in Walden Woods. Essentially Thoroeau was persona non grata in Concord for a while, and he thought it best to set up housekeeping elsewhere.

The more you know...

2012-07-31 07:06:53 PM
I'd like to see him go through that scene in the last vignette of "Tales From The Crypt" where the warden of an old folk's home had to run the gauntlet of razor blades only to meet up with his ever hungry pet dog who has been fed pepper and such so that he can't smell the odor of his master.

Steve King is a complete scumbag.

"If man is not to stifle human feelings, he must practice kindness to animals, for He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." -Immanuel Kant

"Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human life". ~ Albert Schweitzer

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated" ~Gandhi

"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."-Francis of Assisi

"Animals have done us no harm and they have no power of resistance....There is something so very dreadful...in tormenting those who have never harmed us, who cannot defend themselves, who are utterly in our power."-Cardinal John Henry Newman

"As long as man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower livings beings, he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love."-Pythagoras

"Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: we are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men."-Leonardo da Vinci

"Moral progress has consisted in the main of protest against cruel customs, and of attempts to enlarge human sympathy."-Bertrand Russel

"The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality."-Arthur Shopenhauer

Actually, dogs aren't people. They're better creatures, and often don't kill other dogs. I mean, they can inflict grievous injury and death, and be trained to finish it, but it's rare. That's why Michael Vick is so evil. He killed the dogs that lost.

Sure, large swaths of the country are racist. But is there really enough people who enjoy seeing dogs fight other dogs to warranty pandering to that demographic? It seems so... forced and awkward.

Dumb hillbillies love to kill and torture animals. It fits right into the inbred, uneducated, buck-toothed demographic of brainless hicks he's courting.

Really? Are there that many hillbillies in his district? That seems... stunning. Not doubting you, just... stunned. Seems like a very risky thing to like, "dogs forced to kill other dogs", his district must be disgusting and terrible.

the hillbillies are mostly democrats and there aren't very many. in fact, quite often, there is literally no one else on the ballot except republicans out here although the democrats occasionally offer up a token for slaughter with almost no funds. I sure hope king gets his ass handed to him by christie vilsack this year but i worked for the state under her husband and found his administration...more than slightly schmuckish.

once again, it is the rich dutch reformed farmers from the northwest bankrolling steve-o. you know...those people who moved to either south africa or iowa. they are an odious bunch of yahoos.

It's not that hard, Steve-o. Humans volunteer to fight each other, and they get paid to do it. Dogs are forced to fight and their "payment" is years of abuse, neglect, and torture. He needs to watch some Animal Cops.

So feel free to add that to the list of things Republicans are for.

Steve King has no business living in this country, much less representing its citizenry. This is the guy that spouted this garbage out of his fool mouth:

"I don't want to disparage anyone because of their race, their ethnicity, their name - whatever their religion their father might have been," I'll just say this: When you think about the optics of a Barack Obama potentially getting elected President of the United States -- I mean, what does this look like to the rest of the world? What does it look like to the world of Islam? I will tell you that, if he is elected president, then the radical Islamists, the al-Qaida, the radical Islamists and their supporters, will be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11 because they will declare victory in this War on Terror. Additionally, his middle name (Hussein) does matter. It matters because they read a meaning into that in the rest of the world...If he were strong on national defense and said 'I'm going to go over there and we're going to fight and we're going to win, we'll come home with a victory,' that's different. But that's not what he said. They will be dancing in the streets if he's elected president. That has a chilling aspect on how difficult it will be to ever win this Global War on Terror."

That kinda explains it. South Africa was known for being a very backwards country culturally because of the influence the Dutch reformed folks had on the Apartheid-era governement there.

For example, they didn't have TV until the 1970's while much poorer countries to the north of them got TV earlier.

Adding to this, because why not: Abused fighting and bait dogs are often given away to unwitting families when they've reached the end of their "Usefulness," they breed for natural aggression that wouldn't exist otherwise, and they rarely (if ever) fence their dogs. I used to work in animal control and every single dog that attacked a person had been owned at some point by a fighter or abuser.

because around about the time we stopped hanging kids for pick-pocketing we recognized a legal difference between inanimate objects and living creatures we owned as property and recognized that society had a right to set minimum standards of decency for how we treat living property (and limit the thickness of the rod you beat your wife with)

I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't something seriously psychologically wrong with Rep King, the kind of wrong you find in the DSM under the disorders ending in -path

Steve King is a piece of shiat.

A good rule of thumb is to stay the hell out of western Iowa. I live in Iowa, I've lived here my whole life, and western Iowa is pretty evil. Full of small-minded conservatives, yeah, but there's also just an evil *vibe* out there. It really does feel like 33% of the population are serial killers.

2012-07-31 08:30:09 PM
African-Americans? Yeah, we lost them to the southern strategy 40 years ago. It's ok. We can do without them.

Hispanics? They're conservative but our base hates them, calls them wetbacks and illegals. Whatever. We can do without them.

Jews, Muslims and other non-Christians? Small minority. Sure they vote in overwhelming numbers compared to the general population, but they don't have Jesus in their hearts so we can do without them.

Gays? Women? People who live in big cities? Sinners all of them. Their America isn't the nation we love. We can do without them.

Dog owners? Animal lovers? Probably all vegetarian liberal nuts already so there is no point in worrying about their votes. We can do fine without them.

That would be a great bit of comeuppance for the Iowa GOP. They've spent the last 15 years doing everything they can to drive young and/or educated people out of this state, and to prevent any innovative businesses from setting up shop. In return, their most right-wing stronghold was merged into areas where people don't receive all of their news from Fox News or a church bulletin. Hopefully all the college students get involved this year - I don't want to see this election result in anything less than utter humiliation for King and his disciples.

But abuse a dog, and HOLY fark!, do they get outraged.

Sure, it's impossible to be pissed off about two different things. I remember when I set my last dog on fire, he's all running around, "You broke the contract between man and dog!" and I'm like, "Sorry, I can't care about you anymore. During a tele-townhall late last week, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) fielded a question about his opposition to animal rights and recently introduced legislation that would undermine local standards preventing animal torture. "It's wrong to rate animals above human beings," he told the questioner.

Why is it morons like him always seem to make the idiotic leap in logic that - somehow magically - if you want some creature to simply not be forced to suffer needlessly then that means you are somehow valuing their lives above human lives? It's almost as if it's not just a small penis he's trying to overcompensate for, but actually an utter lack of basic human decency.

As an Iowan (and sadly yes, this psychotic dickbag is from my home district), the only explananation I can offer is this:

Back in 2002, then-Congressman Greg Ganske decided to make a play for Senator Tom Harkin's seat (but he would have to not run for re-election to Congress in order to do so). Oddly enough, in spite of the holocaust that the Democrats suffered that election, Harkin not only beat Ganske, but did so in a landslide.

In the vacuum left during the media attention of the Harkin-Ganske battle, along sneaks in this skeevy little punk from the IA legislature and wins Ganske's old slot.

Since that time, King has never authored one single bill of legislation (which might be a blessing, considerring the horrid views he has) nor has he ever accepted a challenge to a debate during any elections since.

And King knows that the key to his continuing career is to keep his name in the news, regardless of how disgusting or outrageous his comments are. The secret of winning an election isn't about how qualified you are, but how deeply implanted your name is in the average voters' psyche. Well-known creep will clobber unknown good guy every time.

Add to the fact that the IA Democratic Party is a co-conspirator to helping King hold onto power. Election after election, they put up some unknown creampuff with no working campaign budget for King to utterly obliterate.

In short, King is in office not because he has plenty of voters who support him. It's that the IA Demo Party refuses to provide a vigorous challenge to his reign of terror.

You own a dog (like a woman). You don't need consent.

I can destroy my property without breaking the law. Why can't I use my property to fight another person's property?

Animals are a bit more advanced than a table.

clkeagle: That would be a great bit of comeuppance for the Iowa GOP. They've spent the last 15 years doing everything they can to drive young and/or educated people out of this state, and to prevent any innovative businesses from setting up shop.

Remember when Iowa was top ranked in education?

I picture Bane having a conversation with Douchenozzle King

Mr King, you must be punished. There will be torture but not of the body, instead the mind. You will watch as I give your family hope that they can fight their way out of a pit of hungry wolves. You will watch them kill each other in an attempt to save themselves from being savagely eaten. Only when your lineage is no more, then you have my permission to die.

Why can't we make dogs fight to the death?

Wow, that's really one of those "if you have to ask" questions, innit?

Okay what did he actually say?

KING: When the legislation that passed in the farm bill that says that it's a federal crime to watch animals fight or to induce someone else to watch an animal fight but it's not a federal crime to induce somebody to watch people fighting, there's something wrong with the priorities of people that think like that.

Two things.

First, aside being a horribly inapt analogy (consent/to the death !=TKO)) that's really more an argument against sports like boxing and MMA than an argument for animal blood sports to the death.

Second, there's something wrong with Steven King.

Seriously, that boy aint right in the head.

There are people in Texas who have been trying for years to get cock fighting banned. They've been unsuccessful because:

1. Doan want the gubmint telling what to do, i have freedoms
2. People opposed to cock fighting don't understand rural life.

Cockfighting is illegal in Texas. Has been for a long time.
In fact, it's illegal in all 50 states.

That *is* sad.

Included on the list of things that also make me sad are the Iowa Dems who can't seem to find and fund a credible candidate to crush this crazy cretin.

What a fighting dog might look like

Sergeant Stubby, was the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be promoted to sergeant through combat.

I don't condone dog fighting, but I've never had an issue with dogs being used by police or other armed forced. Now that I'm thinking about it, that might be hypocritical on my part (if you were to take the "consent" angle against dog fighting). In reality, I just wanted to share the Sergeant Stubby link.

realmolo: Steve King is a piece of shiat.

Great, I'm going out there for the weekend.

themindiswatching: No. For example, you'll get arrested for arson if you burn your own house down, even if you don't have homeowner's insurance.

gilgigamesh: You own your house, but if you burn it down it is a crime...
So right out the gate your analogy is bad, and you should feel bad for attempting it.

Right. You can't burn your house down, but that's only because you might accidentally burn down the whole neighborhood. You can, however, tear your house down if you're so inclined. I'm not trying to defend dogfighting, nor am I really sure what arson has to do with the argument at hand, but if you're going to denigrate other people's analogies, you shouldn't make terrible ones yourselves.

War dogs often breed extremely strong attachments to their units/handlers. Those guys often think of their dog as a team mate, not a tool. Just clarifying the above post's good point. Sgt. Stubby was a badass and would happily protect Steve King from a minefield. Animals can be very good friends even to the worst humans.

Great_Milenko: I've actually wondered this myself. People will step over homeless people in the street, spew venom at welfare recipients, and demand capital punishment for any number of non-capital offenses. They condone war, torture, and ignore the plight of refugees. Homeless? Tough. No insurance? Should have thought of that before you got sick.

But abuse a dog, and HOLY fark!, do they get outraged.

I want to make sure I have this right... you are for dog fighting, right? I just want to make sure that I understand you correctly. The Great Milenko believes that dog fighting is okay.

I agree with you, but my ultimate point was, "can the war dogs consent to being a solider any more than a dog-fighting dog can?" To me, the consent argument just doesn't hold water (unless you are against all forms of animal labor and vegan). I think it ultimately boils down to an issue of respect and humane treatment. We may use animals for food, war, and labor; but we should treat them with dignity and respect while doing it. In the case of food, that involves things like free range products, and in labor maybe not overworking them and given them proper shelter and nutrition. I'm not sure where that leaves my feelings on animal testing, but at some point you have to weigh the pros and cons.

Yeah, but try actually getting anything done about people cockfighting. The neighbors on the other side of my backyard fence were training fighting cocks in their backyard. All day every day, the roosters crowed. Big fighting roosters, and the tiny training roosters the big ones tore apart. The chicken-coop smell was nauseating. I called animal control, the cops, the sheriff's office, the zoning board, and finally the local media. Not one single agency showed the slightest interest in what was going on.

My husband went to their house, knocked on the door, and told the man who answered that the roosters had better be gone by the time he came home from work. They were.

I always root for the bull. I have no sympathy for people who get injured or killed in bullfights, running of the bulls, rodeos, and other such livestock teasing events.

Steve King is the perfect representative for his Congressional District.

F*ck you.

What, Western Iowa has the meth capital of the country (Sioux City), a bunch of bible thumpers in the rural areas, and the floodplain part of Councitucky is like a redneck version of East St. Louis - always got a laugh at having to drive by 5 adult establishments to get to the grocery store. My favorite was the starlight hotel across the street from the razzle dazzle.

How Mike Gronstal keeps getting elected to the state senate out of that district still boggles the mind.

Wow. Sounds like you've been nowhere near the place at all and just pulled out some random establishments from Google maps.

Shall we talk about your beloved OmaHell perhaps, where the city is sinking deep in the red because it was strongarmed by the College World Series to build an expensive new stadium that it couldn't afford? How OmaHell is the epicenter of right-wing extremism in the midwest?

Maybe I could mention that Omaha is where Enron came from.

Or, how about the fact that North Omaha is one part blacksploitation movie and one half Thunderdome.

Or, maybe you're just jealous that most Nebraskans are going over to Iowa now because of the added taxes that OmaHell mayor Suttle has been imposing because of the severe budget shortfall (again, unnecessary stadium)?

Or how the state of Nebraska is suing for the right to execute it's convicts using drugs meant for animals (since the pharmaceutical firm that used to make their Magic Needle Juice for humans ceased production) and is even being sued by one firm in India for buying drugs from them under false pretenses. It's no Texas, but Nebraska loves to kill it's share of brown people whenever it can find an excuse.

Or what the hey, maybe I could just go right for the throat and drop some mention about the Dirty Little Secret Past about OmaHell involving a certain S&L (Franklin Savings and Loan), the republican party of the late 80's, a preteen prostitute ring, Boys Town, late night "boy-swapping parties" involving many of OmaHell's elite, and several former victim whistleblowers who .........ahem........"had a little accident". You know, stuff that would make Jerry Sandusky wince.

But nahhhh. You go ahead and have your little illusion about OmaHell being the Garden side of Eden.

That's a nice rant and all, but really barking up the wrong tree. I've been in Des Moines for awhile now. (and I went to high school at North, so it's not like I'm going to disagree with anything you say about that part of town).

But seriously, Counciltucky's a craphole until you get into the actual Bluffs. The casino money that's funneled into the Iowa West Foundation helps, but polishing a turd doesn't change the fact that it's still a turd.
