yup - that was Limbaugh's theme for his opening 20 min rant - that Romney is winning, that what Romney is saying is what 'every real amurikan' believes is true.

I honestly don't know if I should laugh or cry.

You mean he did that to impress Americans who would vote for Romney anyway...because their only other option would be to vote for "nazi-socialist Kenyan antichrist President Obama" which would never happen? And in the meantime he accepted alienating less conservative swing voters, who would actually matter, with his behavior?

Doesn't sound like a good strategy to me.

On the derptastic right, quite a few of them are actually saying they're only voting local elections

Romney should be attracting independents at this point, if he's still trying to convince the base he's in trouble.

Look, the Republicans knew 2012 was a wash. They let Mitt have his "turn" just like McCain. Meanwhile the newer, more obedient models can be market tested, and while we're not looking, the state leges get filled with more crazy people that can bubble to the top.

shiat, Texas is still arguing over the 2010 census and redistricting.

This has all been one very expensive, sometimes entertaining, sideshow. The real shiat is on the local level and the big money consolidations thanks to the farkers of Citizens United.

I'm beginning to wonder if these alleged "gaffes" are really just carefully scripted to pander to the far right. It's not really a secret that teabaggers aren't exactly in Romney's camp. And anything he can say to appeal to their narrow world view can't hurt.

The thing that kills me is that NONE of the people who I know who claim to support Romney can articulate much in the way of why they think Romney is a good choice. Almost all of it centers around getting Obama out of office because Obama's policies are (among other things) driving us into the poorhouse.

Sure it can. It can drive up enthusiasm among his opponents. Think of people who are politically involved now specifically because of the recent war on women.

On the flip side, if the people who react positively to this crap aren't already convinced, nothing he says will do the trick.

Titt Romney (a British friend of mine took to calling him that after his rousing soujourn to England) is a human windsock. He says what he says because it appeals in that moment, to the people he's talking to. When he was in MA, he was the New England Republican, which is basically a Democrat that leans center-right. Now that he's running for the Big Chair, he's the Fundie Dream, even though they hate Mormons and don't trust him as far as they could throw him, wishing instead someone like Santorum or Bachmann had got the nomination.

So yeah, he's saying this shiat because the people he's pandering to believe it with all their pea-pickin' little hearts. What he doesn't understand, and what Barack Obama had to learn, was the same thing Bill Clinton figured out; you campaign from the left (or right), but you govern from the center. Mitt Romney is physically and mentally incapable of doing that, because it would require having to work with the Democrats, which he's loathe to do, and he'd lose any support from the electorate he'd gained through winning the election. Also, it would require him to lock down definitive stances on things, and as we've seen, he can't do that either.

The author of that article doesn't know what prediction models are. He cites a bunch of individual indicators that seem bad out of context, but he doesn't do what Nate Silver does, which is combine all of the information into an ACTUAL statistical model that minimizes the noise and accounts for almost everything.

And when you account for almost everything, Obama becomes a slight favorite.

It's not that.

He bet Randolph and Mortimer a dollar that he'd be able to say something so window-lickingly assdiculous that even the teabaggers and Megyn Kelly would say "Ok, that's it. I'm out. Where's that 'Lyndon LaRouche and You: Besties for a Rubble-Laden America!' pamphlet?"

Although this is, in fact, the case.

It's not all racism. The people who identify with the Republicans have been completely brainwashed by Fox News to believe that anyone with a D after their name is evil. They believe this no matter what the D actually does and how it affects them personally versus what happens to their lives and country when the Republicans get in power.

It is baffling and sad.

Also, the racism.

Of course, the Pudding King completely missed the minor detail that, if this is true, it just makes Romney look even dumber. Accidentally throwing the election via honest stupidity is one thing; accidentally throwing the election via calculated stupidity designed to gain half as many votes as he's going to end up losing because of it? Hurr.

The sooner the better. It's not like it's going to matter. He now believes that Obama is still going to destroy America and take all of our guns, but Obama was clever and he decided to do those two things in his second term instead of his first in an effort to fool all of us. But HE isn't fooled. No sir.

And when Obama doesn't destroy America and take our guns from us in the second term, he will believe that the GOP stopped him from doing so, and that's why he'll be voting Republican in 2016. To reward them for their diligence against the liberal horde.

But then again, he might wise up. He might come to the conclusion that the Republican Party is just completely bonkers and will stop thinking those ridiculous things. It happened to me.

You should check out The Age of American Unreason by Susan Jacoby. It's one of the most depressing books I've ever read, but it's a phenomenal read nonetheless.

Wasn't it just a couple of months when Texas was actually trying to ban critical thinking as part of school curriculum?

Nah, that was just a plank in the Texas Republican Party platform. It's still in there, AFAIK.

Yes, it is. The platform is official and binding, so they can't remove it until 2016. That's going to leave a mark.

/I say 2024 is when Texas starts to turn blue from pissing off the Hispanics

Calmamity: Lando Lincoln: Some Bass Playing Guy: The thing that kills me is that NONE of the people who I know who claim to support Romney can articulate much in the way of why they think Romney is a good choice.

Because if they say, "Look, Obama is just a bad President in my opinion and I want him gone and I don't care who replaces him as long as it's a Republican" will make them sound like morons, and they know it.

It is about the same mentality as racism....some bigotry and some blanket-statements about opponents. Frankly, whether it is bigotry against black people or democrats, it is still the same narrow-minded mentality.

Well, this is the party that help select Palin to be VP last time; you know, to ensure that their +16 vote count over Obama in Oklahoma would become +40. The US is the only country in the world where you can start by saying "Well, I don't anything about (insert subject here)..." and proceed to comment on that subject and you would have more credibility than starting with "I studied this subject" or "I have a degree on this subject" or "I wrote a book on this subject". The latter intros will just get you ignored before you state your position.

The thing that kills me is that NONE of the people who I know who claim to support Romney can articulate much in the way of why they think Romney is a good choice. Almost all of it centers around getting Obama out of office because Obama's policies are (among other things) driving us into the poorhouse.

But if you ask what's so different, you get weird answers about how not to pay attention to what Romney has actually done in the past but to what he says he'll do. These are not informed voters, they're worse than uninformed voters because they have zero priorities, zero convictions, zero plans for this country beyond 'my team has to win'.

This is the dark side of straight ticket voters, as long as their 'team' wins, it doesn't matter what their team does or does not do in office. It just matters that their 'team' wins.

2012-07-31 07:48:38 PM

Coco LaFemme: Titt Romney (a British friend of mine took to calling him that after his rousing soujourn to England) is a human windsock.

Your British friend is so on the money it hurts.

As for definitive stances, that's where looking at what a person does over what a person says matters. It used to be that simple. But folks have a way of denying what is in front of their eyes. A great many of the folks who do so with Romney tell themselves that they'll hold his feet to the fire after he's elected. Fat fking chance. What's insulting, though, is not what Romney has done in the past... it's that, like Peter, he's willing to deny, deny, deny!

A real leader would say 'well, yeah, and this is why and this is why its great and this is the direction the party should go in'. But who knows if Romney even believed all that shiat he did while he was governor? Maybe he was bullshiatting, saying what folks wanted to hear, doing what folks wanted him to do because that was what was going to be popular, even then.

I'll be the only thing he believes in is that he has to live up to whatever bullshiat Mormon prophecies have been whispered in his ear all this time. And even then, does he even really want the job, or is it just resume padding for a dude like him?

The sad thing about this media dodge is that Romney is this clever so he can win the Base that's forced to vote for him. Yeah, he's so cunning, destroying his chances with the moderates only to endear himself against the guy that NO REPUBLICAN WOULD VOTE FOR ANYWAY.

The sad thing about propaganda is that you hit a point where you can't return and have to play it straight-faced. Even when it's incredibly stupid and even makes the Base flinch for an instant, you have to milk it for everything that it's worth. That's why we got the big media push today about how Obama is in trouble because...um...and Romney's foreign trip push is completely ignored. At this point, the Republicans are running scared because they know Romney does not have it at this point to be in the running. He's a dead duck already, and he was their best shot.

And the scary thing is, with this much hatred, it's hard to see the Republicans being able to spin their own base when Obama wins a second term. The Republicans will all be seen as failures, and 2014 will be a bloodbath for them. There's no way to rally this much anger and hatred and suddenly back out of it.

What kills me, and by that I mean laughter out loud, is how willingly these same folks put anti-0bama bumper stickers above their truck nutz. I saw a little Toyota Tacoma today with a bumper sticker on it. There was an image of Obama with the "O" symbol. The text read "Does this ass make my truck look big?"

Um, no bro, you're still driving a small foreign truck.

Omigod. Do you live in my neighborhood? Only mine is the old, old dude with the handicap placard and the king supercab with anti-Obama stickers trashing up the bumper. It's always old, old white or white looking people (this is New Mexico) with the brazilian anti-Obama stickers on the back of their rides. I did see one young woman -- one -- with anti-Obama stickers....... on a farking electric piss green Volkswagon Beetle. Blew my mind. I was like, WTF? oh yeah, and she also had an environmental sticker.

I think she was trolling. If you live out here, maybe you've seen her.

But yeah, I know in 5 seconds whether or not its okay to talk politics with an older person. The super christians really hate him. But again, Romney's a Mormon who's political actions have all been firmly in RINO territory before he got the unofficial nomination this year. I have way more respect for folks who are going to vote third party, than who go through mental gymnastics to convince themselves its okay to vote for some dude they'd normally spit on for his track record just to get Obama out of office.

Gyrfalcon: Some Bass Playing Guy: I'm beginning to wonder if these alleged "gaffes" are really just carefully scripted to pander to the far right.

Nobody is that good. He demonstrates again and again his complete inability to just say something positive about ANYTHING. Offered a cookie: "Heh heh those look like 7-11 cookies!"

I heard about that. When receiving a gift, you say 'thank you'. Maybe ask who donated them, and then publically praise them for doing so. Calling something 7-11 cookies? He just dissed a major corporation and the bakery which tried to curry his favor by donating them.

Dude has no diplomacy skills. That was an easy one and he actually said that. i don't know what's wrong with him. Even assholes can have charisma, or will know how to diss but make it sound like a compliment. Romney, I just don't know. Dude doesn't have a filter. That's fine for home, but not for a President. Dude is just lucky he's got the 50s white sideburns action going, because if he looked like anything else except a dude from the 50s he wouldn't have made it even this far.

The Jami Turman Fan Club: That would be General Snu Snu.

/His mind is willing but his flesh is spongy and bruised.

Welcome to your lovely shade of green!

(Yeah, not much original material, but a great catch and it made me LOL. The way things are going around here these days? Good enough.)
