I'm an Orioles fan, still in disbelief on how well they're doing. Here's hoping they don't do anything incredibly stupid.

/I'm not confident.

The Braves dealt Vizcaino and a middling minor leaguer for Maholm and Reed. Not a blockbuster, but a good trade, and much better overall than had they gotten Dempster as a rental for Delgado.

Sometime today, we might see a non NL West team made a deal...but probably not.

thecpt: Jays...What are you doing, Jays?

Yeah, trading a decent position player for a reliever is usually a bad call...and they did it twice in the span of an hour.

According to the latest from ESPN, it looks like the Red Sox have backed off on trying to trade Beckett, but may be willing to let go of Salty. If that's the case, they better get a hell of a deal for him.

Two years in a row and, and the Pirates aren't sellers at the deadline....

Please reset your doomsday clocks appropriately folks

Unless that shellacking they got from the Cubs last night is the long-awaited implosion for the season

I wouldn't hold my breath on that, since Salty isn't exactly Mike Piazza.

I see no point in NOT moving Beckett. Who cares if you have to pick up maybe half of his remaining salary. Move him and get younger. Stat.

It looks like the phillies will have to play Mayberry at center even though he is still weak defensively.

Meanwhile... Oakland has won July and the Angels landed the top available pitcher, while the Rangers have lost one starter definitively (their best postseason starter, to be exact), have another one likely to join him, and their free-agent signing seems to enjoy inspiring teams to post 9-run innings. Oh, and their offense is below .200 for July w/ RISP and their supposed all-world MVP hasn't been able to hit a basketball if you threw it at him, and got demoted in the lineup.

But hey, at least they traded a pitcher for... a backup catcher? From the CUBS?

That's the thing with Salty. He's no Mike PIazza, but as far as recent Red Sox catchers, he's been doing pretty damn well.

I agree about Beckett. With how hit-or-miss he is, and his age, I think they might do well to unload him now. Not to mention his yearly spring training weight gain every season.

Please find a shortstop, kthxbai. Or, failing that, a catcher. Also kthxbai.

I'm worried that the Sox think that Shoppach's limited success against righties this year completely outweighs his career futility against them.

Yep! Just checked again. They're +14 right now, 58 wins. So 23 wins left for an even season, 24 for a winning.

They're not going anywhere this season anyway, this is a salary dump.

A homer-prone middle reliever and an AA pitcher who can't throw strikes doesn't seem like the greatest return, but it's better than him walking at the end of the season for nothing I guess.

Considering how well they've played, call it a blip instead of a trend.

Of course, we remember what happened after they fell to the Braves last season in an extra inning game.

The Astros have one potential person left to be traded. Jed Lowrie at SS. He is the most expensive player left on Houston's roster at $1.15 M. That is some serious house cleaning.

With the Mets getting ahead of themselves and going on their epic September collapse in July, I was kinda hoping they'd ditch a few players ... but they only veterans anyone would want are Wright, Santana, and Dickey.

Can't wait for the Rangers to get 14+ wins from the Astros next year.

Texas traded for Geovany Soto last night for a marginal AA pitcher.

They still have Francisco Cordero at $4.5MM on the roster.

If Blanton doesn't go today, he'll be one of the first out on the waivers. I'd be surprised if he was still here come Monday.

This sucks. Victorino was my favorite Phillie. Pence was a little too fresh on the team for me to really care that he's leaving. Why do we need more pitching? We need better bats. Oh well, I guess I'll trust in Ruben. :(

/TIL about the Rule 5 draft.

Yeah, who wants a catcher with a .407 OBP? Those guys suck.

Lol at you trying to pretend that a guy who has never had an OBP above .311 and who is currently sporting a .209 batting average and .360 slugging percentage is a good hitter because of an 86 at-bat sample this season.

Keep farking that chicken if you wish. I'm not debating this.

Walk rate stabilizes around 120 PA (which is a far more important number than AB), but, fine. You don't think he's actually improved, which is fair.

But expecting them to trade for ANOTHER catcher seems a bit off.

Nationals been linked with anyone? Or are they working on the if it ain't broke don't fix it philosophy?

In related Phillies news, Dom Brown will now have 2 full months of actual, real, consistent playing time to prove he can be a big leaguer. That is, unless Charlie decides to bury him on the bench and play an outfield of Pierre (assuming he doesn't go too), Mayberry, and Nix (once he's off the DL) every day.

Can someone enlighten me on why the A's would be interested in a declining 33 year old SS with two years remaining on his deal?

Pence is apparently going to the Giants for Tommy Joseph, Nate Schierholtz and "a pitcher", but there's a holdup involving a physical.
