Yes, bring on the serial liar and national security failure, Condi Rice. That's the way to go. Let's remind everyone about Bush's abject failures!

Small business owners or unlicensed plumbers? Republicans have trouble telling the difference.

None of them "want" the job. That doesn't mean they won't take it.

The war criminal part won't be a problem for the Republican base. The rest, she can totally change.

Romney might be able to persuade her if he promised to resign immediately after being inaugurated. Otherwise... probably not.

To be fair, except for the Black part the truth of all of those varies with your political alignment, i.e. none of them are actually true (well, maybe the pro-choice, iirc she's just hedged on that one a lot unless there was a recent change).

But yeah, in general that pretty much sums up the reason why the idea of associating the campaign with the Bush administration is so truly, depressingly, pathetically desperate. There's a lot of residual hate there from both ends of the political spectrum, not to mention the center.

I don't know if this is fair--she is a smart lady. As a liberal, she's at least a conservative who I'm not terrified of running the country.

The poll doesn't filter for party affiliation, so this is basically the choice for Independents and Democrats. Not terribly surprising.

I just don't get the point of this poll. Unless my "small business" is the subcontract spin-off of a larger contractor working with the DOD, I'd have no interest in Condeleeza Rice.

/Happens a lot, actually, small businesses being subsidiaries of larger companies to meet contractual req's made by a gov't agency.

Well look at the competition.

Bobby Jindal is the guy who thought building sandcastles would keep oil off his state's beaches and ended up sinking the bulldozers instead.
Bob McDonnell was one of those guys pushing for transvaginal ultrasounds as a requirement to get an abortion.
Pawlenty is such a good campaigner that he racked up a half million dollars worth of debt before dropping out after the very first poll. His selling point is that he's as interesting as diet, fat free mayonaise - which is better than the other two guys the articles mention: Natalie Portman's brother and some other guy who I've never heard of.

Sure, Condi's damaged goods, but she'd be better than the rest - which is exactly the reasoning that won Mitt the primary.

It's for that reason Romney won't pick her. You think he's going to choose anyone that has the slightest chance of out shining him on anything? No way. Add to that I don't see Rice (for all her faults) taking a purely honorary VP position where she sits in Number One Observatory Circle waiting out her 4-8 years with absolutely no say whatsoever in policy making.

That fact there's vocal support for her candidacy probably also poisons the well for her. Romney thinks he can win this all on his own, and if his advisors think otherwise they aren't saying or he isn't listening.

2012-07-31 03:07:50 PM

Given the severe lack of quality of the VP candidates many Republicans appear to have a created a fantasy of Condi that is some combination of a Fairy Godmother, Vestal Virgin, and Magic Negro that they feel would also have enormous appeal even to female and liberal voters. Given that she wold never actually be picked as the VP candidate they are free to elaborate their fantasies while ignoring any of her aspects that would doom her as a VP candidate.

Condi is the distraction that gets trotted out whenever the Romney campaign needs a distraction.

Claiming to support this not-ever-possible-candidate does not demonstrate that the supporter is free from bigotry against women, blacks, and gays, because we are talking about a fantasy situation.

Magic Negro:

The Magical Negro ... or magical black friend, is a supporting stock character in American cinema who is portrayed coming to the aid of a film's white protagonists.[1] These characters, who often possess special insight or mystical powers, have been a long tradition in American fiction.

simply appears one day to help the white protagonist.[7][8] He usually has some sort of magical power, "rather vaguely defined but not the sort of thing one typically encounters."[7] He is patient and wise, often dispensing various words of wisdom, and is "closer to the earth."[4]

The Magical Negro serves as a plot device to help the protagonist get out of trouble, typically through helping the white character recognize his own faults and overcome them.[4] Although he has magical powers, his "magic is ostensibly directed toward helping and enlightening a white male character."[6] "These powers are used to save and transform disheveled, uncultured, lost, or broken whites (almost exclusively white men) into competent, successful, and content people within the context of the American myth of redemption and salvation."[9] It is this feature of the Magical Negro that some people find most troubling. Although from a certain perspective the character may seem to be showing blacks in a positive light, he is still ultimately subordinate to whites. He is also regarded as an exception, allowing white America to "like individual black people but not black culture."
I don't know how many Condi supporters really look to her as someone to spiritually enlighten them as opposed to just a token who will know her place.

Despite her claims otherwise, Condi is the best bet for VP this time. Several other names mentioned want to make a legitimate run themselves in the next cycle, while others (Jindal, Christie, Rubio) pretend that they can. Condi doesn't have a hope in hell of running for president, so this won't adversely affect her career.

BTW, just what has she been doing for the lat 3 1/2 years anyhow?

Because nobody understands the plight of small business owners like a lady who's spent her entire life working in academia, corporate public policy, the federal government, or foreign policy think tanks!

She doesn't really bring much to the ticket, but she is clearly the right person to coordinate our response to the growing Soviet threat.

Wait... she's already had a chance to run the country (in part) and failed miserably (9/11 and Iraq). Now you want to give her another chance?

I may not agree with most of her politics, she's always struck me as an interesting person. Once I dreamed I worked as her assistant and it was the most satisfying professional experience I've never had. Plus, I want to see those boots again. I want to see those boots kicking ass in the Oval Office, if only her politics were more palatable.

She's o.k. in my opinion. Thing is, the question of the Bush administration's effects on the economy and world are gonna come up and the GOP will have to pull that back out of the closet.

I keep on hearing this, yet I have seen no evidence to support this assertion. The last time I asked this question the only answer I got was that she wrote papers on eastern European politics under the Soviet Union, however all her interactions and policies even in her supposed area of expertise were failures. If you can't adjust for the fact that things changed in preceding decades you're really not that smart.
