Guess he was just standing his ground, amirite?

Oh and, serious question from TFA:

One of them pulled out a gun and wound up shooting himself on accident.

Isn't it "by accident"? My daughter says "on accident" and we thought it was just a local slang thing.

I sure as hell wouldn't mess with a guy willing to shoot himself to make a point.

That would be the best fark you way to win a fight. Just shoot yourself. No one is going to mess with you.

But you can, and you can be guaran-damn-teed sure it will fire when you pull that trigger. Every time. No matter where it's pointed.

Got to love Fark and its independent stance. Links about fools with guns and links about gun tragedies abound but not one link (that I submitted anyway) that shows people using guns to stop tragedies ever gets greened.

Nice.

It's not a local thing, it's just child and/or stupid person thing. Kind of like saying "I could care less" or "I seen a dog".

Your daughter will probably outgrow saying "on accident", but you should probably keep an eye on her grades in English, just in case.

2012-07-31 01:28:04 PM
No surprise.

Numerous studies have found that gun owners are far more likely to injure/kill themselves, a family member, or a visitor (whether by accident, suicide attempt, domestic dispute, etc) than they are to use it in self-defense against an attacker.

That why the whole theory of owning a gun "for self-defense" is such a crock of shiat. The statistics say otherwise.

If you want to avoid getting shot, one of the single best things you can do us not own a gun and not keep a gun in your house.

I don't know. My best friend of 30+ years still says 'Already did done it", if you ask him if he's done something or another

I'm pro gun ownership and I fail to see the problem with idiots shooting themselves with their own guns. To steal a line from Dennis Leary, we don't need less guns, we need more guns and give em, to the right farking people.

DC doesn't allow concealed cary or open cary at all, so this person wasn't legally carrying around the gun around in the first place (I assume the article would have mentioned if he was a law enforcement person or someone who is allowed to carry a gun in the district).

This was right near the Verizon center. Its populated heavily by both tourists and, for some reason, local thugs who hang around, look menacing and occasionally fight with one another

Statistics also show natives living in the Amazon won't die from a car wreck. So if you don't want to die from a car wreck don't be near cars. What does the reason for owning a gun have anything to do with the statistic?

It's a popular choice for the baggy-pants crowd.

However, my money is on it being either a .25 or a .32 from one of our fine arms makers, like Raven or Charter.

Proximity to any gun, including your own.

If no gun is near, you are highly unlikely to be shot. Long-range rifles and random stray shots falling from the sky notwithstanding.

However, thanks to selection bias statistics such as this one get skewed by the rather high number of retards out there. It's the same with motorcycles. Responsible, attentive riders rarely get into accidents and when they do, they are usually of a less-severe nature (getting creamed by a drunk or brainless driver can at times be impossible to avoid). Responsible, properly-trained gun owners rarely if ever end up on the wrong side of a bullet.

Nobody conducts studies of responsible people, because it's too hard to find them and too boring to watch them once you do.

/not everybody who lives in a trailer ends up on COPS either

. . . if you study responsible adults, you don't get the kind of sensationalized results that end up on Fox or CNN, whereby you enhance your reputation which helps you get grants from the kind of foundations that seek to ban guns, or motorcycles, or Big Gulps.
