That's not a very lucrative career and I think computers do that now anyways. someone tell this girl to re-think her future plans.

It doesn't make tons to start with but you can make a lot in technical and legal areas. I worked with a deaf guy at a (very large) tech company. He and other deaf folks at the company had full access to what was basically an on-call interpretation staff. Being able to properly interpret "The SQL stored procedure was using the wrong join" properly (knowing the shorthand signs or context for signs that have technical meaning) is important.

We had a noob interpreter once and he signed exactly that phrase. I know some ASL and worked closely with him so I knew what he had said, but this person blinked and said "The sequel storage process was joined wrong". That was when I realized how valuable the regular interperation staff was. I know they make a pretty decent rate too.

Interpretation can be highly specialized and the people who are really good at it can actually command a decent salary. I expect she'll do fine.

Cheaper? Sure. More reliable? Yeah. Useful? Not in the slightest.

But go ahead and communicate with a team of 10-15 people using pen and paper, or try to participate in group discussions or provide input on a design or test plan. There's a reason sign language exists.

So, yeah. She actually put the car into the trees so no one else could get hurt, rationalizing it would only be her (though that didn't happen).

Also, for all you armchair QBs, sure, she could have just did whatever and slowed the vehicle down (including moving Pop Pop's foot off the accelerator) instead of parking it into some trees. Hell, she could have sat on his rigor lap and drove home, or to a party, or wherever she wanted. She was in a panic situation and never had to drive besides a go kart. I think she did fine under the circumstances.
